  • Matt Ochoa has spent every dime he has from flipping burgers at In-N-Out on his turbocharged GMC Canyon pickup truck, turning an otherwise humble work vehicle into a quarter-mile monster. So when we called sport trucks "hilariously useless," he took personal offense and offered us a chance at redemption. Will the Canyon change our mind about sport trucks? Let's find out.

      Dazdso Working with a friend to turn the 4L60 into a sequential box. After that, who knows. Probably an obscene amount of power, new seats, and a 4-point roll bar.

      thyringmaster They CAN smoke a manny when properly built, but generally speaking, the 4LXX are dogs. When they're tuned and built right, they're strong as hell and have OK shift times, but the stock trans with just basic stuff like servos and a tune is a dog.

    Hater comments on this video are the least necessary thing in the world. The kid probably throws 75% of his salary into it and loves the truck. What did you expect on an In & Out salary? A tuned skyline making 1000bhp? Comeon guys, take it for what it is.

      Exactly.
      It was a free truck, and he chose to make it a decent looking but deceptively fast truck. And, it'll haul bikes out to the Baja, couches, and ass(if so requested), all weekend long.

Just make sure you press the launch control next time you're sitting in a GTR, even if the guy says no.

    I think of the truck as a modern reincarnation of a Syclone, I like it. And honestly I thought about a Colorado as my first car but I didn't have any use for a truck. And honestly if he's getting 20+ mpg from his little canyon then his gas mileage is comparable to that of my 99 SC300, from my point of view I really like that he went off the deep end with his build and made the best out of what he has, but hey, I'm just a 16 yr old with my 0.02 ..

    Dude was very humble, I love that he did something a little different than most people would. People criticize and say he should have gotten a lightweight car and done this, but the fact that it' s a damn pickup truck and it can run 12's probably brings him more satisfaction than any lightweight car would.

    My grandmother left me a 1972 4 door Nova with 307 and 2bbl. When that car finally died it was a 355 4 bbl and left me with tonnes of fun memories.
    Haters hated that too until it walked away on them to 125mph where it just didn't go any faster.

    I've been one of Matt's critics, but I think he did well this time. This is 'Americana' as it gets these days, and reminds me of the hot-rodders of the 1950's - they weren't rich guys, they were teenagers with old jalopies or whatever they could get.
    On top of that, it's one of 'our' builds in that it's a viewer's own truck. That's pretty cool.

    A rearmount Turbo I5 running, basically low 12's, 335hp/330tq? I'm impressed. So it's an auto, so it's a truck, so it's not a bay turbo. It's basically a one of a kind awesome.

      i dont see how this thing is running low 12's with only 335 whp and 3600 lbs of weight. I am going to say BS on the HP numbers. theres no way that truck is running low 12.s when a 5.0 mustang with 380 whp on drag radials runs low 12's and only 3400 lbs. It has to be making more than 335 whp.

      DOMINION PIE The Canyon weights in at about 35-3600 lbs. gross, where the Mustang weights in between 36-3800. Like Matt said, on shotty lanes and road tires it does high 12's. Being that it's an auto, it's going to shift faster. With the lag, I can see it doing low 12's easy with a flat, straight lane and slicks.

    Very coincidental I stumble across this video, seeming that my father left to me his extended cab 2005 GMC Canyon that’s currently undergoing an ls3/4l80 swap as a tribute to him.. I could never get rid of the truck and we were always building wild rides throughout the years and I know he’d be smiling just to see it’s state now.. and what’s even crazier is the original i5 motor and trans have over 400k miles and still performed amazing.

      Exactly. Those were really cool vehicles and GM hasn't put forth something like it since. This Canyon SS turbo is a cool idea.... I'd probably try to find a beefier rear end, manual trans, etc but for re-using the I-5 and slapping a turbo on it with some chassis parts, it's a great sleeper truck somewhat on the cheap.

    Nice and very clean truck. So glad he didn't add a bunch of plastic stuff to "customize" it. Cool thing about this is it can be used for going to work, pick up something no one's sedan can carry after work, then with the washing machine in the bed you light up the tires a blow past some show-but-no-go cars. I like it much.
    Matt can we see another set of tires roasted on this one? That opening clip was such a tease.

    Love this. Personally I'm a fan of sport trucks, I don't know why but there's just something about street/track style trucks that appeals to me. However, I can see where Matt is coming from when he calls them useless.

    I know this might not be everybodys cup of tea, but that's what so great about the tuning scene, diversity. I am sure there are a couple of truck guys out there saying this is the best tuned video ever. Different people tune different cars, differently.
    So yeah, can't wait for the video in which you showcase a well built EK9!

    I was really hoping Matt would make the point he made around 6 minutes. This stuff absolutely does seem silly to put that kind of money into that kind of truck, but when it's all you've got, and you have to bust your ass to slowly acquire and install part after part and build a fun ride, you work with what you've got. It's about owning a vehicle that you can afford, and slowly personalizing/improving as you can. Overall I agree about sport trucks, but still I would love to test drive that.

    This is a cool build. I like how it uses an inline 5. It reminds me a little bit of the old school Audi's with a turbo inline 5. I wish GM would do a modern Syclone and Typhoon.

    The F-150 Tremor is fixing to be one the few practical sport trucks. The aftermarket potential of that thing will be huge. Over 500 ft-lb's easily with bolt-on's.

    Interesting build, but for the cost of a turbo kit, it would have been cheaper just to buy a LS 4.8L truck engine or maybe even a 5.3L for about $400-600 including accessories, ECU, wiring harness and do then do a cam swap and a tune.

      He's in CA and will have to pass smog. And for reasons I still cannot explain its easier to pass a turboed stock engine than swap in another block.

    Not my cup of tea, but I'm glad it's yours. The more hot rods of any sort the better.
    Farah, Glad to see you driving some smaller dollar builds. It's more interesting to me to watch this than something like the Hennessey Venom GT. Cool car, but I love seeing more grassroots stuff like this.

    The people bashing this build are whats wrong with the Automotive community. Who cares if you think its useless or he shouldve bought a car etc. Its what he loves and thats what matters, hes not building this to make you like it, if you like it, thats a bonus. But dont expect him to just not do something he loves because everyone else dislikes it.

    I drive a 1990 Chevy Silverado 454SS to work everyday, has 263K miles (engine is newer) and the rest is original 400 turbo and 14 bolt rear. I give my truck absolute hell and it never leaves me stranded. Sport trucks are about what you buy honestly. Mine is stock mostly besides headers exhaust etc.. just my two cents

      Those old 454SSs were awesome trucks and you are lucky to own one.
      I remember when they first came out, I thought they were so menacing-looking and absolutely loved them. I still do.
      The 4th gen C/Ks are among my favorite GM trucks, along with the 2nd gen S-10s. No GM truck since then has looked nearly as good as those body styles in my opinion.

    Love it! It's different, 5 cyl sounds awesome, and cmmon its a little GMC truck so it's cool as hell. Sure you can make a car go faster with all the money and be like everybody else or you can build something only you have and be different. I applaud this guy

    Respect for a burger modded truck. He's done quite a bit with the income he's got. I'd always suggest saving up and go do the college thing, but car hobbies are addictive. I too put thousands into a car with nary a dollar to my name. It's just what kids do, and it does certainly make adolescence a whole lot more fun.
    If Matt wants to get better at driving, he should really start looking at local autocross clubs and start going to some events. It's about as close to free as racing gets and a great way to get legal seat time. The time will also highlight shortcomings and let him continue to develop the vehicle in addition to being quick in a straight line.

    I actually prefer the everyday random guy builds more than shop or super rich guy builds. Built on burgers or not that guy loves it and thats what really matters. The passion to build.

    Do you get faster times with a cover on the bed, or with the tailgate off? A lot of pickups do this for better aero.

    Rear brakes:
    I woke up this morning, and one thing hit me while lying there in bed... Not sure if Matt has ever owned pickup trucks other than his modern and heavy Ford, but when I've jammed the brakes on in empty trucks, it's not as if rear disk brakes would have done anything different - as long as drums are set up correctly, there is only so much braking the rear can do before they just lock up from being un-weighted. Mere rear disk brakes on the rear of this build would mean next to nothing if the additional technology of rear anti-lock weren't with the system... and while I'm not sure such aftermarket rear disc brakes are to be had on the market, if they do exist I have to imagine they are a pretty penny indeed since they'd have to come with their own sensor and pulse system.
    IMHO, not worth it on a truck that doesn't have its bed loaded down.

      Not sure if you ever realized it, but the performance of brakes in sporty cars is measured by how fading resistent they are. I just upgraded the brakes on my mountainbike as well, even though I could easily block the tires with the old brakes. My new brakes (2013 Formula The One, a hell of a brake !) hold up much longer when going for a long downhill where you have to break often.
      Additionally I am going to upgrade the brakes on my bmw 525i E39 as well in near future. If you have to brake down from 240 km/h to 80km/h the brake is at its end. Bigger rotors from an E46 M3 and a brembo 4 piston fixed calipers from the older 7 series will do the job!

      Ok, this might be your let me call it "american-point-of-view" :)
      Here in Germany brakes are a highly inspected and important part of the car, because everyone is allowed to drive on the autobahn as fast as he/ she wants. Imagine a bmw 7 series coming with 160 miles per hour from the back having insufficient brakes...
      In the US you don't have these strict laws, that forbid you to tune your car in any ways like it is in Germany. Every single modification has to be approved by an instance that is called TÜV. Unfortunately tuning in Germany has become very expensive and complicated because of that. It's even illegal to change your wheels (the wheel type, not the act of changing itself) without getting a fine if not approved by the TÜV.

      ***** Unfortunately, yes. Once I have been in Cleveland for a few weeks. I helped building an E36 M3 Track car for the Oktoberfest at the mid Ohio race track. When the owner told me he could literally drive that thing on the road - My mind was blown...
      My secret evil genius future plan is to combine US automobile laws with german Autobahn. This would be a paradise!

    This reminds me of myself. I work at a detail shop and put everything into my 1996 VW Golf GTI VR6 which I bought myself. I have installed a 60 trim Garrett turbo, Raceland coils, a stage 2 clutch, a short throw kit, and a full turbo back exhaust. She looks stock but I ate up a 6 speed LS2 GTO last week, haha.

    I respect this build, especially because it was his grandfathers and it probably has sentimental value and everything he did was done tastefully at least. He could have easily destroyed it like most kids around here do.

    He should of never put the 5 cylinder back in, LS motor all the way, then he has something that can compete in the quarter. Kudo's to him for doing it though, gotta start somewhere.

      Eric Johnson Why do what everybody else does? I bet if he put an LSx in it Matt wouldn't have looked twice at it or selected it for /tuned. You pull up at a track and people will yawn at an LSx swap which have been done, but a turbo 5 cylinder putting down some respectable numbers now that's going to raise some eyebrows. I have a lifted colorado with a powerdyne running 7psi on the 5 cylinder and although it isn't really fast or making crazy power everyone wants to sit and talk about it everywhere I go.

    Great little build on this truck. Have to respect the time and effort into building a sport tuck right and on a tight budget. When money is not an issue its easy to build or just buy a fast car or truck. Much respect to the kid on this gmc .

    Real cool build, sure some would scoff at modding a 5cyl but isn't what makes modifying a great hobby? Taking something slow or what you wouldn't expect and making it fast is pretty fun and kudos to him for doing something different.
