    1:23 what they don't tell you in population numbers is that O'Fallon has also incorporated some areas for development the last 10 years. That new Target along 64 and a ton of houses along Greenmount has helped O'Fallon grow. Otherwise without that incorporated new development, it'd be a shrinking city like its neighbors.

      Plenty of room for expansion on the outskirts of Metro areas as there’s more undeveloped land.

    I lived in O'Fallon for 4 years when I was a kid in the late 90s. In fact, you drove right past my old neighborhood at 9:50 across the road from St. Elizabeth's hospital. I didn't even recognize the area at first because NONE of those buildings on the right side of the road were built back then. It was just open fields. Great memories :)

    O'Fallon is pronounced incorrectly in your video. The syllable -fal- rhymes with "pal." All the residents pronounce it this way. I live in O'Fallon, and I've never heard any local people pronounce it as if it rhymes with "fallen." Otherwise, thank you for documenting our city on your channel.

      His videos are fun, but he couldn't pronounce Swansea either. But I also thought the narration on these videos is electronic and he is just typing in the script and software is reading it. Those programs constantly get regional dialects and idioms wrong because they haven't been programed to correct for them. Maybe I was wrong! Maybe Chris just sounds like a robot in real life!😁

    12:41 you see that sign on the right side for St Clair Square? That's the mall, the only super regional mall for the metro east as Alton's mall is essentially toast.

    • @ChrisHarden

      I’d have a hard time thinking that Metro East could support more than one mall given todays climate.

    O’Fallon native, OTHS class of 2008. The town has seen substantial progress since I left for college, as it has undergone a transformation, of sorts, from a growing exurban community to more of a true suburb of St Louis. The growth within an admittedly (and regrettably) stagnant metro area and state has been driven primarily by Scott AFB and healthcare, with the addition of two new hospitals. That growth is not because of Illinois public policy but in spite of it, as the state continues to hemorrhage population.
    I work in corporate finance and live in Atlanta - a far more dynamic metro area - but I will always have fond memories of this town and Greater St Louis. The people are some of the kindest, friendliest, most unassuming folks that one could ever meet, and the quality of life is exceptional. If a foreigner were curious to understand more about the lifestyle and people in the interior of the country, I’d encourage them to visit this prosperous suburban town that is Middle America through and through. The world would be a better place if there were more towns like O’Fallon.

    And I’m just here for the mispronunciation of O’Fallon 😂

    2:00 Your assumption is correct. The road you were on was officially US 50 all the way through Fairview Heights into East St. Louis. It lost that designation in the early 70s after I-64 was built and the official US 50 route was moved over to follow the interstate out to the point where you started the video. You can tell who the old-timers are in Fairview if they refer to Lincoln Hwy/Lincoln Trail/St. Clair Dr. as "Route 50"...

    • @jackson5116
      @jackson5116 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I call it highway 50, grew up calling all those shops on Lincoln Trail on highway 50. I always thought it was highway 50.

    Thing about the st.clair county in the 618 area its chill to the max, u aint gotta worry about random shootouts, drivebys, maybe seeing a robbery somewhere at the least sure but nothing like chicago, st.louis, or LA, u will however see a intense car crash out of nowhere but that's it for craziness, to super wild stuff don't come unless u invite it there

  • @jackson5116
    @jackson5116 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    14:34 see interstate 64 straight ahead? THAT is why St Clair Square will be fine. As long as Scott Air Force Base exists, it'll keep southwestern Illinois a thriving area.

    • @ChrisHarden
      @ChrisHarden  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That makes sense. I wouldn’t say that Metro East is thriving though. O’Fallon and Edwardsville are nice places to live though.

    i think was brings Fairview Heights down as far as the numbers goes is the fact that it has a lot of retail and more opportunities for theft and property crimes with cars and such. Especially being just down the road from East St. Louis. If the video continued, it would start looking a little more rougher.

    • @jackson5116
      @jackson5116 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      and the Metrolink now connects Fairview with East St Louis, because they can ride the train and the bus through Fairview. As long as the mall stays Fairview will be fine, everything is dependent on St Clair Square.

    I just paid a visit to a "Mall" yesterday and to be honest...we need to stop blaming online shopping for these retailers who are struggling. Take a look at the prices of clothing at the stores commonly found in the mall while taking a good look at the material of said clothing and then head on over to Target and compare some of their clothing to what you seen in the mall...same material is used in most cases and the only difference is they slap a big name on the item and charge $60 more at the mall for something similar at Target you pay 3x less for.

    Fairview Hgts is going down hill due to what has been coming up from East St. Louis.... It is an undeniable fact.... I was born in East St. Louis when it was still a decent place, and the family moved up into the area of Caseyville Township where the intersection of 159 and 50 was a main point of the area.... Still mostly farms and wood lots when I was a kid.... the city of Fairview Hgts was established around 1970 some time..a good, safe place to live and raise families...... What a shame.....Quite a different place now.... If ruining good life is so called "progress",.................. You can HAVE it. O'Fallon is still a good place because of the AFB Scott AFB near by.... Military have to keep their own in line for the most part and the families do to, or careers are ruined, and that helps O'Fallon out tremendously.
