It happens naturally from what you have been putting in your subconscious. This is how I've been writing for years. I'm just so elated to know someone else does the same thing. Lyrics only tell a story while melody express a feeling and a vibe. Love it.

I think the most important lesson you can take from this is that even experienced people won't know where their creative projects will go. You learn as you go and your work will improve over time if you push through the difficult challenges.

13:00 This is super important - creating different "pockets" for each section. Rythm-wise like Ryan says where you start - but also where you end (his chorus idea and his verse idea ends the same way which is not optimal). Also the internal rythm pattern (e.g focus on straight, dotted or triplets etc) create different pockets. Also making sure the melodies have their own pockets and don't revolve around the same notes, but Ryan already does this instinctually.

You write for everyone so I’m sure there are days you’re unsure what will pop out. I really loved you on Songland. It was great to hear your process. I know getting a song out doesn’t work like it used go which is great for all this artists with beautiful music that can just offer it up without “the industry” to be TPTB. BUT, I really miss the variety in music so much. Glad you haven’t stopped making your music.

For everyone who is struggling: the true talent in this is that this guy probably plays, sings, hums and creates melodies from a young age continiously, all his life... After so many hours of just writing and composing and creating, you eventually get good at it! It will flow out of you, it will come naturally. I have the same with piano, and it helps me write good songs at lightning speed. We sometimes have singers or rappers in the studio, and when recording/writing, you just feel that these guy have the same talent as in this video... it just clicks....thanks Ryan to show this amazing work flow!

Thanks for sharing this. Ryan is the bomb. It’s not the specific substance of what he showed- it’s the method.
Play around, then edit. Melodies are like friends- you spend time hanging out, and good conversation can arise.
Sit around singing melodies- the ones you make friends with stick around, and they introduce you to their friends- and that’s when it gets interesting!
Another friend gave me this :
    ART= always rolling tape
What Ryan is doing is making friends with melodies, but tracking everything. Then edit!!
Part of what makes Ryan stellar is that he’s not just scatting melodies, he’s also dribbling lyrics.
    Good editing= genius!

I think something that’s stood out to me about his process is by having the melodies be easily singable to a lot of people like he stated, makes it easier to understand where the kind of guide the peaks of the song. What I mean by this is like the verse kinda stays in a similar range but as he gets to the pre chorus and chorus, there is more variety in his range and in the complexity it may have. It’s a good composing technique allowing the song to build and have a flow moving the line up and down instead of having the melodic ideas stay stagnant the whole time which seems to be a problem for some people from what I’ve noticed over time.
I just think it’s funny how he said he can’t explain how he comes up with the melodies but when you actually think about how each section flows together and how to build up the song over time, that can be helpful in making these great melodies he has.
Keeping it singable, having the melody always leading forward to the main section, adding more variety at the chorus, keep it more stagnant or in the same range at the verse, using melodic repetition in the verse, etc.
Hope this helps someone if they were curious and didn’t know what’s going on lol. That’s my understanding of what he’s doing even tho he said he couldn’t really explain it.

Many people commenting about how this instantly jammed song melodic ideas sounding like songs from other artists should understand that he is showing how a songwriter can derive idea for a melody from an exercise such as this.
This is a tutorial for heaven's sake 😊.
He is showing one of a work flow to get the songwriting process going on and not bad that he is slamming some nice hooks and melodies in the process.
Really appreciate 👏 for the video.

Question for Ryan (I hope he sees this):

Like Any Language Music Is also a language with 7 notes (in a song). There can be same notes put together at various instances by different artists. Just it should not sound exact copy of something. For E.g in English Language The Word John can be used by many people to name themselves. There is not a single John in this world. There are so many people. with same name. So if you are having a similar notation in a song for a bar say (Cm, A, G, F) its not an issue.

Is it a sad love song or a happy song knowing the singer has moved on?

Ryan Tedder is such an Inspiration ♥

That's the thing with song writing, especially pop songs....as Ryan said in another interview.... songs are produced and uploaded onto Spotify so often nowadays...so it wouldn't surprise me and shouldn't surprise anyone that hooks, melodies, chord progressions, etc. all sound unoriginal.
I.E. Go listen to Jonas Brothers - Sucker and One Republic - I Ain't Worried
JarredJermaine is a good reference if anyone wants to see comparisons.
    EDIT:
I'm not trying to bas or discredit Ryan...I'm a fan of their band. Just saying...

I had no doubt that Ryan is a genius in composing a music. But yeah i knew that his music now more pop and just read the comments, someone said it sounds like jason mraz im yours, some people said it sounds maroon 5 girls like you, whatever, i think that's what happen in pop genre, the sounds hear so familiar (what a messy engrish)
Tapi buktinya orang-orang jadi tau OneRepublic karena lagu-lagunya sekarang berjenis pop dengan melodi yang familiar kayak gini. Ngaku deh ya kan? Sebagai penggemar sejak album "Dreaming Out Loud", jujur aku kangen banget OneRepublic dengan sentuhan orkestra kayak "All The Right Move", dan pop-rock-ballad kayak "Stop & Stare", "Someone To Save You", "Mercy".
