I agree wholeheartedly, this is the perfect song to end a storied career. I have watched the "Time Stand Still" documentary many times and it ends with this song and everyone crying including myself. The thought of never seeing these guys play again is hard to fathom, but very understandable that Neil needs to move on. All I can say is THANK YOU Neil, Geddy and Alex and all those in the background who made this band what it is, the best.
Much of their performance was in the 70s, they played show after show touring constrantly. That Neil could do that is amazing, that they all lasted through that slog is amazing.
Back here 10 months later and a month after Neil's death. Makes me wonder if He knew that his time was limited when he wrote this song. People who have faced mortality in their lives have a more keen sense of life and awareness of it's fleeting nature. Either way, what a gift to leave his adoring fans. Rest in Peace Neil!

I could imagine them getting a really good new drummer and finding a really profound lyricist and recapturing the "Rush sound".

They had other drummers, and Alex and Geddy are quit capable of making great music on their own, and they've indicated that's possible. Time will tell, but I think they'll be back in one form or another. If they do, there will be a tremendous push by the record label for them to call themselves Rush.
You could list off 20 best solos of all time and Alex would rightfully have 15 or 16 of those on the list! No one else has done the variety of tasty licks on numerous songs! This one, however, just blows the mind! And yes, it should have been wayyyyyyyyyyy longer!!!

Is it wrong that I get misty eyed every time I hear this song?! (moreso since my mom passed last year - the words become all the more poignant!) What a statement Mr. Neil Peart made with the lyrics of this song, what emotion to the music (especially Alex's guitar solo - I get chills, every time!), and what an appropriate way to sum up a career! I, like many, miss Rush dearly, but they have earned their rest. Nothing have they still to prove, or more do they owe us. What a masterpiece to go out on. This Clockwork Angels (Title track of the album that this song is from), Caravan, BU2B, Headlong Flight, The Anarchist, Wish Them Well are some great songs off this album. Clockwork Angels is actually one of my favorite Rush albums. What a great album to go out on. RIP Neil (Aka The Professor Behind The Drum Kit). (1952-2020). The Garden is one of my favorite Rush songs and probably my favorite on Clockwork Angels.

I think a LOT of rush fan’s favorite albums are the ones that came out closest to when they discovered them because of how cutting edge their latest albums always felt relative to other popular music at any given time. Yet they also incorporate the trends of the times into their sound as well. For me it was Counterparts which I still feel is their greatest and indeed one of the greatest albums of all time of any band. Criminally underrated. It has such a slick sound. See if you can find a version of alien shore with the lyrics maybe. But omg listen to the bass in that song. How it isn’t considered the greatest bass line of all time blows my mind.
Watching and listening to your reaction to my favorite band (Rush) makes me feel like I am just discovering them for the first time again. The way you describe it is very honest and emotional. The first time I heard this song, I knew that it would be their last. I knew it was there Swan Song. You don’t write something of this caliber and expect to top it. Sadly, I missed this tour, but did get to see R40. This is my favorite song from Clockwork Angels, and one of my favorite solos from Alex. Neil’s drumming accentuates and punctuates the tone of this song perfectly (as always). And Geddy’s voice sounded relaxed, perfect. I grew up on Rush. They used this song to close the documentary "Time Stand Still" where they showed footage of the last song they played live in concert. In the audence were people from all over the world who had seen literally hundreds of Rush concerts. There wasnt a dry eye to be seen as the lights went up for the final time.

You make a good point, Ruben. For those of us who experienced each album as it was released, the music fits into our lives and memories, as Queen did for you. Rush will continue to inspire new musicians, who will come across the music, recognize the technical brilliance and use it to shape their own sound, much as the members of Rush drew inspiration from King Crimson, Yes, Rory Gallagher and the like, but we were there. Albums like Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures etc. were eagerly awaited. The world stopped revolving for release day of each new album. What have they done this time? As we added each new album to the existing discography, we didn't know that the band would last 40+ years. Hell, we didn't know what 40 years felt like (although unfortunately, we do now. Getting old sucks.) We didn't realize, in those days when Rush fandom felt like being part of a small band of diehards, that one day, OUR band would be not just mainstream, but the act that all others would look to, the band that showed how to get it right and kept doing it; the bottomless well of talent. The Garden was a hell of a way to go out after one of the most amazing discographies ever committed to recorded media.
For a nice gentle song, check out Rivendell (yes, THAT Rivendell). Also, one of my favorite songs they do, a song that gets no love, is Lakeside Park. That song talks about good times at a lake in Ontario Canada, and how those good times produces good memories. Something most of us can relate to. I lived for a while in Ontario when I was young (Barrie), and I get where they're coming from. Rush, in my mind, as a band, has next to no equal! Singularly, they are all musical virtuosos, and as a group, they are simply astounding. I was in tears when I first heard this song on their album when it came out. I was in tears when I saw them live for the first (and sadly last) time, playing this song. I was tearing up just now listening to this live version. Such a great song to get you in the feels, and a perfect swan song for a legendary career for a legendary trio.
This song has so many different meanings for me - which I think is what great art is supposed to offer. To finish their career with not just this album, but this song makes me proud to have been there since I was 11. I am now 49. We grew up together. It was the perfect relationship. Retiring when they did with this song is the perfect ribbon on a career that is simply 'class'.

It’s the band you grew up with; the band that inspired you and opened new worlds. The first time in years that I actually listened to this. In addition to being a swansong to Rush, this is also my personal anthem of the passing of a dear friend. It's been 4 and a half years now and I made it through this song somehow. The hours seem to have ticked away.

I think you're point about Rush being the best given the total perspective is correct. Not as many hits as The Beatles, not as much extreme complexity as Dream Theater, not as innovative with musical style as King Crimson or Pink Floyd, and yet if you combine every measure of quality the answer of the greatest group comes up Rush. Another part of that is the most loyal following over more than 45 years in a business that sees popular groups rise and fade over a few months time. This is also their greatest song, I would say, and one of their most important messages, first confronting the realities of the temporary nature of existence, the difficulties of understanding the universe, but then resolving all of that with what does last, and then how a good and meaningful life should be lived.

Of course for me it's Rush, but I also had a very passionate friend who just loved all of Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio. Don't ever lose that passion! Been a Rush fan for over 3 decades and I am ashamed! I didn't know (until watching this video a few moments ago) that Alex could play keyboards as well. These three never cease to amaze me - as you said Ruben - technically - perhaps the greatest band of all time - but of course - it goes waaaay beyond the technical aspect. They are unique in so many ways, truly gifted musicians but with soul and a commitment that is so rare. I have suggested before a very different kind of Rush song - from an Album I think you still haven't reacted to any song from. That album is Signals. I'm lucky to have seen this tour and to have taken my son to see the R40 tour. They're almost like family to me, I've been seeing them since the Signals tour, I miss them so much. But I understand that chapters in life mean that others close while others open.
When you can watch the R30 documentary and the other Rush documentaries and listen to tool, Metallica, nin, dream theater, and others just fucking rave about how Rush WAS their primary motivation to be good.. it's awe inspiring

As we added each new album to the existing discography, we didn't know that the band would last 40+ years. Hell, we didn't know what 40 years felt like (although unfortunately, we do now. Getting old sucks.) We didn't realize, in those days when Rush fandom felt like being part of a small band of diehards, that one day, OUR band would be not just mainstream, but the act that all others would look to, the band that showed how to get it right and kept doing it; the bottomless well of talent. The Garden was a hell of a way to go out after one of the most amazing discographies ever committed to recorded media.

Also, one of my favorite songs they do, a song that gets no love, is Lakeside Park. That song talks about good times at a lake in Ontario Canada, and how those good times produces good memories. Something most of us can relate to. I lived for a while in Ontario when I was young (Barrie), and I get where they're coming from.

Oh...My...God!!! Ruben, your reaction to this song, completely encapsulates my enormous respect for the talent and creativity that is so obviously evident in this video. Rush, in my mind, as a band, has next to no equal! Singularly, they are all musical virtuosos, and as a group, they are simply astounding. I have so much respect, for the respect that you have afforded them! There may well never be another band, as connected, as driven, as talented, and as humble as these three individuals.
I'm truly grateful to you for reviewing this song(and so quickly). It caps an astonishing career and gives a great final message to life as a whole. I can really understand how you feel about Queen. Rush for me has been "that" band. They have been my favorite band for 30+ years. That being said, I love hearing great music from talented musicians. Feel free to send me some Queen songs that I haven't heard, the only ones I know are the songs played on the radio. You have my E-mail I'm the David, who's name you couldn't pronounce. Never say never.....keep watching their live videos because there are very few bands that sound better live compared to the in the studio. Rush is a Canadian legend.

I was in tears when I first heard this song on their album when it came out. I was in tears when I saw them live for the first (and sadly last) time, playing this song. I was tearing up just now listening to this live version.
Such a great song to get you in the feels, and a perfect swan song for a legendary career for a legendary trio.

This song has so many different meanings for me - which I think is what great art is supposed to offer. To finish their career with not just this album, but this song makes me proud to have been there since I was 11. I am now 49. We grew up together. It was the perfect relationship. Retiring when they did with this song is the perfect ribbon on a career that is simply 'class'.

I totally get what you’re saying, Ruben. If you’ve seen my previous comments, you may know that Rush is my favorite band of all time, and it’s for the same reasons that Queen is your favorite. It’s the band you grew up with; the band that inspired you and opened new worlds. And like you discovering Rush (though late to the party), I discovered Opeth the same way, and I sometimes think •they• may be the greatest band ever. But not my favorite. That will always be Rush. 🤘
The first time in years that I actually listened to this. In addition to being a swansong to Rush, this is also my personal anthem of the passing of a dear friend. It's been 4 and a half years now and I made it through this song somehow. The hours seem to have ticked away.

I think you're point about Rush being the best given the total perspective is correct. Not as many hits as The Beatles, not as much extreme complexity as Dream Theater, not as innovative with musical style as King Crimson or Pink Floyd, and yet if you combine every measure of quality the answer of the greatest group comes up Rush. Another part of that is the most loyal following over more than 45 years in a business that sees popular groups rise and fade over a few months time.
This is also their greatest song, I would say, and one of their most important messages, first confronting the realities of the temporary nature of existence, the difficulties of understanding the universe, but then resolving all of that with what does last, and then how a good and meaningful life should be lived.
Awesome reaction again! I fully can relate to someone having a band that is in their mind & can never change. Of course for me it's Rush, but I also had a very passionate friend who just loved all of Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio. Don't ever lose that passion! Now, if you want to get "blown away" with another tune from this LP, try Carnies! The video is incredible.

Been a Rush fan for over 3 decades and I am ashamed! I didn't know (until watching this video a few moments ago) that Alex could play keyboards as well. These three never cease to amaze me - as you said Ruben - technically - perhaps the greatest band of all time - but of course - it goes waaaay beyond the technical aspect. They are unique in so many ways, truly gifted musicians but with soul and a commitment that is so rare. I have suggested before a very different kind of Rush song - from an Album I think you still haven't reacted to any song from. That album is Signals. First saw them in ‘76 when I was 15, now at 58 they still amaze me. Love Neil as an author you should read his books.
I'm lucky to have seen this tour and to have taken my son to see the R40 tour. They're almost like family to me, I've been seeing them since the Signals tour, I miss them so much. But I understand that chapters in life mean that others close while others open.
I was lucky enough to see them live, every tour from grace under pressure until retirement. Incredible live performances.
When you can watch the R30 documentary and the other Rush documentaries and listen to tool, Metallica, nin, dream theater, and others just fucking rave about how Rush WAS their primary motivation to be good.. it's awe inspiring
