It's strange. I love action, fast-paced shit, overwhelming weirdness, tragedy, and high stakes in my manga but Frieren is such a beautiful and interesting read that I genuinely can't find that feeling in anything else I've read. It literally mimics exactly what it feels like to be nostalgic.

@@mckenziekate Frieren is a cut above most mainstream manga. You've got good taste. You might want to check out Ancient Magus Bride for a good emotionally evocative fantasy that isn't to trope heavy and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō if you are looking for another award-winning fantasy manga with that same bittersweet mono-no-aware vibe that Frieren has. Mushishi is quite beautiful if you are into heartfelt Shinto fantasy stories.

If you like shonen you'll LOVE one piece. The first few books might give the impression that it's a very silly and simple story. However the more you progress in the story the more you realize how detailed the story is with an amazing world building. I've truly never read anything like it. 1: Shadows house is about these nobles who are made of shadows and have no faces, so they use “living dolls” to act as there faces. It’s very mysterious and it makes you wonder “what exactly is shadows house?”
2: Toilet bound Hanako-kun is about a schoolgirl who summons one of her schools 7 mysteries the ghost Hanako and asks him to grant her wish but she ends up helping Hanako stop the other 6 mysteries from running rampant around the school.
3: The Promised Neverland is about these kids who live in an orphanage and have a loving caretaker they call mom, everything is perfect. But one they 2 of the kids discover a secret, the “orphanage” is a farm and they are the the food. And so the kids make a plan to escape this so called paradise.

I love how people are getting into more anime and manga these days. If you didn't know some mangas are adapted from the original being the light novel versions.
I'd like to recommend a few if you were interested.
    1. Hunter x Hunter: My favorite series known for its hiatus, but also it's unpredictable and it's definitely a don't judge a book by its cover. It also helped inspire some other manga today.
    2. To Your Eternity: honestly, did this one almost recently and it became my 2 favorite series. It's such a heartwarming series, and since you're doing first volume only, this one, in my opinion, is the best first-started volume that hooks you in.
    3. Solo Leveling: This series is called a manhwa, the term called in Korea instead of manga, and you also read it the same way as a comic book btw. It's the number 1 most popular manhwa full of hype, action, and fun the more you read. It's also a common trope in the manga and manhwa books industry, but this series is well known for doing it so well, and plus its art is amazing. There's also a light novel version if you were interested in reading that version instead. It's also one of the only Manhwa to be in the book stores in the manga section sadly, and it was my first Manhwa so hope you get into those too, even if you can only read them online.
I would love to suggest more, especially, some in different genres and whatever is the most popular and hyped now, but I didn't want to overwhelm you.

@@mckenziekate It's a bit hard for me to think of many since it seems you lean more toward action and I'm more into character driven series, but perhaps Yona of the Dawn? It's a high fantasy shojo series that I think could have pretty wide appeal.
My first ever manga was Inuyasha back when I was 12 which I still think is a pretty good starter series, outside of scifi it has elements of pretty much every genre ever and it was super fun. It has the same targeted demographic as series like Spy x Family (... and technically One Piece too but I extremely don't care for One Piece at all in all honesty 🙈) so that one could be a good one to try. They have it in omnibuses nowadays which makes it a bit easier to collect.
Probably your best bet though is to go by your favorite books and movies and see which manga are along the same lines (there'll definitely be something that fits, the variety in manga is enormous even if not every series is super well known) and try those out.

I was super into books when I was a kid, but have had trouble getting back into it until I started reading manga. I will gladly give recommendations as a manga lover/collector:
-Noragami (about gods and their interaction with a special human. I feel like this is good for those into shounen. Subtle comedy, Action, fiction)
-Yona of the Dawn (a princess learns to be independent while seeking the help of the legendary 4 dragons in their help to rebuild her kingdom. Romance, historical fiction)
-Dandadan (just read the first chapter lol, you mentioned you like the shounen genre so I think this is worth a try with the first volume being published next month! Comedy, sci-fi, subtle romance)
-Oshi no Ko (a fan of an idol is reincarnated as the idol's baby... not really sure what else to describe about this one but I think it gives a good idea about idol's lives while adding some dark elements, make sure to read at least until chapter 10. Only available online at the moment. Mystery)
-Love is war (a genius rich girl falls in love with a genius boy and the two come up with over drawn out plans to make the other confess. I recommend reading this one after having read some other romance mangas because it makes fun of them in a way and makes it even more funny. Also watch it if you get a chance!. Romance, comedy)
-to your eternity (an immortal learns the joys and pains of living, the best way I can describe it, very sad but also beautiful. Sci-fi, emotional)
-promised neverland (try to go in blind for this one, the first chapter gives you most of what you need to know. Mystery, thriller)
-Nana (2 girls named Nana become roommates, and it follows their lives trying to survive in Tokyo. It gives a harsh reality to romance as an adult and it better suited for women, not a younger audience. Also amazing fashion. I can understand if this one could be put off after reading a lot of shoujo based on high school, so it's a nice breather from that genre. romance, coming of age)
if you need a place to read manga digitally, VIZ media has an app where you can pay $2 a month for a ton of titles, especially shounen. I gave some recommendations for someone new to manga, and I am still not sure what your taste is but hope the descriptions can help you determine if you wanna pick it up or not. I hope these help and I am looking forward to your manga journey, i am now subbed and along for the ride :)

30:30 Berserk is a dark fantasy manga. Set in a medieval Europe-inspired during the Dark Age
Now The manga is good (for me) BUT Trigger Warning, It features graphic examples of very violence and sexual assault/rape
It's expensive manga (both for the deluxe editions and the regular ones)
The deluxe editions contain 3 regular size volumes and have much bigger size than the regular ones
So if you're interested i think you should borrow the manga from your friends or your library first and try read the first 5 deluxe volumes or 14 regular volumes instead buying them
Or maybe you could rent them (if that possible)
Or buy them in digital format
    Good luck 👍

I’m little hesitant to even recommend it to a new manga reader, but berserk has some of if not the best character writing I’ve ever seen, but fair warning for the first half of the series sexual assault is pretty rampant. And yeah it’s realistic in that setting, but it still can definitely feel very gratuitous. Thankfully it basically disappears in the latter half. I heard that miura the author didn’t want to draw stuff like that anymore, but don’t take my word on that. Also the first 3 volumes (or first deluxe volume) are pretty edgy and kinda dull compared to the rest of the series.
It’s personally my favorite series, but yeah I would never condone someone deciding it’s not their thing.
Also for something a bit lighter in tone maybe fullmetal alchemist. For being 27 volumes the story feels amazingly compact and well planned out, with great pacing. It also rectifies something that while not true 100% across the board, is definitely a common problem. Shonen isn’t known for having the best writing when it comes to female characters, but the author Hiromu Arakawa being a woman not only pulls that off, but writes every one of her characters pretty well.

I didn’t realize the author of full metal alchemist was a female. Idk why, but I wasn’t expecting that.. that makes me even more intrigued to pick it up. I can see the world and the characters building into something amazing, but again, the horror elements made me nervous haha 🐓

Oh wow, I see many titles on here, that I would've NEVER recommended a first-time manga reader and there are some very underrated manga series here. It's great and brave of you to dip into a wide variety of genres!
    1. One Piece is my favorite manga, but I don't think it's a great first manga choice (which I know is weird because many people have grown up with its anime) because it's very shounen and absurdist. But once you get used to it and its artstyle, it's a great adventure!
    2. I really love "the Apothecary Dairies" and I think it's underrated, but it can get very episodal and confusing imo.
    3. Sailor Moon is my childhood, but I think the manga artstyle doesn't really hold up. And it's very cliché sometimes, which I really liked as a child.
    4. Spy x Family is so good! The manga and anime are both so lovely. It's great for beginners.
    5. I haven't read Monster because I'm not a fan of its genres, but I've only heard great things of this manga.
    6. Fruits Basket has a lovely story, but I haven't really connected to the characters, too. I'd only recommend this to people, who wants to read something melancholic/ slice of life.
    7. The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese is very toxic and I'm so surprised that it's even here. I'd NEVER recommend this to unknowing readers and especially not to first-time readers of manga. You only read this to not like the characters, but to see how toxic some people can get.
    8. I haven't read Frieren yet, but it's on my list, and I know reading this will be good.
I'm curious how you'll like these manga!

And yes, the cornered mouse was TOXIC and I did not love it haha and I have been trying to get my hands on the third volume of spy family but it doesn’t seem to be available until the end of September for some reason..?? (Must be back ordered) ... and haha I just kind of picked up a bunch of random stuff that I thought could be potentially interesting, I honestly had no idea where to start really. I am really excited to get to one piece but since making this video I have heard/seen a lot of people say it’s not a great place to start (oops) I would love to know what you would recommend to a manga beginner! I am going to make another manga Vlog reading what you guys recommend so I would love some of your wisdom/guidance!!

      @xina9032 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@mckenziekate Thanks for answering and I'm sorry for my late reply.
I don't really know what ypu actually like or look for in stories in general, so I'll recommend some manga and try to describe why I'd recommend them. Feel free to read them! And I apologize in advance because of the text walls...
But before I recommend some manga, I'd like to explain what some genres are (these are actually target audience and not genres, but we call them genres):
*Shounen* (target audience: boys between 12 - 18 years old) This is the most popular genre. The typical shounen manga are about a male main character, who wants to achieve something. Shounen are pure hype and often action manga since external struggles are in the foreforcus. Each and every shounen manga have their own story, which make them unique, but there are some things that are similiar. Since shounen manga are for teenage boys, there aren't many manga that stick to tragedies and if they do, often its outcome is still positive somehow. Shounen tropes are e.g. "power of friendship is undefeatable regardless of how invincible the villain is", "rage and grief unlocks new powers", "objectifying girls/ women (and sometimes boys and men) is totally okay", "sometimes comedy is inappropriately used to elevate a sad or even tragic scene", "Injuries are healed very fast through determination or some ridiculous reasons", "hitting and slapping your friends for comedic scenes is ok", "main character eats a lot, spends a lot of money, drinks a lot or has some sort of over average weird character trait" etc.
Despite my issues with shounen, it's still a very entertaining manga genre, as long as you don't dwell too long into these tropes.
*Shoujo* (target audience: girls between 12 - 18 years old) The main character is usually female. Fruits Basket is a shoujo manga. There are some great shoujos, but if you dislike romance, you'll be shocked to know that most of the shoujos contain some degrees of romance. Shoujo manga typically talk about internal struggles and seldom about external ones. Tbh, reading newly created great shoujo manga is getting rarer nowadays. Shoujo tropes are "it's an emotional or romantic moment when there are dozens of flowers on the page", "the main character fixes people and their problems", "especially in a school life and modern setting, there's often a stage of cooking/ baking for your crush, and getting love rivals", "blushing every single time", "main character and the crush often end up together and live happily ever after" etc.
Even though some scenarios or characters are weird or one-noted, it's a great genre to just romantize and shut off your brain sometimes.
There are many more genres/ target audience, but imo these genres/ target audience are the most often recognized.

      @@mckenziekate
"Arte" by Kei Ohkubo (genre: historical, slice of life drama) is about a young girl, who tries to be a painter in a medieval and patriarchal society. I think, this manga is a great slow start into a western historical genre because it's easy to digest and the main character is a hard-working girl, who could have a slight hint of "I'm not like the other girls", but she grows ever so slightly. Not to spoil anything, but there was a moment, when her good-intentioned but one-way view of love and work was challenged and she learnt to accept differences.
"welcome to demon school iruma-kun" by Osamu Nishi (genre: shounen, fantasy, comedy, drama) is about an abandoned boy, who gets adopted by a demon. He then goes to a demon high school and tries to keep his human identity a secret. This manga is surprisingly light-hearted and wholesome! Even though the main character appears flat sometimes, the side-characters and their antics are so entertaining. If you want to read an overarching plot, this manga might underwhelm you because the arcs are stand-alone-ish. This manga has little to no fanservice, which is great imo.
“World of Leadale” written by Ceez and drawn by Tenmaso (genre: isekai, fantasy, adventure) is about a woman who wakes up as her game character. The genre isekai basically means that a person (or a group of people) is transported into another world/ dimension. This manga is a slow and easy entry to isekai manga.
“Saihate no paladin” written by Kanata Yanagino and drawn by Kususaga Rin (genre: isekai, shounen-ish, fantasy) is about a reincarnated boy who lives with three fantasy creatures. This manga has many isekai tropes, but in a new light e.g. “Religious groups and or nobles/ royalties may or may not be evil”, “overpowered main characters” etc. I nearly teared up reading this, so this one sticks to its tragic moments.
"Last Game" by Shinobu Amano (genre: shoujo, romance, comedy) is about a pair of childhood rivals. Unlike other shoujo manga, I'd say that the boy is the main character! He tries to be no. 1 at everything, but a new girl destroys him in every aspect. This manga started out as a one-volume-manga, but because of its popularity, it has gotten a serialisation. This manga is so funny to me and cute.
"Orange" by Ichigo Takano (genre: shoujo, drama) is about a group of friends, who befriend the new guy. The main character develops a crush on him. Suddenly she receives letters written by her future self? It's an emotional manga about friendship and mental health. Trigger warning: mentions of su!c!de in this manga! It's not as shoujo-esque as others, but the story is melachonic and beautifully drawn and protrayed.
“One Piece” by Eiichiro Oda (genre: shounen, action, adventure, drama, comedy, fantasy) is about an air-headed teenage boy who wants to become pirate king. This manga is NOT a great start into shounen because some of the plot threads are easily understood and accepted by shounen readers, but first-timers are often very confused by the genre’s logic, BUT it’s a great first start for a grand adventure and world-building manga. Sometimes characters are one-noted, but many of them have multiple dimensions to them. If you can get over the first arcs (personally, I liked those arcs), it’s a great read. This definitely has an overarching story. Although the progress is very slow sometimes, it’s there. This manga is absurd, has ridiculous good and bad humor (fanservice in the later parts isn’t great), but I love it. Keep in mind, this manga is slightly difficult for first-time shounen readers and it has over 1000 manga chapters and still on-going. If you don’t like this manga by the end of its first saga (until chapter 100), drop it.
