    The clouds prepare for battle
In the dark and brooding silence
    Bruised and sullen storm clouds
Have the light of day obscured
    Looming low and ominous
    In twilight premature
    Thunder heads are rumbling
    In a distant overture...
All at once, the clouds are parted
Light streams down in bright unbroken beams...
Follow men's eyes as they look to the skies
The shifting shafts of shining weave the fabric of their dreams...

Rush doesn't write songs, they write scores. The music is so much more than notes and sound,...its animated, its always moving and bringing you... its alive and telling a story.

When I see them play live it instantly raises the hair on my arms. They were one of the best if not the best band that ever hit the face of this earth! Closest to perfection. They were masters of the art of music.

A lot of people hate Geddy Lees voice but if they would listen to Xanadu and really, all of their music they would see that his voice is pretty damn amazing.

Marc Sorensen Great comment, Marc. And as much as I love Geddy, he even annoys ME a bit when he’s having an off day in concert. But he has done some great vocal performances in studio, Xanadu being one of them.

I have been a Rush fan since my first year of high school (that's age 13-14 for our international friends...I'm in the U.S. [near New Orleans, Louisiana]). As a young drummer I just fell in love with them immediately. That time frame was about 2 years before their album "Roll the Bones" which came out in 1991, and I've been an avid fan and follower since (shit...I'm really getting old now). I have every album (except for a few of the more-recently released live collections). Rush has been one of those bands (of which there are very few) that you can ALWAYS depend on to bring you great new music, never-getting-old unforgettable masterpieces, all of which are played perfectly every time during their live shows to crowds made up of 2 and 3 (and perhaps even 4) generations of fans experiencing them together. At every show you will see kids under the age of 10 attending alongside their 35 year old fathers, and their 65 year old grandfathers, and EVERYONE is excited, happy and full of energy which is such a wonderful thing to behold. I have seen Rush play live 6 times (in 3 different cities) and I'm eternally sad that I will most likely never get to see them for a 7th or 8th time. I would see them 15 more times if I could. Rush is just so unique and special.
Ruben, I know this is an old video, but I just came across your channel today and I just wanted to say that I've enjoyed your videos thus far. You got yourself a new subscriber, and I look forward to seeing more of your progressive rock/metal reactions. Not just for your Rush reactions, but I'm interested in anything else you may throw at us. I'm hoping to get introduced to some great music I have never heard before too.
Much peace & love, brother...God bless!

We followed them across the US & Canada for the last 3 tours. We did 8 shows in the 2010 & 2011 TM tour, 9 shows on the 2012 & 2013 Clockwork Angels tour & 12 shows on the 2015 R40 tour. They will forever be the ONLY band I listen to. Thanks for your awesome videos. Welcome to the “Rush family”. 😃😃

I got introduced to Permanent Waves back in 1984. While visiting friends of my parents in Miami, Florida, I used to hang out with their youngest son. In his car (which he called The Beast) he had a tape deck which only worked when sticking a chop stick into it. The tape that was playing 24/7 was Permanent Waves. It became the soundtrack of this happy summer. I had never heard of this band before but the moment I got back home to Germany I bought the album. I'm a Rush fan ever since. Lucky me was able to see them live one time.

Bliss face. Ya get that when Rush is played. I was fortunate. The 1st concert I ever went to was Rush on the Moving Pictures tour in '81. Yes you do have a lot to catch up on. Of all things, Neil Peart's drum solo, from "Exit, stage left". That solo was to drummers, what Van Halen's "Eruption" was to guitarists. It changed everything. Many can emulate, few can create, break ground and inspire. There's not a single professional drummer on the planet who does not know or tried to play Neil's YYZ. Without a doubt, Neil inspired millions with his formidable prowess. He was also their lyricist, for the bulk of their material.

In English, a Jacob's ladder is a phenomenon where the sunlight breaks through the clouds and send shafts of light down. The term comes from the story in Genesis where Jacob dreams of a ladder that stretches down from heaven, which angels climb up and down. You hear a lot of ascending and descending notes that evoke that, asking with the final "break through" part of the song. The Wikipedia article on the story is pretty interesting.

Man, I was at that show. Upper tier seats, but their sound thunders throughout the hotel's entertainment venue anyway, so... Saw the live 6 times. I remember being at one show, outdoor venue in Arizona, USA, when I was relieving myself of some of the beer I had imbibed in at the "trough" when I heard "Red Barchetta" starting. Man, I was so excited, I put it away before I was finished and ran back as close to the stage as I could get and ROCKED OUT! Man, that was epic. Xanadu is also a fantastic song to experience live. To bad you never had the chance to see them.

I always loved the part following the bridge, where Alex is playing that repeating scale and Neil and Geddy come in bits at a time. I remember playing this song in a band I was in at the time Permanent Waves came out, I don’t think we ever played it live, but used to like doing more obscure Rush tunes at practice.
I just remember how difficult it was to stay focused on that guitar scale when those drum were playing that really weird syncopated drum beat when it first comes in. It was a lot easier playing it with the record where you had Alex to follow along with, but without him, it was a lot harder to not get out of time. It kept sounding like our drummer was making a mistake, but he wasn’t. That’s what Peart was playing. A really crazy beat. I really loved Lifeson’s piece there. The time signature was really odd.

I still say by tor and the snowdog live on all the worlds a stage !!!! Catches the trio at their peak in their early stages and they take a very heavy yet epic song and add to it and play even better on this live version. This will rock your brains out yet take you on a trip in your head. imagine a led zeppelin on heavy metal steroids is how I describe it.

Great job as always. Again, just for the fun of it, I'd love to see you do a Fan Reaction to O'Basteria. That's one of Neil Peart's drum solos. Thanks again for a terrific 80s Rush song. Love Jacob's Ladder. I'm so glad you're going with their live concerts. While the studio albums are awesome, their live performances were always amazing - Great live band. This was from their final tour, where they played their songs in reverse order, and if you watch the concert video, stage hands are constantly changing their stage set. So at the beginning of the concert they're playing songs from the Clockworks Angels tour, using that set, but by the end of the concert, they're playing songs from their 1974 "Rush" album, and the set looks like a high school gymnasium! BTW, look closely at Geddy's "Ampeg" amps - The logo is "Dirk," which is Geddy's nickname.

Well this crowd did NOT live up to Rio! Loved the song though, thanks for sharing it with us Ruben.

Permanent Waves was my first Rush album, and remains my favourite.

Thanks Ruben, my favorite band. Hard to choose a best song. I don't. Always go for the popular ones. Natural science or between the wheels for me. But there are so many favorites.

The amazing power trio of Rush ! It's heavy yet atmospheric at the same time. It's technical and has many interesting changes to keep from being repetitive yet it has a seamless consistent straight line through it. Even in the parts where it "sounds" repetitive there are subtle changes. Anyone who doesn't at least give Rush a nod regardless of taste in music is either stupid and it goes over their heads or they are bias ass holes. They never needed a top 40 hit or big mtv video and they never needed trendy outfits, big hair, or make up. And they never sold out and made songs with such cheesy worn out clichés ie getting drunk & high, tearing up hotel rooms, fighting, or banging under age groupies to some simplistic repetitive chorus, beat, and rhythm that's been done a million times. Still they sold over 20 multi platinum albums making them one of the top 3-4 most selling rock bands ever, got into the rrhof, and this Canadian working middle class non commercial band even got a star on Hollywood blvd. Again, regardless of taste and whether you like the band or not if you know anything about this band and still don't give them a nod you're either tone deaf or a bias asshole.

I saw this 3 times on the last tour. It provoked such a great atmosphere and was quite an experience to see, hear, and feel them performing it. Check out Far Cry live. It's one of their "newer" songs (if an 11 year old song could be considered new), and it just makes you feel like you can survive anything.

Keep checking out their concert videos, from "All the World's a Stage" through "R-40." BTW, for a great list of their most popular songs, just check out the set list for R-40, which plays songs from every album from Clockworks Angels back to Rush.

      *Almost every album.
They sadly skipped over Test For Echo, Presto, Hold Your Fire, and Power Windows. Although that might just be because they played a lot of songs from those albums during the Clockwork Angels Tour and the Time Machine Tour

I look forward to your next Rush review! A newer suggestion would be: Seven Cities of Gold, Headlong Flight, or Caravan! Oldies: The Enemy Within, Trees, or A Passage to Bangkok. Random favourites: Dreamline, Far Cry, or Animate... I used to sing these to my daughters, but they may not be as cool in this format: The Pass, Closer to The Heart. So many more! 150 or so in total - lol... Enjoy!!

The word "passionate" and the words "Rush fan" are inextricably linked. The studio versions of these songs are more true to their intended intent though, I think. Natural Science would be a good next choice. So many songs to choose from ... one really good early one would be the Necromancer from the album Caress of Steel.

I recommend hearing this song as STUDIO version from the album Permanent Waves. Especially the section with the changin rhythms and speeds. I think you can hear the difficult!!! changes much better there. Give it a try!

There are so many good Rush songs, it is tough to narrow it down. I personally think that Bravado, The Pass, Animate, Subdivisions, Freewill and 2112 are some of my favorites, but there are many many more. I am excited to go on this journey with you!

You will notice with Rush, after a while, that the drums parts are constructed like a song in itself. I can put on Rush album and just listen to the drums alone.
