So, I think it went like this. The first season was the only, second was announced and then had it's budget cut part way through, three and four were announced and then three was taken off air halfway through, then they bought it back on air, and accelerated season 4 (one month after season three ended) and finally, gave season 4 another budget cut. F*** It was hell trying to keep up with it at the time. But the music stayed strong.

I find the reason many didn't like Korra as a character. Is because we have at one point been Korra, or at least known someone who's like her. Aang was what we considered ourselves to be and want others to strive to be, as he's ideal. Though if you actually stop and consider: are there more Korra's out there or Aangs? LOK as a series is different from ATLA, because it doesn't have a defined destination and journey from the outset. Its about watching the focal point grow, which is why I consider Korra to be this eras Zuko. In how she has to figure a way to her rightful path.

LOK gets a bad rep mainly for things that are more or less out of the creators control (I won't say what for fear of spoiling). All I'll say is for this series they wanted to take it in a different direction and where crippled by a lot studio shenanigans getting in the way. So try to keep an open mind about it is all I'm saying. :)

It's true that a big reason for LOK's shortcommings is down to things out of the creators hands, but sadly that doesn't mean the shortcommings are not there and that people can't critisize this show for it. Sure, we shouldn't just critisize the writers but we can critisize the show as a whole

@@samndukwe6127 I always looked at it as expanding upon the known lore. Basically, what we learned about... the 'revisions' in question, was what THEY knew at the time of ATLA. It's not far-fetched to think that an Avatar long ago had something happen to them that severed their connection with their previous Avatars. And, over the years, that event, and the collective world's knowledge(essentially) of everything preceeding it, were forgotten over the years. Without getting into specifics, I always viewed the revisions in question to be more of an expanse on the lore rather than a rewriting.

      - in fact, very little of the bending seems to require forms anymore
      - nearly everyone can do the advanced forms of bending even tho only 70 years have passed since the _millenia_ of history and learning from the original series
      - you no longer need to be blind to perceive the impurities in the metal that toph bent
      - you no longer need to be taught bending at all, cos apparently korra and zaheer just kind of learned it in some offscreen way, korra even as a toddler
      - you no longer need to have any conscious awareness of rules or procedures because the series constantly uses them as nothing but a road-block to korra's learning (this being an almost exact opposite of the original)

The Benders vs nonbenders thing is actually pretty interesting. It's due to both the 100 year war (wherein an homicidal bender family almost took over the world, and an all-bender organization brainwashed a whole nation-state including it's king), and the technological revolution brought with the war giving nonbenders the ability to do things previously only benders could do.
Benders were both less trusted following the war, and less needed. But they were still in charge of most institutions and governments, so that made for some tension.

For reference, there are a few things that bother people about LoK. The big one being that it was unfortunately a botched production, they wrote it for one season and then were told last minute that they had to do a whole show, so basically the whole second season was shoehorned in at the last second.
There were also barriers to the creative process, they wanted each avatar to feel unique so they went out of their way to do as much differently for Korra as they possibly could. While that sounds like a noble pursuit, the reality is that ATLA was a masterclass in writing, voice acting, sound design, art direction, character development... really just every aspect of production, and as a result, LoK felt lacking in many of those departments overall.
They also took pretty bold liberties with the character of Korra herself, but thats a whole other and far more subjective conversation.
Overall, theres a lot to love as well as things to nitpick. Hopefully you guys enjoy the ride

So when Korra first premiered, everybody was basically annoyed when Ikki cock-blocked us from that story. XD
If you are getting into the comics, as some of your followers might be suggesting to you, the order of the comics that takes place directly after A:TLA is; The Promise, The Search, The Rift Smoke & Shadow, North & South, and the recently published Imbalance comics.

People have always said it's to unrealistic that they advanced so much in machinery/technology. But even in ATLA they had warballoons, tanks, airships, submarines, the giant drill etc. It's about 70 years later so it makes sense. I mean look at how our world was 70 years ago vs now.

Season 1 started great but then falls apart a bit midway thru. Season 3 is great but they made the villains way too OP just for awe factor when they should've instead just developed the characters better (Zaheer was perfect tho). Season 2 has highs and lows as you mentioned, though more lows if we're being honest. And S4 was good but clearly rushed, since it was in fact actually rushed.

This is gonna be controversial but I actually love this show more than Avatar.
As much as I love Aang and his story I felt more connected to Korra and she is now one of my favorite female protagonists in any form of media. Literally the first thing we hear her say is “I’m the Avatar now, you gotta deal with it!” She is almost like a fusion of Goku, Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn, and Ahsoka, Rey and Luke from Star Wars. Starting off as a talented, confident but naive girl wanting to run into danger and stop the villains by fighting them head on, then learning from her mistakes and growing from a girl to a woman.
And the bold step of takings the setting of the show from ancient Asian times to something like the early 40’s. What other shows would take that much of a risk?!?!

The series is confirmed to take place 70 YEARS after The Last Airbender, and Korra is 17 when she comes to Republic City in Episode 1. In the same episode, Tenzin is 51 when we meet him. So that makes Katarra 84ish when we see her in Episode 1, while during the same time Toph would be around 82/83, and Zuko about 86 or 87, depending on their exact birth dates. It also means Aang died 17 years ago when he was 65 or 66 (and when Tenzin was 34), which I assume means he died in battle or while saving someone.

When Tenzin, Pema, and their children arrive in the Southern Water Tribe, Jinora and Ikki dismount their bison via an airbending technique known as the air scooter, a move invented by their paternal grandfather, Avatar Aang.
At the end of the episode, Jinora and Ikki come gliding in using traditional Air Nomad gliders.
The way Katara discovered Korra leaving the Southern Water Tribe is similar to the way Kanna discovered Katara and Sokka leaving in the second episode of the original series. In both cases, a young person is leaving, somehow affecting the Avatar, and the elder lets them go.
When Korra arrives in Republic City and sees the great statue of Avatar Aang for the first time, she stares at it just like Aang stared at the statue of Avatar Roku at the Southern Air Temple.
A schematic for a mecha tank can be seen on the wall during the Lieutenant's conversation with Amon at the end of the episode.
Jinora refers to Katara by the name "Gran Gran", which is the term that Sokka and Katara used to refer to Kanna.
When talking to Katara, Jinora asks what happened to Zuko's mother.

Originally the writers only planned one season and wanted LoK to be kind of a mini epilogue series that concludes the main story. They were forced to come up with new seasons after fans demanded more. This is why season 2-4 felt a bit uninspired and lazily written sometimes. In my opinion they should've ended it after the first season.

Here's a spoiler-free explanation of why TLoK got such mixed reactions from the fanbase:
The plot/characters are simply not as tightly written as in ATLA, but it's not really the fault of the writers. Originally, Nickelodeon only gave the showrunners a *single* season to start off with; as a result, all the plot and character development wraps up pretty neatly at the end.
So then Nickelodeon gave them a *second* season. This put the writers in the position of having to scramble to "roll back" a lot of character developments and it was pretty jarring when compared against the unassailable near-perfection of ATLA pacing. At the end, they wrap up this new "final" season, and everything is fine.
Then Nickelodeon gives them two *more* seasons, so they have to have to scramble *again*. Thankfully, these final two seasons are closer to the original, since they actually got them both at once.
Nickelodeon tried to fuck them over again, though, since they switched the show to streaming-only *mid-season*, without telling anyone in advance.
