People are talking about "height" when they should be talking "size" as in size of the frame. Mark Hunt was also "short" but build like freight train and KOed Struve, who was feet taller than him.
Hendricks is for example "short" for middleweight, but also has heavy frame.
On the other hand Adesanya would get murdered in heavyweight division despite being like 6 foot 3 inches.

It depends if you know how to utilize it correctly. A fighter like Stefan Struve who’s 7 ft tall with an 84 inch reach could be a force at HW just by picking guys apart from a distance, but he gets knocked out by shorter guys on the regular. Same with James Vick, 6’3 at lightweight/welterweight. On the other hand you have someone like Jon Jones who utilizes his physical gifts like his reach and height to big brother his opponents in the cage, and we all know how well that works for him.

In fairness, Fedor aged much worse than his taller colleagues because he relied so much on his speed and explosiveness. Mirko, at about 6’1”, had a similar problem. By 34-35, both of them were pretty much shot. Now, DC and Mark Hunt have both aged better, but they both have much better chins and in DC’s case world class wrestling. Point being, if you’re not quick enough to close range or sturdy enough to take punishment, you’re gonna have trouble against longer, rangier guys, and more as you go on and you slow up a bit.

somebodyonce toldme Great observation on DC. DC is 5’10 barefoot max. He’s most likely a 5’9 1/2- 5’9 3/4 barefoot guy though based on him being almost the exact same height as Khabib who is slightly under 5’10 barefoot. Yeah the 5’11 listing is blatantly high but there’s been worse like Midget MAC at 5’10 years ago now 5’9 when everyone knows he’s 5’8 1/2 max barefoot, or essentially every prominent featherweight and lightweight over the last decade. Then you have the legend Nate Diaz who is maybe the only 🐐 level guy in the UFC’s history with a reverse listing where he’s always been 6’1 barefoot and they usually list him at 6 feet flat. GSP also once listed at 5’11 when he’s not even 5’10 barefoot. All 3 major sports NFL, NBA and now the UFC supplanting baseball need to measure their athletes live on air before every season to make sure the public gets their genuine heights down to the 1/8 of an inch. 💯

A more recent example has been Alex Volkanovski’s matchup against Holloway, Holloway was 5 inches taller but Alex was able to get inside and keep things where he wanted it to be with relative ease.

In my opinion, usually height advantage also leads to reach advantage. And while I don't think it matters a whole lot, once you're looking at a fighter having 4+ inches of reach advantage. It's definetly an advantage, being able to probe and use poking strikes, to keep your opponent at range. Forcing them to push in to have the opportunity to connect. But with all that said, I think as far as advantages go, I put reach pretty low on the scale. For example I think if one fighter has 4 inches of reach, but no real wrestling skills. And the other fighter with the 4 inch disadvantage has wrestling. I personally find the wrestling matters more than the reach.

I attended both a Jiu Jitsu gym as an adult. And did judo from 8-14. Never competed you're right in that. Dunno what your point is though? I'm sure you've never made a comment about science or politics without either going to school, or participating in those fields as a profession? Since, if you've not done it to your fullest you should just keep your mouth shut.
Just from a debate point. I say reach is an advantage but not a big one. Another person says reach is a big advantage. You discredit us both, what's your stance here? It doesn't matter at all never gave a fighter an edge? Or you agree with one of us but just want to be a cunt?

Yes, height can matter. If both opponents have equal reach but one is 6'3" and the other 5'6" its gonna seem like there is a reach diff because of the striking angles you have to use.
Also, it is common for taller people to have that reach advantage which can matter if used properly.
I think a good example would be Jon Jones vs Cormier. Jon had a 3 inch reach and 5 inch height advantage and he did well to keep the appropriate spacing for striking. Then in the clinch he was able to effectively use that height an reach to strike from good angles with knees and elbows.
Alexander Volkov is another good example of someone who effectively uses his height and reach advantage with technique in a division filled with sluggers.

I remember when everyone was complaining about Jon Jones' reach advantage someone on sherdog pointed out that almost every dominant champion had a significant reach advantage over their opponents even if they were viewed as non-strikers. GSP has a freakishly long reach for a smaller guy. People who are positive ape index tend to be freakishly strong regardless of reach or striking prowess.

Yeah they are more height classes however when you are a thick guy you don't want to lose too much strength. Which is why guy's like Shaun Sherk didn't fight at 135. Guy's like Max Holloway and Nate Diaz can fight at weight classes smaller than you'd expect because they are really skinny. So there are exceptions but if you are tall for the weight class you are usually skinny while if you are thick you have a reach disadvantage.

Back in the day guys at lightweight were often 5'6 or 5'8, now most of them are taller and a lot of short guys moved down. Height matters, but what really matters is knowing how to use it for your advantage.
Daniel Cormier is basically the same height as Ilir Latifi, but DC knows how to close the distance a lot better and became the heavyweight champion.
Stefan Struve is 7 feet tall and doesn't know how to fight from the outside. Meanwhile Jon Jones is a master at fighting on the outside while having the same reach, despite being shorter.
Physical attributes only matter as much as how you use them.

  • @Vikn01
    @Vikn01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

DC is an obvious example. He is shorter than almost every HW and LHW and he just steamrolls dudes...
I wrestled for 10 years and did some training in Muay Thai and BJJ, so I have SOME experience in fighting...on top of that I used to drink a lot and I am part Irish so I have been in lots of fights both sanctioned and unsanctioned...and I noticed that height has many advantages but it also has many disadvantages.
Namely, if youre taller, that can be "wasted" weight that could be muscle for that weight class. On top of that, with two equally experienced and skilled guys, USUALLY the taller guy is gonna be easier to use offense against.
There are obvious advantages too, but thats my other example.
