  • USAF Special Operations Command (AFSOC) CV-22 Ospreys and an MC-130J Commando II perform a demonstration during the Friday airshow at EAA AirVenture 2021 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The aircraft start with a low-level aerial refueling demonstration before the Ospreys come in to deploy ground forces. Once the objective has been secured, the MC-130 conducts an assault landing to retrieve the ground forces before quickly taking back off.

      So did the CV-22B at 3:12. And the Loadmaster had a bit of ramp trouble at 11:08. All in all not the best day for my fellow Boys in Blue.

      Vortex ring state, descended into own rotor wash and lost lift.

    • @matthewchapman3507
      @matthewchapman3507 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely accidental. The aircraft lost lift due to something known as "vortex ring state." I'm a fixed-wing guy myself, so I'm not the best to explain this, but from my understanding, when rotorcraft are generating lift, downwash occurs below the rotors. Downwash is basically air that has been forced beneath the rotor in a spiraling or "swirling" state. If the helicopter descends straight down into this downwash, the rotors cannot generate any lift from the already "swirling" air, so it loses all lift and will essentially start to fall out of the sky. What we saw here was the beginning stages of that, and that's why the Osprey began descending quickly and hit the runway. Had they been higher, or not corrected it as quickly as they did, this could've easily resulted in a crash. Great recovery by both pilots!

    what happens if you overshoot air refueling in a v22
    do the blades just dice the drogue's tube?
    the the blades get tangled?
    would this probably not happen because the military is more skilled than the average DCS joe?

    A couple of summers back there were a couple of these operating off of ships in the bay round my way. I couldn't see them at the time but you can hear them from miles off. Rather noisy for clandestine infiltration, I'd have thought, if there was anyone around for miles around.

    They had to land before running out of gas, no way ever can they refuel at low level because of turbulence!
