    Glad I found this video. New skink owners and I was starting to get concerned that our bluey was staying in her hide too much and not getting the light. I see that I was wrong to worry, and she can bask as desired. Thank you!!

      Yeah even for a 16-18in lizard it’s still too small. I have a 17in eastern and he does better in a 4ft viv. I also have a baby in a 3ft tank but he’s getting the same size viv after upgrading my massive 22in boy in a 4x2x2ft viv.

    Great video as always. My million $ question is, so in your experience, a blue tongue skink can thrive just as well in a 40 gallon tank, as a 55 gallon tank? You don't notice any extra stress, or anything as a result? As you said, there are many opinions, and some people will crap all over you and call you terrible things if using a 40 gallon. I have an exo terra 40 gallon that is 36x18x12. Was thinking of getting a northern blue tongue, but want to make sure this truly is a decent size. In a year or so I could upgrade to the Thrive eco PVC tank that is 46x18x18.

    My little buddy is in a 39"x18.5"x19"
    Problem is... my "little buddy" is now a monstrously large indo Blue tongue skink. Hes about 27" long.
    I think hes due for a upgrade in the near future, I'm thinking 60x24x24
    Is current tank uses a 8x18 undertank heater with thermostat on the warm side.
    A LED light panel + UVB fixture combo that's 24" long for good lighting and UVB/UVA.
    I found my skink does NOT bask. He just wont do it. However he does love his Heat rock. (I've tried floodlights and other solar heat lamps... he wont do it)
    And the to warm the general airspace now, a 60w Ceramic heater

I'll only have a 40 G and I'm wondering what kind of precautions I'll need to take with a baby, should that be what I end up with. I'm gathering info from all over and would love your input! Hello. I am from the place where these reptiles are from, which is one of the reasons we are choosing them. We are first timers setting up. I am wondering if because they are in their natural environment, how much heat is necessary? Also, what sort of temperature do you aim for, for brumation and what times of the year (QLD, Aus). Thank you kindly

    Hi, really helpful video thanks! Also does the basking area need to be flat? Would a large piece of corkbark work as a basking area?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would say mostly flat so they can get an even heat transfer. Cork can work but a rock is better.

    I just found your channel and am absolutely in love with the scientific approach.
    I want to upgrade my skink as I'm upgrading one of my other critters. My northern would be going from a 36×18×18 glass enclosure to a 48×24×12 pvc enclosure (keeping humidity in a glass enclosure has been difficult).
    So the question(s) I have are, is 12" too short for a blue tongue? Ive heard "under 18" is best because of back kinks, but I watched your basics video where you had mentioned a 24" high.
    I'd be using a radient heat pannel inside the cage, and I was worried about my skink moving hides and possibly knocking around the UVB if its fixated inside the tank aswell, are there any issues with that I should be aware of?
    Thanks for your time!

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      12” does work but taller is also an option. I have used both with UV with success

No heat, AC available but rarely used and no direct sunlight. Any concerns about natural humidity levels? Do I need 2 heat sources?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You’ll need to be certain the temps are attainable. If they aren’t then you need to adjust with artificial heat, cooling, etc.

    does anyone know what's the exact PAR38 halogen floodlight that he uses? I'm having trouble finding one that is exactly 85w on amazon or on his kit... or can it have a range listed that includes 85w? I just want to make sure that I get the right one for my new skink!

    • @storytellermistymator
      @storytellermistymator 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm having the same problem. You comment is from a year ago, but I assume that if you're able to dim an 85 to the desired intensity, you should be able to do the same with a 90w or 75w bulb -- the key is to get a dimmer. Hope this helps.

    What are the facts on the difference between plastic, wood and glass enclosures, I'm agonising over it, I've had to use all 3 and so far in terms of humidity and heat and just general decoration a plastic tub seems to do considerably better than the other 2 but I'd feel like I was being cheap to put them in plastic tubs, would manufacturing an acrylic viv be better?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PVC vivariums are optimal for indoor keeping. PVC insulates well for temps and holds humidity and is lighter in weight than wood.
      Wood is good for insulation and if sealed well holds humidity. It is heavy.
      Glass holds humidity well and is not as heavy as wood but still heavy. Glass is a poor insulator.
      Plastic tubs hold humidity well and insulate better than glass but not as good as other options. Check out www.reptilekages.com for the best option commercially available in the US.

      @alexsmithard 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReptileMountainTV thank you so much, I should clarafiy that I keep geckos rather than skinks but I am looking to get one :) I'd had issues with the glass viv in terms of heat and humidity dropping too fast all the time, id put them in temporary plastic tubs and to be honest they were fantastic in terms of functionality and now I've tried a wooden viv and the humidity just never goes down, it will dip into 60 if I leave the door open but if I close it again it rockets back up the 80s. Acrylic is very expensive. I'm in England so unfortunately I cant use kages :/ but the pvc I've just looked at is much thicker and much more affordable and I have the know how to make it so ill definitely give it a go thank you again! It's good to get information from someone using facts rather than opinion bias!

    Is it okay to keep a bts in a garage? If they have constant water? And it doesn’t get hot in their, just warm. And of course it will have a heat lamp for day and night

      If you can maintain the correct temps (as described in my caresheets) and there aren’t fumes or anything sure.

    Question so how long do you using the basking light for? The room I plan to keep the enclosure in can get down to 70.

      It will yes. But be sure to test it with a solarmeter after Four months to ensure it hasn’t lost its efficacy

      Dog food is a good staple. Mix the veg and fruit into the dog food.

    could i keep a bts in a slightly smaller encloser like a 36x18x18?

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its possible for some individuals yes. However you’ll need to be diligent about enrichment and skilled at creating thermal zones. Most keepers prefer a 4x2x2 or larger.

    I think one of those very low price clear plastic Sterilite storage containers at Walmart that are about the size of a 40-gallon breeder tank should be ideal. Zoo Med sells a great double ceramic lamp that accommodates High wattage bulbs where you can put a 100 watt ceramic heater on one side and a fluorescent or better yet if it's available LED UV bulb on the other side. Ceramic heaters are not expensive and should keep the heat and lighting cost down. Unfortunately some reptile websites do not tell you if you are receiving an Indonesian or the very best Northern blue tongue which have very different care requirements. A Company in Texas called Reptile City sent me one that was secretly a wild caught Indonesian that I did not know what it was because I set it up thinking it was a northern and not providing the high humidity so it sadly did not eat and eventually died. Not to mention getting slammed with Veterinary bills. Their response was only one word, really?

      At least one hide but one in both temp zones is best

    Hey there I have an eastern bluey. Can I mix substrates like cypress bark, critters crumble and sphagnum moss???

    • @ReptileMountainTV
      @ReptileMountainTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure why you need to but if the critter crumble you’re referring to is coconut husk then yes you can. However, Ive found that coconut products tend to mold faster than cypress or sphagnum. Keep in mind Easterns don’t need high humidity so sphagnum is not the best as its used typically for higher humidity requiring animals.

    Hey man, I have a question, I just got a new BTS indo, I put him in his tank 2 hides one with the moss and that’s the humid hide, I am following your other videos instructions of covering all 4 sides of his tank so he gets used to it for a week, he’s a room with all my pets, there are 3 dogs that reside in this room, is that fine for them to share the same space once the first week is over and I remove the 4 covers? Also I haven’t seen him leave the hide all day (first day today) since I put him in the tank, any insight would be fantastic! Love your videos @reptilemountain.tv

      You will have to gage your skinks response as it happens and adjust accordingly. No way to tell how he will react to the dogs. They will likely hide often if its wild caught and new. Could be shy for days, weeks, months, or years.

      @@ReptileMountainTV thanks for the advice🤗 I just got mine 4 days ago and he's always hiding I think it's normal since his new to his enclosure and he lives in 4×2×2 feet PVC enclosure. And the basking spot is always on 89 degrees I can't adjust it but I think it's okay and the uv tube is going in 2/3 of the enclosure. And today he actually ate today I was so thankfull that he ate. I'm not trying to hold him for the first couple weeks but I'm just happy that I got a blue tongue skink and also thank you for the care guides and tips. Its nervous getting your first reptile but it's also rewarding. thank you for everything and being an inspiration for keeping blue tongue skinks🥰, I hope you have a good day and thank you❤️❤️

    So I just purchased my first blue tongued skink a few days ago and I’m worried something might be wrong with him. the first day when we brought him home he was pretty active around his enclosure and seemed to enjoy the hides that I provided and even let him explore around my room to make him comfortable with his new environment but the next day according to my sister he didn’t come out of his log the entire day I enticed him out with a blue berry to see if he was hungry and he ate some fruit and veggies(just until I can get some wet dog food) from my hand then just went back to the inside of his log and has been sleeping for very extended periods of time with little to no exploring at all and seems almost lethargic he’s in a 40 gallon tank with dual heating lamp with one ceramic bulb for night time use He occasionally sneezes from time to time. I was told hes about 8 months old and is an Indonesian bts. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated I love the little dude and want to take expert care of him!
