CORRECTION! The helmet Achilles is wearing in the tv show, although not correct specifically for Achilles, is based on a real existing kind of helmet called the Illyrian helmet I wasn't aware of. Matt Easton, from Schola Gladiatoria, corrected me on that so I stand corrected. I still think that the Helmet Achilles wore should have been a closed helmet considering the description of Homer that tells us that Achilles was so well armoured that not much of his body showed. Also we should consider Homer tells us that when he lent his armour to his friend Patroclus, they had the intention of hiding his identity specifically through the helmet. (hence it had to be closed). Still the part where I say that the helmet was completely wrong is wrong. If you want to know more check out Matt's video response to me. Thanks! Only off by about 500 years though. 500 years can't be important to accuracy. For my next movie, Spanish conquistadors in flack jackets and modern riot helmets.
Well, they certainly cannot use authentic mycenaean era armours - those are too ugly. :) Just imagine poor movie director - on left shoulder he has historical advisor and fans: "Make it accurate! Just this time, please!", on right shoulder is shouting producer: "Make it more sexy! More cool! We need to sell it! And don't forget ninja-pirates!" But in some cases I believe they kept historical advisor locked in basement all the time.

I woke up to this when in 1965 the western Cat Ballou casted an Italian as an Indian. Since then, many "caucasians" playing unwhite roles. A little payback is fair enough, plus, when will you stop giving a shit what color people are? Still, in the end, I respect a show that strives to be historically (or scientifically or literally) accurate. Do you?
It would be ridiculous because a Zulu King being black is just as important as him being, well, a king. Having a white man playing him would be farsical, just as much as a movie about Washington starring a black man as the general would be farsical. Achilles, on the other hand is not defined by his ethnicity, skin colour or country of origin at all. It's a completely irrelevant detail that changes nothing about his character and the way he reacts to the events of the story, not to mention how Achilles isn't an historical character so it's not like anyone's is being "disrespect" by casting a black actor. It's not weirder than casting a British woman as Cleopatra or an Australian as William Wallace and yet people didn't complain about these, did they? I mean, the Trojans are supposed to be Turkish people and yet are all played by white people, as are all the Greeks and in fact there isn't a single Greek actor from what I understand so why is Achilles (and Patroclus, but for story reasons if Achilles is black, so must be Patroclus) in particular such a big deal when the rest of the cast is also of the "wrong" ethnicity? It doesn't matter, at all.
I want a documentary about Oda Nobunaga, I think Brad Bitt is the best actor for him. maybe a movie about Mother Teressa, I nominate Will Smith to play her. heck, why not a movie about Dinosaurs, and Jackie Chan can be a Tyrannosaurus ?

As an African, I totally agree with you Metatron. Portraying characters as black just for "diversity" sake is very patronising to Africans. Rather make shows about actual Africans like Zera Yacob, King Abraha, Sundiata, Mansa Musa etc
You know, that's the saddest part about this whole movement - most SJWs are whites themselves and their actions are basically a reflection of "white man's burden", which is actually racist itself - "Oh, you're incapable of taking care of yourselves, so we'll take care of you on your behalf".
As a retired professor, I 100% agree with you. No one is more intolerant than those who think they are defending inclusivity. I love your bold stuff, man!

This is the worst argument that I constantly hear: "he's afictional character, so who cares who plays him". Achiles is as fictional as Mulan, neither have concrete evidence to have existed. Next time Mulan gets a live action remake sHe should be played by Emma Stone.

In my town, there was just a few middle eastern. Now things are really different thanks to refugee crisis, but I'd imagine an African being talk of the whole country back in that era.
This has needed addressing in the historical enthusiast community here on TH-cam for a while now. I've touched on the subject tangentially in a few of my videos but this dedicated debunking you've done was a masterwork and covers the whole issue better than I could have. You did a phenomenal job. Thank you for standing for truth, Metatron. I’ll be sharing this on all the platforms. Also I noticed the inclusion of the most important question of all at 10:39 well done, sir, well done!
Completely agree, a brave thing to do. This video, Shad's comment on The Last Jedi and discussions about female warriors are much needed corrections which may contribute to stabilise society in some way. Because one thing about the pendulum swing is that it tends to swing back at some point. This ultra politically correct posturing which the BBC seems to like so much will create more extreme positions on the other side and thereby probably give rise to real racism.
Darth Guilder because it doesn’t fit the agenda... That’s the point Metatron is making. These producers aren’t interested in fair historical representation of blacks, or even actual levels of social equality. This is a political stance for them, and nothing more. It is the ability to proverbially walk above their political detractors and say “we are progressive, and therefore anyone else is wrong...” It’s discourteous.
What is most worrying is that so many people start to take these as historical fact. Look at the problems the series Roots made to the understanding of the African slave trade and how it really happened.
The last airbender and that movie 21 were asian and or native americans but played by whites. Not im favor of rsce swapping but imo people should have the same energy both ways
As a African American who is a fan of history, I see no need to recast historical characters as black. It disrespects the source material and comes off as unnecessarily pandering. I agree with you, just tell stories of African legends. We black people would like true representation in that fashion. This just shows how out of touch these production companies are.

Blackwashing always particularly annoys me as a redhead because pretty much every single redheaded character is made black in the live actions with almost no exceptions. I don't desperately need representation to validate my sense of self, but it would be really cool to see some more redheads in media. We're already so rare in real life, and we're even rarer on screen with all of this blackwashing. Great video!
Here here, Gingers have been mistreated, exploited, and abused by others around them for many centuries. We were so often erased, depicted as "other," even persecuted as witches for many centuries. Rarity worked against us all the time until more recently when finally we were represented in more mainstream culture by people like actress Lucille Ball, for example. But now, based upon your comments and my own experiences, it looks like we're back to being erased, again, as the rarer Europeans we are, so American blacks can feel "better" about themselves and "included" by randomly inserting or rewriting themselves into history in the most implausible ways for the most obnoxious of rationalizations. Let people, past and present, have their stories about their own cultures and myths. There are so many areas of the world from which to pick historical or mythological content in the ancient craft of storytelling, why do people feel the insane need to lie and rewrite someone else's history to "be represented" in ways and places where it was implausible or where they ignore facts just to fan their own egos?
People still don’t understand the full agenda & the reason for the constant race swapping. The reason all this race swapping is happening in film and television, with both actual historical figures & “fictional” characters as the victims is for one reason & one reason alone. The reason is to promote and normalize the Kalergi Plan of white racial replacement in the minds of the masses. And they will keep doing race swapping & blackwashing even if they lose tons of money & have horrible ratings, because it was never about money or ratings. Cinderella & Beauty & the Beast are ancient European fairytales that likely predate even Christianity & there should be ZERO black people in those live action films. Just like, in a live action Moana film (even though it is not ancient) there should be an entirely Polynesian cast. Just as in a live action Mulan should be an entirely East Asian cast. There is a reason they ONLY race swap and black wash WHITE characters. And again, the reason is about promoting & normalizing the Kalergi Plan agenda. Nothing more, nothing less.

I love this whole blackwashing history thing because it implies that in order to be impressive, black people need to borrow from white people. It implies that only the history of white Europeans is impressive and that black people have no history or culture worthy of sharing. To be “good” you need to be borrowing from someone else. It’s perhaps the most disposable thing that can ever be implied about a culture and it reveals how truly racist places like Hollywood are. They can virtue signal and preach inclusivity all they want, but the reality is staring us in the face: they’re more interested in blackwashing history than in telling and exploring black history.
I would say a lot of that is because the majority of the population is uneducated about history. Your average western TV viewer has only heard of the big names in history and mythology (which are mostly Eurocentric.) A show about the Mali Empire, or the Nubians probably wouldn't be well, because people wouldn't know who they were. Hell, even I'll admit my knowledge of sub-Saharan African history is lacking since it's just not a subject that gets covered often unless you go looking for it.
@@jasepoag8930 The point is that is should be something that is taught. You are mentioning a continuing issue that is promoting western historical ideas and never teaching anything else. Actually, this is not so bad after all. These are fairly light cases. In Finland, people had long dreamed of the movie about Mannerheim, who was the 6th President of Finland during the World War II. So, in 2012, a movie called The Marshal of Finland was released. In this movie, the president, the protagonist, was changed to a black guy in modern Kenya, but which was WWII Finland at the same time. They also addet a frame story about a narrator who tells this story to children, and who also highlited that "this is how it all really happened." And as you might guess, that movie flopped very badly when it was released. Many were angry and traumatized that the historical president of Finland, who was supposed to be the white guy, had been changed so radically and black washed.
That's pathological! I'm glad that the movie flopped. I didn't realize that Finland had become so woke. Did they make a movie of the best sniper of all time in black-face yet?
Don't forget.. British Queen Anne Boleyn was played by a black woman. A movie/show was about Queen Charlotte of Spain but she was black washed. In a Broadway show in NY a black man was used to play British King Richard III. Also, what makes these things creepy af is that they don't ever use Hispanic, Asian, Indian Middle Easterners etc. to racewash but ALWAYS use black people every single time. Mind you, African Americans make up only 13% of the population with Hispanics being almost 3x that number in pop.
I understand why they decided to put black actors in the "Troy" show for social motivations, but I agree with you, it doesn't make sense at all. And again I'm with you 100% when you say "show us the rich African culture and history", there is a lot of interesting stories that took place in Africa through all history.
It would be equally stupid fe. to have a white actor portraying Shaka Zulu... But sometimes such things do work, fe. when its a comedy, or if it`s done in a proper way and it fits the storyline. It worked well in the 1989 movie version of the Hindu epic, Mahabharata by Peter Brook. But it was a story about the history of mankind and the actors came from all over the world. A biblical movie fe. about the Genesis or Noah and the flood would also work with ethnic diversity.
Is there "rich African history" though? I know jackshit about their history, culture and mythos prior white colonization. To be frankly my understanding of current Africans bogs down to a bunch of people living in constant poverty and killing each other with Kalashnikovs and riding Hilux'es with machineguns. That sounds racists, but it's not meant to be. It's rather ignorance caused by the fact that media doesn't try to reach me and showcase the African culture(they do show starving kids and savage warlords though), but rather blackwashes European history and mythos instead.
I loved Vikings, I thought they handled race pretty well, although they WAAAAY overdid the shield maiden thing. But what always cracked me up was how they swung their shields like tennis rackets, so that 90% of the time, the shield isn't covering the warrior at all.
Africa: has lot of characters, empires, history, tragedies, rulers, tyrants. Hollywood: Alright, I see that, but I want a black man playing a non black character because "representation" (and because I don't want to invest money in good stuff and playing it safe)
Actually it's more like Hollywood: We'll put someone of color in that role because we won't have to pay them as much. .......... It's all about $$$$$$$.
And that's the problem. I would kill for a biopic on Shaka Zulu or the Ethiopian royal family. More people ought to know about Menelik II of Ethiopia or Mali's Mansa Musa or even Haiti's Papa Doc. They'd make great movies, but in a PC world you know what the movies would say.
You actually tackled this. As a black individual I'm not interested in disproportionately representing Blacks in Western culture. I'd be much more interested in the history of Blacks in their own culture. I'm not saying Black/Africans were non-existent in the west or vice versa, but let's get it right people and not pander to political agendas.

Ian Miller The problem with that game is that what the developers think is histoically accurate about life in the middle ages is actually a idealized fantasy for white males. The real middle ages were more diverse than they present it. At least I got the sense that the game was an insulting presentation of a white male power fantasy. Henry's father slapping his mother's ass in the first seconds of the game, literally every woman wants to bang Henry , (spoiler) when Henry finds his dead parents, he completely ignores his mother. It just goes on and on. I liked many parts of the game, but when it comes to historical accuracy, there is a good case to be made that the developers chose a version of history that is very pleasant for them (or their expected audience) to believe regardless of accuracy.
First off, where is your evidence of the middle ages being more diverse than they presented, because it would appear as an uphill battle to prove such a claim. Secondly, I think your point regarding the white male power fantasy is you reading into/projecting onto things where there is nothing. Concerning the "white", no-one in the game is white, they are Germans, Czechs, and Hungarians (this is how we Europeans categorize by ethnicity) all slaughtering each other. If the game presented a "white power fantasy" all the "white" people would magically unite and stand against a foreign [put skin colour here] invader. In regards to the "male", the developers had to show the audience Henry came from a good loving home, as the breaking of the family is supposed to be the catalyst and main driving force of the story. The simplest way to illustrate this is by showing the parents are good to Henry and are still heavily in love with each other, in turn the quickest form to relay this information is by showing they are still playful/sexually attracted to one another even after all this time. Also of course everyone and their mother wants to sleep with Henry, the main protagonist (male or female) always gets all men/women. It's a sleazy way to show the player the character is of high importance in the community or charismatic without much effort. After all Henry is supposedly the hero of the story, the plot centers around him, everyone requires his help, and his help alone will resolve the matter. So simply put all men want to be him and all women want to sleep with him. I would like to conclude saying if anything the story is a hero power fantasy, not “white”, not “male”, and certainly not “white male”. If Henry was a Chinese woman in pre-Yuan China, all npc’s were of different Chinese provinces or Mongols, and the plot remained overall the same we similarly wouldn’t call it an Asian female power fantasy.
The area even TODAY has only a few percent non white people. The chance of running across someone non white today is pretty low - a few hundred years ago basically 0.
Any creators who put black characters where they don't fit is simply admitting that they don't value black history and culture enough to make any work of art which is actually reflective of black history or culture.
3 years old and this issue has unfortunately only gotten worse. Like you, I'd freaking binge watch a series on African history. Some very interesting stories waiting to be told.
Has it? I feel like portraying characters generally understood to be white as black was bigger in the 90s. Obviously, that doesn't affect what's happened in the past 3 years, and also I'm mainly thinking of fiction like Shakespear.
@@greg_4201 medieval Ethiopia for one, but I'm betting there is a lot of dramatically interesting history to be found to create many documentaries and books, rather than "blackwashing" other hostiry, for example. Obviously a point of preference, no-one is forcing anyone to watch such shows. I'm merely suggesting there is material to draw from..
I am African and I approve this. I had the same argument with friends when I said I don’t want a black James Bond nor a woman 007. Want a black or woman spy? Make a new cool character and stop being lazy by making diversely knock-offs. Thank you!
I think the true racists/misogynists aren't the ones against a black/female Bond. The true racists are the ones that think an original black or female character can't be popular.
Your argument is moronic. 007 is just an agent. They had other 007 agents before "current" 007 and they'll have different ones after the current ones retire. 007 is not a person, it's a designation. It could be anything! I can't wait for a black 007 or a woman 007 and I loved almost all 007 movies. The problem is having a woman James Bond. James Bond is the actual 007. If James Bond retires, another agent will be codenamed 007. That's the point. James Bond is a person. There's no woman named James. However there could well be an agent named .. Sally or whatever and this agent could be the new 007.
@@DimitriMoreira I think he meant James Bond as a person, not as 007 the designation. As you said, a female 007 is just an agent designated 007 but a female James Bond is silly.1
Remember when people were mad at Gods of Egypt for making Set white? Where was that outrage when the BBC made Zeus black or when the MCU made Heimdall black and British?
Honestly, as a black man who loves my long hair, I had more than an issue with Achilles being cast as a black actor. Why was he bald!? Did the writers not realize that he was among many of the LONG HAIRED ACHAEANS? And at least do some Chris Brown blonde hair to match the text if you want to make him black! It really angers me that we are still being petty enough to make black representation in works that it has no business on. My rich African heritage is home to multiple epics deriving from Africa (not Egypt, but further south)! Instead of trying to take well known epics and perverting them, we should be attempting to promote actual African works that allow young black people to feel a sense of pride in their own epics rather than cause confusion and make us think that we are so uncultured that we don't have our own rich history and have to impose on others'. And it is much more than Achilles' helmet, but his armor is wrong as well. At least efforts such as Peter Connolly attempted reconstructions that are a better match for a Mycenaean Bronze Age Achilles in helmet, armor and shield. The biggest issue however, would probably boil down to trying to center the narrative around Paris and Helen. That was a poor idea. I also think that the writers didn't really pay enough attention to the Iliad, because it is made clear that the Trojan war was not about a single city called Troy, but rather multiple cities in the region called Troy. Achilles fought in Troy and during his campaigns in the years leading up to the Iliad sacked over 20 cities. Ilios/Ilium was the city that was at siege in the Iliad. Scenes like making Achilles and Patroclus have a sexual relationship are also problematic, because no matter which side you fall on debating the status of their relationship (war buddies or lovers), not once was their a scene that included a sexual aspect in the Iliad or other works attributed to the Trojan Cycle. The Minoan additions to the art and culture were also unwelcome, further demonstrating just how ignorant the writers were of the mini series, attempting to score some archeology points even when they were misplaced. I have yet to find myself a solid/accurate Greek movie/show that I can ship. I am rapidly losing hope in ever seeing one in my lifetime, and am disgusted that we have begun to pervert these great works with political correct nonsense. You need to keep doing your thing, informing others on historical accuracy despite modern controversy!
Ironically, all the black washing still comes from a white person's view of what a black one should look like. It is still probably a bunch of white people profiting from blackness. Nothing has changed but now it's just being packaged as progressive.
Ah, bless you! I was wondering if there was *anyone* who remembers the legendary/ historical origins of this story. I believe there was, in fact, one notable ‘non-PoC’ in the saga- Memnon. I could be wrong, it has been *an age* since I last read it. {Edit; he mentioned Memnon while I was typing} I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for a Trojan War epic that’s either accurate to Homer, or the history of the era- I’d be happy with either, would prefer both- were it possible... but don’t hold out hope for any of the above. I feel like this is the unfortunate reality- much as I *love* history, myths & legends- & would love to see more on screen, Hollywood people are always going to think they *need* ‘reinterpreting’... uh, isn’t the *point* that this stuff is *timeless* ? Why do modern ideas, ideals & attitudes have to be superimposed over *everything* - especially where it is least needful? Why does everything have to be ‘repackaged’ or whatever, to make an impact on a modern audience? Why does dressing historical figures in modern clothes, with modern hair/ makeup, or speaking modern slang or using anachronistic items somehow immediately make them more ‘relatable’ or ‘relevant’ ? F*ck off with that BS! How am I supposed to take a historical production seriously, if I can literally *see* the inaccuracies with my amateur enthusiast eyes? If I can Google, or look up the right information in a book, in less than 20 mins... you dun f*cked up, I don’t care how much money you threw at it. Like, I was disappointed with both Hercules films, but at least the Rock one was kind of fun- if dumb... it wasn’t actively insulting me like the Lutz & Disney ones did- at least Kevin Sorbo, Paul Telfer & the Rocks’ Herculeses *looked* impressive- even the ones with small budgets had something to them- the Lutz one felt like a lazy & moronic tax write-off. Sorry for the rant, lol.
A Black African person (I say black because of a lot of Africans aren't black) doesn't need to be a part of a European story to make them not to feel included but to present their culture in their own history and stories. And it is extremely annoying to praise upon one story one culture when they are so many stories in Africa that are as interesting and rich as European ones. For example Axum an African kingdom had a very cultured history, even had painted and decorated uniforms for their soldiers!
Zlatan Ibrahimovic Thank you. Your unbiased comment is a breath of fresh air. It's great to see a black man that really knows his history. I hope this catches on in black culture instead of this worship of gangsters.
Achilles was a black woman. Strong, independent, empowered, brave, courageous, loud, pushy and she used to say: " Mmmmmmm Hhmmmmmm" (It's ancient Greek I can't translate that)
The sad part they claim that Roman Empire was multicultural but every movies that comes out when ever there is a Roman who is from a north African origin. They make him black. Till now I never seen a north african roman not portrait as black
I'm glad that there also black people offended by this nonsense. They have their own history and ways, this just belittling their culture manifesting it as if they have no history or original story themselves, which is absolutely wrong. Ethiopia has many original stories from ancient alliances with Persia, Greece, Rome, Arabs, and so on. Add the Moors and European wars to that and you have a whole saga.
Yes, blacks have their own separate histories just like the british have theirs, yet when they portray ancient Greece, they use non greek looking british people.

Not even joking, this actually happened at my college, the drama department put on a rendition of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar starring only Black Women and black female Caesar who wore a white double breasted admiral's uniform had a white female wife. Then during the assassination, all the non-characters that killed Caesar were white guys that shouted homophobic, sexist, and racist slurs while they killed Caesar. Literally not making this up, it was fucking awful.
I'm black and I agree with everything you said. I'm all for having black actors in starring roles but replacing well-known historical characters that are white with Black people just for the steak of having a black person in a starring role is wrong and historically inaccurate.
While I agree wholeheartedly with his point about history and historical figures I disagree on depiction of mythology. Mythic, legendary characters may be re-imagined. The story of the Rage of Achilles is legend and myth, after all, not history. Not fitting Homer's depiction is only relevant if you are purporting to exactly depict Homer's Iliad, rather than telling the story your own way. Myths and legends passed through millennia are interpreted and retold by the culture doing the imagining, seeing themselves as the characters, taking their own lessons. Shouldn't it be expected that a multi-racial society would imagine them with multi-racial characters? I'm not against all-white, black ,asian, or whatever depictions of myths, it's artistic choice, but there is no reason why they can't be multi-racial either.

I've always wondered why Hollywood or another hasn't really done a good movie/show about Mansa Musa. A real, larger than life, African king with serious power and influence. Also considered the wealthiest man in history.
It's because their agenda is steal what isn't theirs and erase what actually happened and place themselves into it. Literally everything they say that the White man has done is literally everything they are doing.
Well I think eventually they will. But in true American/Hollywood fashion he will now be depicted as a bald transgender handicapped Puerto Rican to not only make it as historically accurate as possible, but to include everyone.
Why? Because they're racist af and their insistence on race-swapping is really just them overcompensating for profit and positive PR. Also, it'd bring to light that black people enslaved other black people, and that goes against the notion that black people have only ever been oppressed by white people.
As a Greek i m offended by black Achilles.Same way as an African would be if Dolph Lundgren played Shaka Zulu or an American would be if Morgan Freeman played George Washington or an African American would be if Malcolm X would be nicely played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Its just not right.
Because they weren't black. if you want to see what ancient egyptians looked like, type "Coptic" into google. good grief. there were blacks in the upper kingdom, but that was due to conquest. the main body of egyptians were north africans. and tan with more white-ish features. definitely not ssa black. and the blacks that were in egypt were more akin to ethiopans than congans or nigerians.
Not at all. MLK, Malcom etc their entire identity is based on their blackness. Thats not the case of Achilles, the latter isn't even human for Gods sake.
African Lore isn't trendy, and ofc blacks in this country aren't going to want that. They'd rather hijack light characters just to be possessive over what isn't theirs to begin with.

Recently while laying with a female friend of mine I was begged to watch this show ( Troy) of which she couldn’t stop talking. She however couldn’t understand as to why I was so Infuriated by all the black people on that show. I get that it’s not a true story so it doesn’t really have to be historically accurate but understand that people like me who take history seriously despise ridiculous representations of the past. Look at it this way ,if you were a boxer, martial artist, ballerina, or a car buff, and you saw those art forms being horribly mis-represented you would get annoyed too. Shame

Well, judging by the trends, next movie about Zulu will have norwegian actor playing Chaka... leading army of Korean actors against white imperialists XD
Or how about a film on Amanirenas? Meroitic queen, apparently one-eyed, fought the Romans in Egypt around 24 BC, famously carried off the head of a statue of Augustus and ceremoniously buried it under the steps of a temple dedicated to her victory. Afterward, the Romans sent in a retaliatory army. However, the resulting treaty was noted to favor the Meroites, so the campaign was at most indecisive. In the end, they certainly didn’t treat them like they did the Parthians, but the Meroites didn’t have to pay tribute, unlike almost everyone else at the time. Right here, you have an excellent story: a woman, certainly black-skinned (from a kingdom noted for having many ruling queens, no less!) and apparently present on battlefield to some extent since she was one-eyed, defeating a mighty empire not known for being defeated often. Amanirenas also must have had an effect on the Romans, because her title, Kandake, carried over into Roman culture as a name, Candace. Have her played by the actress playing Queen of Sheba on American Gods and she’d be fantastic. Then again, I’m sure they’d manage to fvck that up too with the usual political fungi. The usual about whites and white men, I imagine.
Калинка Моя nah I feel that movie would get too preach, like how most movies do nowadays, about women power and how women can do anything and can run things even better than men. They might even try to push a yeah black power over white power narrative. Like please no, can we just get a good story without any stupid politics please
Smeghead lmao that would make no sense scientifically because black people have good genetics for hot climates and white Vikings have good genetics for cold temperatures. Lol. So saying Vikings were black is like saying fuck DNA and fuck science.
I had a similar argument with a friend when they tried to make the great general Hannibal Barca a black man in the documentary series Barbarians Rising. Hannibal Barca's home country of Carthage may have been in North Africa, but Carthage was started by a runaway princess named Dido from Tyre that bought the land that Carthage was built on. So, although Carthage was founded in North Africa it was mostly populated by non-African light skinned people from outside of Africa.
The real tragedy is that instead of placing black characters in historically inaccurate roles, the movie industry could be covering some amazing African history which many Westerners are unfamiliar with. For instance, how many movies have we seen about the great Kushite Kingdom and the Nubians?? None.
Seeing a movie about the richest man (a black king) going around tossing gold at everyone like dirt then collapsing Egypts' economy and being like "damn" would be great. (I don't remember who it was)
Why make Archiles black? It doesnt make sense. This will be like making a white guy play shaka the zulu in screen show. There are great african stories they could make a film out of instead of portraying troy as blacks.Troy is a greek story.

As an African, I totally agree with you Metatron. Portraying characters as black just for "diversity" sake is very patronising to Africans. Rather make shows about actual Africans like Zera Yacob, King Abraha, Sundiata, Mansa Musa etc

Why doesn't Shad's name have a checkmark????
Completely agree, a brave thing to do. This video, Shad's comment on The Last Jedi and discussions about female warriors are much needed corrections which may contribute to stabilise society in some way. Because one thing about the pendulum swing is that it tends to swing back at some point. This ultra politically correct posturing which the BBC seems to like so much will create more extreme positions on the other side and thereby probably give rise to real racism.
But he didn't ask the MOST IMPORTANT question... BUT WHAT ABOUT DRAGONS!?!?
Why don’t they just make a series about Ethiopia or another true African nation?
Darth Guilder because it doesn’t fit the agenda... That’s the point Metatron is making. These producers aren’t interested in fair historical representation of blacks, or even actual levels of social equality.
This is a political stance for them, and nothing more. It is the ability to proverbially walk above their political detractors and say “we are progressive, and therefore anyone else is wrong...” It’s discourteous.
It always seems to be more about erasing or rewriting what is already there instead of creating something new.
Darth Guilder Exactly, if done well it would be fascinating.
Precisely. The Russian-Ethiopian relations as two Orthodox coubtries alone is a great and barely known topics.

Yep. They hate redheads because they represent something they can't have: red hair and beautiful ivory skin.
Ginger bias..it's everywhere.

It isn't an individual issue and not really anyone's fault besides those who try to continually sell this idea. It is nice you were an individual who sought out that knowledge but many have no idea on even how to learn or get to that knowledge. So they never even were given a chance to learn. Its rediculous even that we have to say that.

A biblical movie fe. about the Genesis or Noah and the flood would also work with ethnic diversity.
true!
Is there "rich African history" though? I know jackshit about their history, culture and mythos prior white colonization. To be frankly my understanding of current Africans bogs down to a bunch of people living in constant poverty and killing each other with Kalashnikovs and riding Hilux'es with machineguns.

Zasumbadji can't tell if this is serious or not
No it wasnt more diverse from hitorical perspective
The area even TODAY has only a few percent non white people. The chance of running across someone non white today is pretty low - a few hundred years ago basically 0.

The problem is having a woman James Bond. James Bond is the actual 007. If James Bond retires, another agent will be codenamed 007. That's the point.
James Bond is a person. There's no woman named James. However there could well be an agent named .. Sally or whatever and this agent could be the new 007.

{Edit; he mentioned Memnon while I was typing}
I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for a Trojan War epic that’s either accurate to Homer, or the history of the era- I’d be happy with either, would prefer both- were it possible... but don’t hold out hope for any of the above.

A Black African person (I say black because of a lot of Africans aren't black) doesn't need to be a part of a European story to make them not to feel included but to present their culture in their own history and stories.

Some say the first shogun of Japan was black.
Somebody please stop this.
lol
Smeghead lmao that would make no sense scientifically because black people have good genetics for hot climates and white Vikings have good genetics for cold temperatures. Lol. So saying Vikings were black is like saying fuck DNA and fuck science.
There were actually a black samurai.
I heard that there was a black samurai, NOT a shogun.
Drew 5498 no.....he actually was a Samurai.
"Spoiler alert Troy falls"
Nnnnnnnoooooooooo DX
Spoiler alert:
It was Dio the whole time.
Decanus Gaius Publius the good thing is that the Trojans went and founded Roma.
You thought it was a wooden horse, but it was I! DIO!
Liquor Fan ohh?
Your saying Romulus and Remus are Trojans?
Decanus Gaius Publius According to Roman legend, most famously described in the Aeneid, they were descendants of Trojans.
The real tragedy is that instead of placing black characters in historically inaccurate roles, the movie industry could be covering some amazing African history which many Westerners are unfamiliar with. For instance, how many movies have we seen about the great Kushite Kingdom and the Nubians?? None.
That would be awesome
or malians
A series about the Songhai would be fascinating.
Seeing a movie about the richest man (a black king) going around tossing gold at everyone like dirt then collapsing Egypts' economy and being like "damn" would be great. (I don't remember who it was)
@@kyraptor2521 Mansa Musa. The richest man of all time.
Why make Archiles black? It doesnt make sense. This will be like making a white guy play shaka the zulu in screen show. There are great african stories they could make a film out of instead of portraying troy as blacks.Troy is a greek story.
Very well said
@Nati Natan Jesus was never white
@Nati Natan jesus wasn't white but Achilles wasn't black
@Nati Natan ok explain how both were black then
@@okosuntom2808 Jesus was a Middle Eastern man from what is now modern day Israel. Have you seen what people in Israel and that area look like? There's a very good chance that Jesus actually WAS white!
Obcession the BBC has with putting black people were they never were, is becoming a psychiatric study right now. Making my thesis on it.
Thank you, this was very brave of you to make considering how hostile people are when they hear other people speak their minds, thank you so much for actually talking about why this is a problem.
“If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell.
thinking about how that guy was part of the Order of the Golden Dawn makes me want to stress vomit
@Brian killen Maybe it is off-topic, but because of you quoting this, i have inspiration for my college essay, so thank you haha.
@@gottaproxy8826 Where on Earth did you get that from? The Order of the Golden Dawn disbanded the same year that George Orwell (real name Eric Arthur Blair), was born! Anyways, it was only a pseudo-Pagan/Occult society of the late Victorian era, not some neo-Nazi/Fascist society, like that of the modern Greek far-right political party called, Golden Dawn; or maybe you're getting confused with the sexual perversion of 'Golden Showers'? :D
I'm a writer, and you have no idea how many people in the community are of the "We should be more inclusive in our writing" mentality rather than consuming art from other cultures. I'm Peruvian and have Italian heritage. Not ONCE I have seen people from South America complain about the lack of white people in our literature. This new "woke" movement doesn't realize that to become inclusive they ought to consume the art from other cultures rather than try to shove it into theirs. I wholeheartedly agree with your statements.
The sheep mentality of everyone suddenly going bonkers and turning their brains off is so hard to comprehend for me
Woke? Obviously you never read the source material, the Iliad. It’s more inclusive than what Hollywood would lead you to believe. There is a prince from Ethiopia and Amazon warriors which are women.
Have you ever read Greek history? Read on the Mycenae, which had a large Black population.
This isn’t new “woke”, this is a bunch of racists on TH-cam who only want to see white male heroes.
Stop getting your history from Hollywood and open up a book.
@@gmontezuma6770 As far as colors is concerned, you have given a "red herring." Stay on topic. The main complaint is that Achilles/Akhilleus is NOT black. We are not "racists," and you are not a moron. Dialogue is called for, not mutual vituperations.
You speak of the neo-classical method of teaching. Where one is taught WHAT to think, rather than HOW to think.
@@gmontezuma6770 Mycenae had a large black population? Tell me some more bullshit. And also, there is not a single text that has EVER mentioned a black population in Mycenaen Greece. Not a single mention of Ethiopians in Mycenaen Greece, which is how they would have said black. We know almost nothing of Mycenaen Greeks and the only European civilization that we know even less of is, is the Minoans of Crete. That's how little we truly know.
You open a fucking book and stop watching hollywood depictions. You could say its possible sure, but don't you dare say you or anyone KNOWS anything because if they do, it hasn't been published. Goddamn woke dipshits just can't stop trying can they? It's like a sickness or an obsession with them to insert Black into ANYTHING. Next they'll be saying there were black Native Americans and black Chinese.
And people have blown Yasuke out of proportion. Yasuke was a swordbearer. Literally a fancy servant THAT WALKED AROUND CARRYING SOMEONE ELSE'S SWORD THAT HE WAS NEVER ALLOWED TO EVEN TAKE FROM ITS SCABBARD. Not a samurai. The only time the man likely saw combat was the night Oda Nobunaga was attacked and killed in Honnoji and only then because he had no choice either way if he even survived more than a few minutes to do anything at all, and it is completely unknown what even happened to him. Nothing was ever written. Despite being the only black man in Japan, he was STILL that forgettable.
Would be nice to see actual black and african stories than black-washing historically non-black figures. Like we don't need to be doing these things at all.
I wouldn't mind seeing a TV show covering Mansa Musa's epic pilgrimage.
I don't know who Mansa Musa is but this sounds epic. I love stories about people traveling
Fulmen It was a filthy rich afrikan king.He basially toured arround North afrika to let People know just how Rich he was.
Louis Rudy wait... Was he the same guy who was so rich that when he did his pilgrimage to Mecca he spent so much gold the freaking inflation of the city's currency skyrocketed?
+KingBranden The Mansa's Hajj in itself is worth a 3-hour Oscar-winning movie.
I'm sure they've got some really interesting mythology there too. I'm all for exposing western audiences to different mythologies besides just Greco-Roman and Norse. I'd love to see more stuff based on Indian/South-Asian Mythology personally.
