Wow. Alaska had just barely become a state. Daly says "You studied in this country even though you practice in Anchorage . . ." I was alive back then, but I wasn't aware of the concept of states until there were 50 of them.
well, most European countries recognize it as legitimate medical practice as do many American insurance companies and if you've ever had a good chiropractor, you'd recognize the efficacy.
At the end, Mr. Daly said "You studied in this country, even though your practicing in Anchorage". It's funny because that was true at the time this episode was filmed in the early/mid 1950s, since Alaska only joined the US in 1959!
Not exactly. Alaska didn't become a STATE until 1959, but it was a US territory since it was purchased from Russia in 1867. So yes, the question is weird at best or inaccurate at worst.
Maybe it was the effect from having flown for the better part of 2 days to make it to New York for a WHAT'S MY LINE appearance, but Norma Godfrey seems terrified from start to finish here. But she did, indeed, stump the panel - and she IS, indeed, a very beautiful and classy lady.
"You studied in this country even though you're practising in Anchorage." What an odd thing to say. Daly also refers to Alaska as "that new state of ours'. So in effect he's saying how ironic that an American chiropractor practising in the United States studied in the United States.
Mrs Godfrey had to have had a conference in NY or nearby. You would not come on What's My Line from Alaska on a long flight like that. You never know though! The money they got was not a huge amt even for those times.
Oh you have no idea how her husband, Dr. Keith Godfrey and Dr. Norma Godfrey did as chiropractors in Anchorage in the 1960s. They had an indoor pool in their house.
I thought that, too, Karin. Pretty naughty for those days. Funny stuff. I wasn't thinking tipsy, but medicated or tired. It's amazing how both she and Dorothy can still manage great questions and throw out funny quips even when they seem to be in a slightly altered state.
Most real doctors (4 years medical school) don't look kindly on chiropractors. so it is very understood why no one would even go in that direction of thought.
The most surprising thing about this 'episode' is the absence of Cerf's usual drooling reference to an attractive female's beauty. She's not bad. Among my Top 5 - not including "Celebrity" guests. Please don't call me a sex maniac...
If you're thinking what I'm thinking then yes, it was extremely racy and I almost fell out of my chair in laughter because I was shocked. Oh Arlene :')
Chiropractors don't hold medical degrees, so they aren't medical doctors. They do have extensive training in chiropractic care and are licensed practitioners.
What did I miss? At 6:03 Richard Boone asked the guest if her practice was principally in a clinic or a hospital, and she said yes, but then Dorothy asked if she worked in a clinic, and Mrs. Godfrey said no. The answer surprised Dorothy, as it did me.
Did Arlene really say, and mean, what I think she did?? Very racy for those days, no? She does indeed seem rather tipsy,or something, in this clip. Got to love Bennetts dentistry experiences though, and Dorothy's quickest NO I can ever remember seeing.
Dorothy unfairly lost her turn. She asked, literally, "You work in a hospital?" and was given a "no" and loss of her turn. If she had asked, "Do you work in a hospital?" this would have been appropriate. But clearly, her intent was to ask John "Has it been established that Dr. Godfied works in a hospital?" Such a question to clarify the current knowledge status, under the rules, should not result in a loss of turn. John screwed up.
Wrong. What set this up bad for Dorothy was the question asked before that went, "Can you do this in a clinic or hospital?" Dorothy then assumed she worked in a hospital and asked as such. The answer is no.
So you think a man who is real chummy with all his globalist Jew friends and who gave the hand of his daughter to a globalist Jew banker is a nazi? Nazi stands for National Socialist in German. Na Zi. Not neocon globalist. The two are exact opposites. The closet America ever had to a national socialist government was FDR. He was both a nationalist and a socialist.
The catcalls and whistles from the audience are hilarious.
Different time, huh !?
Arlene was so beautiful when she looked at the camera then smiled. 😊
Bennett's question "Can we rule out dentistry?" was asked so straight-faced it had me falling on the floor XD
She was my Mother-in-law. Died at age 93.
Beautiful woman. She lived a long life.
This woman is so elegant - she breaks my heart...

Another GREAT clip! Thank you for posting! I love watching these wonderful What's My Line clips!
Too bad it turned out the show was rigged.
@@justafanintexas7913 Never heard that?

2:41 - Boone being called "Miss Boone" -- great moment.

She looked pretty and rested
LOL, her "Excuse me, Bennett," sounds more like, "Shut the f up!"
This lady was beautiful.
"Excuse me, Bennett" at 3:36 is a very, very polite way of saying "Hey - it's my turn, the camera's on me, you be quiet."
"You studied in this country even though you're practising in Anchorage." What an odd thing to say. Daly also refers to Alaska as "that new state of ours'. So in effect he's saying how ironic that an American chiropractor practising in the United States studied in the United States.
wmlfan9 Alaska became a state in 1959. WML started in 1950.

Maybe they were going on vacation to visit the East Coast
Awww. Bennett is so cute.
Arlene's specialty was the well phrased double entendre. She may have been just slightly off her game that night, but not necessarily intoxicated.
Arlene must have been drunk to have married Martin Gabel.
Arlene must have been drunk when she married Gabel.
Lots of fun. Thanks very much.
I believer that segment is 'Mice researcher'.
I thought that, too, Karin. Pretty naughty for those days. Funny stuff.
I wasn't thinking tipsy, but medicated or tired. It's amazing how both she and Dorothy can still manage great questions and throw out funny quips even when they seem to be in a slightly altered state.
Arlene looks slightly medicated.
Most real doctors (4 years medical school) don't look kindly on chiropractors. so it is very understood why no one would even go in that direction of thought.
Arlene Francis / Bennet Cerf - Brilliant!
The most surprising thing about this 'episode' is the absence of Cerf's usual drooling reference to an attractive female's beauty. She's not bad. Among my Top 5 - not including "Celebrity" guests. Please don't call me a sex maniac...
There was. Dental Assistant in a 1959 episode that was a stunning blonde. She came out wearing a tiara. Bennett did comment on her attractiveness
If you're thinking what I'm thinking then yes, it was extremely racy and I almost fell out of my chair in laughter because I was shocked. Oh Arlene :')

OMG 3:36: Dorothy's got sass! "Excuse me, Bennett"...."OK."
@SOLE2SOUL considering how scary live TV could be, I am surprised more people didn't get drunk before performances.
swell.!!!! Lol funny Arlene
Wow...Arlene's ready for bed :O
I'd of loved to have gone with her.
@EDH1712 Agree it never diminished their brain power.
Actually, Dorothy asked whether she worked in a hospital.
What did I miss? At 6:03 Richard Boone asked the guest if her practice was principally in a clinic or a hospital, and she said yes, but then Dorothy asked if she worked in a clinic, and Mrs. Godfrey said no. The answer surprised Dorothy, as it did me.
Karlsson, she said yes to working in a hospital or clinic . DOROTHY ASKED IF IT WAS WORK PERFORMED IN A HOSPITAL. THEREFORE SHE GOT A NO ANSWER.
That was about research mice.
lots of dynamics going on in this clip. but the most obvious is that the panel and John all seem quite tired.
I guess the concept of sexual harassment didn't exist back then
sweiland75 or Bennett was just trying to be silly, in that nobody has teeth below the waist.
IT didn't exist.
brainwashed SJWs did not exist back then.
@Marckymarc71 Agreed very much or may have been crying too.
LOL Thank you!
Funny he asked her is she studied in America since Alaska was not a state yet
She got her Doctor of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. There are no chiropractic colleges in Alaska.
Shame on you Ahlene
damnnn... 3:36 dorothy is quite the snippy ice bitch..
Was Jeanne Crain the mystery guest on this episode of WHAT'S MY LINE?
Did Arlene really say, and mean, what I think she did?? Very racy for those days, no? She does indeed seem rather tipsy,or something, in this clip.
Got to love Bennetts dentistry experiences though, and Dorothy's quickest NO I can ever remember seeing.
Holy crap!!! I live in Iowan and I live about an hour away from Davenport. YEAH!!!
Or at least a "Zip it".
@Marckymarc71 I agree i thought thaat too.
My Chiropractor does not look like that?! He has less hair on top and more on the face!
Poor thing; she looks really nervous.
She does but she does laugh at the .."wandering around" comment. And a few others.
She does genuinely laugh a few times though.
She can come to my joint anytime.
What does Bennet say at 6:50? Dedis...???
Dentistry
Wish someonw would bite that loud mouth Bennett.
Dentistry

How they phrase their question counts.
LOL. (BTW, you mean Dorothy, not Arlene.)
I could do without the wolf whistles
Does Norma not know how to write a capital 'G' in cursive?! Sheesh. :)
Chiropractors are quacks. The 'science of chiropractory' was invented by a greengrocer in Ohio.
poetcomic1 - They are now recognized by the AMA. Makes you feel real smart now, doesn't it?
The largest neurosurgery office in our town employs two Chiropractors now
You sure are living in the past.
"chiropractor". As long as _actual_ Nazis are in the White House, I assume you're all _also_ okay with Grammar Nazis making a comeback.
Idiot...
Obama is the fascist; HIM and his racist black criminal gang.
