This happened to me. I used to be very passive and was also very smiley, and I would frequently get compliments on my smile. After going through and working through some trauma, however, my face hardened, and I now get told often that I always look very serious and even like I'm angry a lot of the time. The truth is that I'm not "angry," but I do understand the world a lot better than I used to, the evil that exists in it, and I am much more ready to take it on if necessary. I am constantly judging and ready to be "severe" if necessary, but I am also gentle and kind most of the time.

I know from experience that without the dream(or the impossible hope of it coming true) you are nothing. I think I softened my face and STOPPED my aging dead in its tracks by smiling and being optimistic and hopeful and looking into people for their good and not their flaws and complimenting them on it. I personally believe that NOBODY has EVER been hurt by a compliment! Please share that fact if you agree please. I wish I woulda been......,(OBEDIENT!?!/=? UNQUESTIONINGLY OBEDIENT!?) When I was young nepotism was a bad thing. Now it is so common and not just in getting a job but moving up in said job. Also, “networking” is just another way of saying you take the boss out for a beer after work or go golfing with them on the weekend. Your work is the least of their worries. Do adequate work is fine, those that are working hard or doing exemplary work just get more work while the guy buying a round got the promotion and more money. This is happening in everything and we wonder why people don’t do their job or do below average work? This is part of the reason.

I mean it’s university, that is a high price - it’s probably somewhere 200-500 $ a credit hour and most classes are 3 credits so that’s 600-1500 for 3 hours in class à week for 15 weeks, I would say that’s a pretty steep price. Save the most expensive locations in the US, that’s pretty much the range for rent per month. Basically if you can afford to pay rent 7 times in one month every month you can afford to go to college. I’ve no idea what a traveling lecture costs but I imagine that it’s just for a day and probably cheaper though possibly not.

@Russ Jamison i used to hide i was miserable. I did it for many years. I did it so well i thought it was my normal self. After fooling even myself i realized i was hiding it from others. The things i disliked, that stressed me out or what would make me "be accepted". It eventually caught up. I realized it was a lie i was tellinng myself. That that's how "i really am". But why was i miserable all the time? It was an act to satisfy others. Those close around me. I was "satisfying" them but in reality they themselves weren't happy with themselves. It made me miserable.
Id say ppl should acknowledge what is making them miserable. And if it is. Change it. Its normal to be upset once in a while. But learned behavior becomes habit. And its harder to break a bad habit than to form a new (good) one.
So, people should acknowledge. GRIEF. Work to solve. LET GO. Overcome. And continue. Let the hurt go like a little paper boat in a pond. it doesnt meant it didnt happen. Just that it no longer defines you

And the "parents" these days are enabling that shit everyday. There's a very deliberate and relevant reason why I used quotation marks then.

John ch. 3 verse 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Part of integration is uncovering your shadow IF it will help you to evolve. The shadow remains with you like a potentially protective cloak. Hyper-masculinity often betrays insecurity and fear of being open, close and vulnerable.

I think this lecture illustrates Peterson's fundamental philosophical bent more than anything else he's done. For him Mufasa is the height of psychological development, the fully worldly, lower self-integrated man. This is why, although he talks about religion a lot, he is not a religious/spiritual thinker. From the religious perspective, this worldly character still represents a lower level of development. For Buddhism or Christianity, the highest level of development is when the merely worldly is transcended, and the hardened face becomes one of softness and light. This is not a passive softness but an active one, and no amount of worldly status will lead one to it. But for a Nietzschean like Peterson, that kind of personality would represent a denial of life and absolute decadence.

@@MrCmon113 That you think Peterson is openly atheist is a testament to how little you know about his thinking. He is openly not atheist, though won't go so far as to say he believes in God, not because he doesn't but that his understanding of God is so different to what most people mean by God. A truly religious person wouldn't say he or she believes in God because that underplays the importance of God, as if he/she can ever be the object of our thoughts. The life of a seeker means constant doubt but constant openness to the possibility of God.

I lost my grandma, aunt and mother all within a 9 month period as well as having a child for the first time. I could see a markable difference in my face and personality after that very hard year. People always assume I’m mad and say that I seem unapproachable. Even I can tell that I seem that way. I don’t know how to change that.

Please don't be so hard on yourself. You've been through a lot of pain with the number of losses in a very short period of time and that would take its toll on anyone. It shows that you loved them very much and miss them dearly, which means that they meant a lot to you.
It's only natural that those experiences would affect you in some negative ways but it may also have some positive affects, too. It may make you a better mother, one who shows more patience and love for your child.
You've been blessed with a child and you can teach him/her all of the good and positive things that you learned from your grandma, aunt and mother.

Why is Peterson speaking about Freud so much? Freud believed that men secretly wanted to screw their mothers. Peterson does NOT know anything beyond what he's read in books and has seen in SOME cases, he is so wrong about so many things, AND he really has flip flopped on things after being face to face with reality. That MAY be a good thing as he is MAYBE learning that you can't label people because of what a small percentage of people in that persons "group" have done or thought.
And, IF anyone wishes to comment to make and put me down, simply because I have said a negative about Peterson, people can be right and wrong, NOBODY is right all the time, and, IF you are an intelligent person, you NEVER stop learning and growing.

Theres some great books from the 90's for men from Iron John to king/warrior/magician and lover, but I have to say the key is being balanced and so its hard to do that.learning about woman is just as important because they will destroy you if you are more one then the other. If your too kind and understanding they wont respect you and if your too macho then it leads to attracting scared abused woman who are looking for protection. You wont be able to protect them from every other woman or every other un-evolved man/boy and so she will blame you and take it out on you because your her punching bag. Im older and the worst thing that ruins lives is when the fairy tale ends and when a woman has nothing to busy herself and is all alone they go crazy.Men need to figure themselves out first, find balance, take a martial art, stop putting up with stupid behavior from their pals and get into nature.two half people dont make a whole. Two secure and cooperative people can have a relationship.Im very interested in these things and have 50 years of being a pretty hardcore fella so if any young men would like to start a JP inspired empowering men movement for the world.message me

The main existential hurdle that made me more serious and world-weary was realizing the extreme suffering that people (particularly children) can be made to endure. Whether through a harsh environment, disease/injury, or more notably abuse. There is no easy way to see the good in things when you try to digest the injustice and terror that innocent kids go through at the hands of evil adults, or just by random chance

I was sitting on a bench reading a book when a wiry, short faux-hippy wide-boy bloke came up to me and started talking. All I wanted was to be left alone to read. So I said: "I don't have any money to give you, and even if I had, I wouldn't." He got really angry. Stood up and insulted me. I told him not to be so boring. He didn't like that. Aggressive cool types cannot stand to thiink that someone might find them boring. It's the ultimate insult. So I got up and walked off, thinking about going back to my stifling flat. I got a clip on the back of my head for my pains. I turned round and he suddenly realised I was taller and broader than he was. I put on my nastiest face (my wife tells me it's very aggressive and worrying) and said: "Try that again and you'll see." He promptly turned around and walked off. From that time on I decided to go around town with a watered down version of my aggressive face on, rather than my usual slightly dreamy, smiley face, which had sparked a number of similar incidents with a few smart, streetwise punks over the years. Hardly been bothered since by anyone. Only problem is, the face stuck, soured my character (that might have happened anyway) and kept some interesting people away. Small price to pay, I suppose

As you've said, it probably cost you some interesting and enjoyable relationships by showing the half scowling face so often. People need to chill.

    • @susancarter3864
      @susancarter3864 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Doug Overhoff , yeah it’s sad, a lot of people mistake kindness for weakness. That is what took the smile off. I used to smile at every one until some men thought I liked them and wanted them just cause I smiled at them. And followed me all around the store and one tried to get in my car, just cause I smiled. And my single alcoholic neighbor thought I wanted him just cause I smiled at him. And he started putting down my husband and coming to my house drunk when my husband wasn’t home asking me for favors, I stopped smiling at him, he gets the don’t mess with me look now. It’s a shame, but my philosophy now is YOU CANT BE NICE TO IDIOTS. Cause they think you are easy prey. Now I just smile at children and old ladies, family and friends. I do not wear my heart on my sleeve anymore, cause of all the users and abusers. I GUARD IT. I know what the good book says about people’s hearts waxing cold cause of all the iniquity, I still have love, but not for the wicked. I will not do them any harm and will not allow them to use me and abuse me.

The greater part of their mind elsewhere. Sometimes easily bruised, but can also be so absorbed in their subject, as tobe insensitive to the thinly veiled insult, or to the emotional needs of others. Perhaps all of these but lunacy, or a tendency toward it, rarely. Eccentricity ? To varying degrees yes. But isn't that to be expected in an individual whose sheer power of intellect sets them apart from the rest of us. Eccentricity merely places them further from the median. It is not lunacy.

Sorry Jordan, you are wrong: when one meets a person who is very toxic (my ex had all the characteristics of a narcissist), they absolutely have their "game face on" and will "perform". Unless you put them in uncomfortable, unfamiliar situations (like getting lost on a trip, neither of you know where you are, you are camping and everything goes wrong) or the person has to interact with strangers at various social sittings (family get-togethers, weddings, birthday celebrations, work buddies) you won't REALLY know how controlling they are (especially of YOU); you won't know how they avoid being in situations where their "mask" comes off. From my experience, toxic people hide who they are VERY well in most circumstances: but NOT when the pressure is on and people are looking at them, observing their reactions, their attitudes. Bottom line: put the pressure on any way you can think of to bring out who is really underneath the smile. Don't take it easy on them, thinking, "Oh, they just want to be with me. How sweet." It is NOT sweet to close one's self away from normal social gatherings in your "love nest" -- you NEED other people noticing, conversing with this person you are interested in, and giving you their feedback.

If anything, the kind of "hardened face" that Petersen is talking about ks more characteristic of the latter, more wise indovidual being described in that particular proverb. If you don't understand how words are being used differently, you really shouldn't be using the King James, a translation infamous for using generally outdated language that isn't in the common vernacular.
