  • Through these past couple years, lo-fi's sound has progressively gotten more popular. One of the bands to implement this the best over the years has been a group going by the name of teen suicide. Changing names to American Pleasure Club a few years ago, they have managed to perfect their sound and impact the underground scene as a whole. Today I want to talk about that.

when i first found teen suicide on spotify, i originally kind of dismissed them as a lame band that was trying too hard to sound edgy. i ended up forgetting about them for a while until i fell into a really depressive state and attempted suicide. while i was in the hospital, i started listening to them again for whatever reason, and payed more attention to what lyrics i could understand. I ended up listening to them every day until i was discharged from the hospital, and i still do today. it helped to know that there are other people who just as fucked up, angry, and hopeless as i was then.

I feel like the “poor mixing” is meant to simulate being unable to express depression vocally, the music being the feelings drowning your ability to tell anyone about it.

I first discovered teen suicide when I was about 14. I was extremely depressed and started listening to all sorts of music. My favourite album is waste yrself. Every single song on this album is able to bring me into this state of nostalgia and melancholy. And it's not even the lyrics that touch me, it't the sound. The instruments and sounds in songs more than often are able to make me feel much more emotional than lyrics, and this band is a prime example of that. Haunt me (x3), We found two dead swans, swimming... all of these songs are so powerful emotionally. Their sound makes me feel empty and sad, but also hazy and dreamy. Such an amazing band.

This band really carried me through the worst parts of my teenage years, and they were a pretty big thing in my circle. While they were awful times, it felt somehow blissful to know that others empathized and could vocalize the feeling in a better way than I ever could. I often feel like this type of music (the garage/indie scene) just feels more authentic and personal than the larger groups; likely because the band (and music itself) are imperfect, and don't have professionally tailored public images. Like yeah, there might be many technical flaws, but if it didn't have those flaws, it wouldn't provide the same emotion. Thank you for making this video, it really was deserved in my eyes.

i need to write a personal narrative essay about this band because nothing has impacted me quite like it. i relate to so many of their songs and knowing that someone feels the way i do, and that someone can understand the way i feel, has practically saved my life. for so long ive been trying to cope with trauma and live with ptsd and for a while i felt like i had no value, like no one would ever know how i felt. i didnt value my life. i found this band and everything from their unique sound to their lyrics embodies me. it's helped me grapple with the fact that people can understand me. they dont tell me i'm not traumatized enough, they dont make failing attempts at trying to guess how i feel, because my brain knows that the songs *know* how i feel. i hope that makes sense. im really young so having something to help me funnel the emotions from being in the psych ward, trying to kill myself, having seizures, frequent anxiety attacks, and being bullied for being trans is so refreshing. i couldn't be more thankful and i wish there was a better way to show my gratitude other than encouraging all of my friends to go to their orlando concert with me.

I remember when my friend/high school ex girlfriend showed me Teen Suicide one day while we were hanging out at her house after school, I thought it was just trashy garage rock. I legitimately asked her how she could enjoy such terribly recorded music you couldn’t understand. It wasn’t until a few years later that I finally gave them a chance. I was in college and going through a near year long bout with my depression. I began to understand the music the more I listened to it. Sam Ray figured out a way to make every insecurity, every bad thought, every pain, every bit of anxiety that I felt and put it into music. It made me feel comfort for the first time in a long time; the fact that someone felt the same as I did, and the fact that they could say it in ways I couldn’t figure out how to do myself. Soon enough, they were my favorite band. Still, to this day, I listen to Skate Witches at least once.
If I ever get the chance to meet Sam Ray, I wanna thank him for giving people feeling like me the comfort we all need with his music.

Awesome video, dude. I cant even begin to get into how much sam has inspired my music. I think i put the first tutorial/interpretation for how to play afterlife dating on youtube back when i was an awkward 17 year old. I have the waste yrself cover tattooed and still make wobbly pop songs with my cassette-tape recorder. These guys changed what music can even be to me.

i love this video so much and i love teen suicide and all of sam rays projects even more (sorry). i’ve been at my lowest this year and teen suicide helped me work thru and feel the emotions i tried to bottle and i just love them for that. they also inspired me to start getting even more into music and making my own; me and my friend group plan on starting a basement band called SKAR once i get my drum set and i blame teen suicide for it

A lot of ts specifically "I will be my own" and "I blew on a dandelion" also a lot of starry cat inspired my recordings. I recorded my first tape "offshore" in my buddy's attic apartment with him playing the guitar and me directly rapping over it. My latest tape "EISENHOWER" has the tape clicks from my childhood tape recorder scattered throughout the whole album. I owe a tooon of inspiration to Sam🙌🏿❤️🥰

There are other names only used for certain shows and unofficial releases: Dumpster, King Salmon: Fish God, Who Cares, and Michael Vick Official Website.

I discovered teen suicide i think when covid happened. I listened to haunt me (x 3) and I thought about it so much long story short in a matter of days i had listened to almost every project sam ray has made. He is a one time thing in all history, you just can't find anything like him and that's what makes it special. You can't feel that way with other music. Also im surprised that the creator of this video still likes comments lol

It does? It makes me depressed as shit lmao. It arrouses feelings of hollowness, over-whelming sadness, and or self-hatred. I usually come to this music when I am tired of trying to manage my life and I want to give up and be a suicidal teen again, before the responsibility and the knowledge that suicide or drugs aren't the answer. Now-a-days I realize that I have to live so I can help other people. And mom would be sad if I died. I recently bought hell on CD because I thought it would be interesting to add to my collection only to realize the allure of being depressed came with it. Now I'm here. I'm starting to kinda understand what you mean by the euphoria, though I would describe it more like an internal warmth. I'm not sure why that is. I'm not sure it matters. All I know is I need to be careful and not become addicted to depression again. That's when people I love get hurt. I'm in a lot of pain right now and I have a hard time telling people about it, and I can't hurt myself because that doesn't work. And what would be the point? I can't control my emotions, past attempts have shown that. I hope nobody reads this. But if someone does so this doesn't come off as hate, I liked this video. It was at 1.3k and I gave it a thumbs up.
