- Roasting a Terraria weapon for 5 minutes straight... The Beam Sword. It's not often I come across a weapon I hate on this channel... but today is a serious exception, with the extremely difficult to obtain- and incredibly weak Beam Sword. Man, where do I even start with this thing? Apart from it offering early Hardmode melee players a source of very low long distance damage, I genuinely think you'd be better using the Breaker Blade dropped from the Wall of Flesh... Yeah. Enjoy!

You know, I realize I might be slightly addicted to this game if I can remember most weapons' exact stats off the top of my head

I have 2k hours and i haven't even beaten duke fishron in vanilla
I actually have no idea what the stats are for most weapons outside of the very very early game because I usually have stuff that increases damage in my build and I never check what the damage is before those buffs
The beam sword is one of those weapons you don't go for, but you use if you happen to get it really early hardmode and have nothing else

The beam sword is just nostalgic for me because it was stampys hardmode weapon in his old legacy terraria playthrough.
YES, stampy used it for the early hardmode until he could replace it with the light disks. Nostalgia for it is HUGE

@@ZudinGodofWar yes, although it was exclusively during streams. it was a year or two ago.
The beam sword is essentially a victim of power creep... It was at least useful back in 1.2 when it was added but with the massive buffs to a lot of other melee weapons it just simply is a junk blade.
More than that, they just added so many better options. Pretty sure the Frostbrand was the only other weapon he mentioned in the video that came out before 1.3.
To be fair it was always pretty mid, but it wasn't as outclassed as it is now.
@orangejuice3235 As you said, it made some sense for it to be that way, it is an enchanted sword taking the place of the bone sword on the "would be nice to get in early (pre)hardmode".
Same situation with the bone sword too, with the iceblade existing.
Regular cavern loot has the issue of being immediately outclassed yet very rare since those items would otherwise clog player inventories.
Doesn't help either that the sword rework has immensely buffed the Terrablade tree, rendering even weapons from further stages obsolete.
The enchanted sword, which used to be top 3 (if not the best) sword of pre-hardmode, is now outclassed by 3/5 of Nights Edge's components, which is now strong enough to cruise through pre-mech.
The beam sword is just a bigger enchanted sword, it is obsolete even before being available.
A weapon I used to love but has become basically useless is the cutlass. Power creep put its use through the floor.

Or stronger. If it fired a projectile every swing and pierced at least 1 enemy, it would be at least okay.

The fact that the drippler crippler, *the* insanely strong weapon you skip because of obtainability, is easier to obtain is insane.

Nothing but bad memories of this weapon filling up my grinder chests with no purpose, being a pain to remove whilst also being unstackable. One of the reasons that I love magic storage ngl

I got the beam sword really early hard mode. It helped up until the true night's edge
I think calamity did this sword a little bit of justice and made it a lot better but in the end it still is just ok
they increased the size, made it shoot more projectiles and doubled the damage if i remember correctly
iirc, the beam projectile is buffed to have much more damage, more kb, and travels much faster which makes it somewhat of a melee version of a sniper. I remember keeping it even after its intended progression time bc I just really liked the projectile

i used that thing like once and i switched to the breaker blade after trying to kill a mech boss using it.
the breaker blade is much better since it has 50% armor penetration and it deals 500 damage on the first hit (after that its only 200 damage)
I used to love this thing in 1.2, it was like the bridge between the enchanted sword and the true night's edge/excalibur
I remember back in the old days, I used to be really happy I got this sword. It used to fire one projectile every swing and swing a lot slower. But it was so much more hard hitting and it really helped against the twins honestly. Seeing this makes me wonder

I think that most of such obscure weapons were added just so that each playthrough feels different. If you randomly get this thing once in a blue moon in one of your playthroughs - you can use it for some time and throw away after you find a better replacement.
Beam sword made some sense as a worse version of old terrablade that you got earlier, but terrablade moved on and that was forgotten in it's corner. Tbh, the drop rate isn't all that bad, considering How Common those skeletons are. Even in a plantera arena, they come in waves there.
Since we're talking about extremely rare melee weapons, how about an overview on the Terragirm and the Arkhalis? Both are my favorite melee weapons in the game.

My feelings are hurt time and time again when you disrespect the pirate staff day 202 beam staff ain’t that bad if you get it straight out of hardmode cough cough hardmode farm cough cough waffletime
Lowkey I love the pirate staff with the firecracker whip because they synergize really well, it has a lot higher base damage than the spider / blade staff
the same thing could be said about pirate staff

This was the weapon i used in early hardmode on my first ever playthrough! Crazy how differently differnt playthroughs can change depending on luck
idk if this is still the case, but the Calamity Mod buffs this sword to the moon. it used to swing extremely fast, but then it just became huge and did way too much damage.
The beam sword will always hold a special place in my heart as the weapon I beat the mechs with when 1.2 released, back then it just felt so good, despite it being almost the same as it is today.
remember folks, even if a weapon seems useless, it sitll has the use of elavating the value of all the good ones

I always though a combination of the beam sword and frostbrand would have been really cool.
I feel like the beam sword would fit better as a very late pre hardmode sword. Because atleast in pre hardmode the number of melee weapons with any projectile at all is very limited.
would be pretty cool if it was turned into a kind of greatsword like the breaker blade, with charged strikes on every 2nd or 3rd strike.

As someone who has gotten this sword too many times in my summoner playthroughs, i agree with this review entirely.
I used to love this thing as back then it was one of the first swords that have projectiles but now that so many melee weapons have good range it is pointless
At least it's not the Flintlock Pistol, it can only be gotten by buying it from the Arms Dealer but it gets out performed by the Musket, the Undertaker, and the Boomstick. It gets out performed by the weapons necessary to access it.

The Beam Sword is the bane of my existence im trying to farm a specific item but instead i get T H A T atleast you can "upgrade" it in calamity
Funnily enough I found this thing right after starting hardmode in one of my recent worlds so it was actually pretty useful
This brings back memories of farming for hours to get armour polish only to get like 5 beam swords
I vividly remember that in my very first playthrough of terraria (1.2), the beam sword was one of my first hardmode weapons. At the time, I played multiplayer with one of my friends, and I showed it off to her thinking it was the coolest thing ever.

This was surprisingly one of the first few weapons I got on my first time in hard mode back in like 2014-2015.
somehow this weapon helped me beat the twins for my 1st time actually back in 1.2
I actually quite like the beam sword. I got it on accident, and it carried me all the way up to post-goblin invasion
The weapon for when you've first started hard mode and you wanna build a Hallowed arena for those sweet hallowed drops
I started playing terraria back when 1.2.1 came out, when hero was using the chest glitch to make money in his world. On the first run I ever had that got to hardmode and while going around I randomly got it and my lord did it blow me away, back then it was one of the best projectile swords pre mech (afaik) and it was just so cool. Also it got a *great* rework in calamity, that mod did wonders for so many weapons
I often obtain this pretty quickly and I love using it in pre mech. I never thought it was bad
for some reason i always belived this waspon was a queen slime drop, since i found one in my inventory after opening the treasure bag
I always get the beam sword right after hard mode starts, so i use it to get through the ore mining, until I get something different
This weapon is nostalgic for me because when i first played in 1.2 and joined my brothers world it was the first weapon i was given and used
They should add a charge like others said. Maybe the charge makes you spin in a circle to fire beams everywhere like in Zelda and a buff for when at full HP since it's a reference to it. It'll should maybe do extra damage to 'evil' biome enemies maybe? It is supposed to be a reference to LoZ so, feels right to me. It'll also feel a bit better to use and not so much an annoyance if gotten accidentally during farming and clogs up your inventory.

A weapon of its time, made sense when it was new, now it has served its purpose
i remember getting this weapon in one of my first playthroughs and i first thought that maybe it would be good since its a projectile weapon, only to be completely disapointed by its absurdly low damage and projectile speed
Fun fact: Even if you were to sell it, you’d only get 3 gold. That’s the same amount the prehardmode, Green Rarity Enchanted Sword gives.
On my most recent playthrough, I hung around underground right after killing the Wall for like 10 minutes. I got a Beam Sword. It is actually a good weapon for dealing with the Queen Slime if you get it incidentally. It is not worth farming, for sure. But if you get it right after starting HM, it's perfectly serviceable. And with the Queen Slime having a relatively low defense, and having any sort of okay projectile/melee hybrid weapon being a big bonus for this particular fight...I think that is its niche. It is a tiny one.
I’m trying to come up with a challenge run where this thing would be useful, and the best I got is “weapons with the word sword in them only.” But you would also have access to the titanium/adamantine sword at that point, so how do those compare to the beam sword?
I usually do afk farms so its very common for me to see 5 of them in the ground after a little bit of afk
I knew this day would come... I remember getting into hard mode for the first time somehow thinking this sword was my next stage of progression. Lets just say I had a rough time.
Build a mimic farm prehardmode and you can pick this up while fishing for hardmode ores right after wall of flesh
I got the beam sword on my first armour skeleton drop and it really helped in early hardmode
when i got it in a playthrough not too long ago, i fought it was about as rare as an amarok, but i wasnt even close to guessing the rarity!
Turn it into a short sword is an effect similar to the one that empress drops
idk if you have a mob farm set up going into hardmode then its a great upgrade from nights edge for melee early hardmode imo even if its only very temporary
I think that doing a world tour would be pretty cool.
I think making the beam sword into a hard hitting chargable weapon would be a cool idea so that it can perform great against high defense targets in early hardmode such as turtles, and all those armored fricks.
They should make the beam sword like the sky dragons fury:
Left click to do a series of slashes like the terragrim
Right click to slash a beam out that can pierce 5 enemies & it'll be bigger and stronger if you have full health
Feels like something you'd see in the Example Mod
I got the beam sword right at the start of one of my hardmode playthroughs and it was super useful
It’s very easy to get it with almost any sort of underground coin farm. I almost always build one, and I get tons. Also basic underground is going to be much easier to get because of less possible spawns
I remember using this weapon in the old gen console versions, and loving it. I know it sucks, but its so fun
This hardmode variant of enchanted sword is hell useful for me when I first played Terraria and carried me early hardmode lol
The only time I’ve used that damn sword was in calamity where at one point it did like 500 dmg a swing at base.
I had to get superbuffed to be used that’s how bad it is.
My first ever armored skeleton dropped the sword and it carried me to plantera. It is just such a good melee until the terarium sword appears
I used the beam sword for a bit on my first playthrough, though it was on 3ds version and many of these dont exist there.
Also I'm fairly certain being in the hallow slowed things down considerably, plus the armor polish showed you had bad luck
imo the things the beam sword needs is
1. Piercing
2. Higher drop rate
3. Faster speed
4. Higher damage
granted the only reason I say this is because it should function like a weaker og terra blade, so at bare minimum make the projectiles come out every swing.
Up the drop rate, then make the projectile seek and pierce, allowing it to deal with crowds or hit the same target a few times! I feel like that’s fitting of the “beam” title

Literally took 3 hours straight of farming to get it (not including some days where I farmed and just didn’t get it). I really wish it was better. It really does deserve a buff now that the Tera Blade has been changed
The weapon is so bad that it doesn't even fire it's base projectile at the end of the video
It's purpose is making other weapons look good in comparison

I was playing the other day and got this, this was when I entered Hardmode too... I stuck with the Night's Edge.
I got it with a Legendary modifier during early hardmode while we trying to get souls of light lmao I might as well use it at the time
Honestly if it were moved to post-skeletron by dropping from angry bones it might be viable but even then you may have to buff it OR make it a part of the zenith and make the enchanted sword a direct upgrade to it
In calamity mod this sword is a part of prismatic breaker that honestly a pretty good post-moonlord weapon
It could be a nice pre hard weapon but in the way it is it needs a hard buff to even be barely useful.
Only reason I know what the beam sword is is because Stampy used it in his playthrough. I think someone he way playing with gave it to him early? Had no idea it got resprited recently
I always assumed that the thing only exists to be a reference to the Master Sword from Zelda
The best way to make this sword genuinely useful is by giving it an actual beam, like a single shot last prism
i used it once or twice getting them by chance lmao, for only the first 10 minutes of hardmode before the one that gives the wall of flesh was buffed but still...
The beam sword was one of the carries of my first terraria run, very fun times with this one and very luck too~

Yeah I only use it for like 10 minutes when I get it as a freak drop at the start of hardmode. Imo they should just make it craftable with souls of light and a enchanted sword and give it a slight damage buff.
The last time I unironicaly used it was in console 1.2 era since it was the best early hardmode sword I could get my hands on. Plus the projectile was much more exciting back then even if still very weak
Hopefully it will get a buff in the next update but I don't think it's too likely. I just wish it was comparable to the other options in this stage, for such a rare weapon you are not gonna get any use out of it
