Hi I want to buy a northern bts I live in the UK and can't really find a good breed could I get one shipped from USA to UK or would they not make the shipping x
casually binge watching these video's while I give my skink time to adjust to his cage... Got a young Indonesian bts four days ago, lookin' forward to bonding with my very first skink! (but not first reptile)
I’ve been checking out your videos and while I disagree about some things, I do appreciate the fact based good information and the way you’re able to disseminate good info to a wide range of folks for taking good care of BTS. Question. Where do you see the prices going with this years crop while expos may not be a happening thing for the foreseeable future and money being more scarce with folks losing their jobs and just the uncertain times?
Great question. Expos are one of the least common places for BTS to be sold, at least as far as the Australian species go. Very few quality breeders vend at expos. A vast majority of sales occur online and the animals are shipped all over the US. So expos closing won't impact the Aussie BTS market much if at all. The second part of your question, is harder to gauge. The economy will recover from this, how long it will take is a deeper question I know. We do know luxury items are (mostly) the first to be cut from spending when money it tight and skinks are luxury items. However, there are many people interested in purchasing skinks as evidenced by the number of people signing up to buy a skink from my website. In the past month during this crisis the new subscribers to the email list has increased by over 100 and puts my total at over 2,000 folks. So I can't speak for the entire community but from my little corner things are increasing if anything...
ReptileMountain.TV thanks. Yes, and the other side of things is that when folks are not doing the best, little things like hobby pursuits almost seem more important. Thanks again.
TC, im always amazed on how calm your BTS are in your hands. Im not saying mine is squirmy or wild, but yours are puppy dog tame. Mine will give an occasional hiss coming out of her enclosure. Are all your breeders cooperative leaving their enclosures? And can you give a probable way to lessen enclosure hissing?
Thanks. There are out takes full of squirmers. I usually go through my selection to pick one that is chill for the day. They each have good days and squirmy days. Consistency is key. And food bribes are helpful as well.
I live in South Australia and most of us have Easterns (eye-banded) in our backyards, at least in the hills anyway. They seem to prefer a solitary life, so you only ever see 1 at a time, but they're the best, love em.
I have really been researching looking for my first reptile, i'm from Australia so no exotic animals allowed. Thanks to your channel along with a few others I have made the decision to buy a bluey. I have a a good local pet store, not a chain to buy from and I am ready to order a custom enclosure. I am simply waiting for my my Pet application for my rental to be approved. Your information has really helped me to know about all or the enclosure, diet, supplementation and enrichment requirements. I am super excited, far better than the fish I thought I would be stuck with because I am in a small unit, at least I can handle a bluey, plus no license required in Victoria.
I'm getting my northern bts in a few days and I'm super excited. The only issue is I sleep with white noise, and my fan is very loud. Will this be an issue?
Just got a mirauke need more advice he is sub adult healthy have the uv 100 watt basking bulb and heat pad which i use for the night hope i am doing ok
Im just getting into skinks (dont plan on getting one for a while so much research to do) and this is absolutely wondefful video. Eaastern vs northern has been a rough thing for me to look into. At least this helps a bit narrow down which way i want to go. Thank you so muc.
I really like your videos and I am learning a lot! I am starting to look for having one northern myself but in Europe there are so few available.Too bad that I am not in the US, otherwise I would really love to buy one from you! Hope everything is going on well there during this difficult period of time.
I’m doing a lot of research on blue and pink tongued skinks - more recently the northern vs eastern BTS and I’m noticing a trend... the videos are all on the same channel
Can you/Do you have a video on Schneiders Skink care? I recently rescued one that was being very neglected and am not seeing much as far as how to for it.
One other thing I notice people saying is "easterns need less humidity, heat and uvb than northerns", this is not true at all, easterns can be found in most of the northerns range and deal with the exact same parameters but they can thrive in a wider range of habitats than northerns. you can treat a eastern the same as you would a northern with no ill effects at all, they are very adaptable and can thrive in most conditions, within reason that is
I agree to some extent. Easterns from the southern locals do have negative issues with higher humidity though and damp captive environments more so than Northerns. And they do benefit from a cool down at night unlike some of the Queensland Easterns. There is still a major climate difference between Melbourne and Darwin wouldn't you agree?
@@ReptileMountainTV but for easterns found in Queensland there is not much climate difference to Darwin, easterns in far north Queensland deal with conditions just as tropical as Darwin northerns. even easterns living as far south as Melbourne live in an average humidity of 55%, which is above what most would suggest. Brisbane easterns thrive in a summer humidity range of 65-70%, way over what is recommended by most keepers and in summer and spring live with hot days and hot nights, but easterns from this area also deal with humidities of 48% in winter and average night temps of 9°C, just thought I should get this out there because easterns are very versatile, even more versatile then most people believe, but once again not too sure if locales could impact the parameters that the animal needs
Hello, hope you are doing well :) Over the summer, I have been considering getting a northern blue tongue skink. I have a 70 gallon tank, and I want to do a hot side and cooler side for the tank itself. I am just wondering if this is too large of a tank for the temps to distribute the right way, and how long should my uvb light be? I am mostly a beginner, as I have only had a corn snake and leopard geckos. Thanks!
I think our BTS (Victor) might be green phase too. Also, on measurments, you said the weight for easterns is 300 - 1000grams. Just wanted to check, Victor is an eastern, we estimate his age is about 2 years, he is about 14.5 inches long and 307grams, which is on the lowest end of that scale- should we be concerned or is he perhaps still growing and there is no need to worry?
No need to worry. Those were just general sizes. Some animals are outliers whereby they maybe different than the norm but still healthy and well. I have a small male Victorian Eastern who is just inside the 300g mark as well. Really the most important part is their body mass ratio. Are they a good weight for their size? If so then great. Wonderful question!
Gday mate in your pink tongue care video you also stated you have a favorite skink. You commented that you would not tell us . so no one could mistake it as you disliking other skinks :) ... its eating me up in side. i would just love to know. i also care for some of the same reptiles you do :) . ps i hope you remember that last convo we may of had :) cheers ps i think it may not be Australian skink.
Could you answer a question for me dude, I am almost ready to be able to get my first ever lizard which will be a northern blue tongue skink. I was wondering will a light bulb that provides uvb and uva will be ok for the little dude. According to the description it provides heat, uvb and uva all in one should I trust it?
How’s it going hope all is well, I just received a bts from a friend who couldn’t care for it anymore and wanted to know if you could identify exactly what species bts it is so that I can care for it properly. Thank you in advance..
Thank you I thinking about getting a Northern BTS for my b day so I am doing a bunch of research and your channel is helping me so much keep making videos.
ReptileMountain.TV OK, that works for me. It doesn’t get below 65 or 70 at night in my reptile room. At least in the summer. But next winter I’m going to provide some heat at night. Thank you. I don’t know how I missed that detail but I will definitely fix it.
This might be a stupid question but i have and indo and an northern Australian. The Australian looks great and i bought him from a breeder but i got the indo first from a reptile shop. The indo is a healthy weight but his neck is disproportionately large, is this normal. I only noticed as my northern doesnt have this look. Thank you in advance, your vids are so helpful! 👍
Good question! Some animals get “neck jowl-like” thickness in the neck. Ive seen it mostly in obese Meraukes and Irian Jayas for some reason. I see a ton of skinks that people think are healthy weight but really are obese. Not saying yours is however its something to look for.
@@ReptileMountainTV no i agree while i had him on the home brew he did put on some weight, its the reason why i switched food. Could this be like loose skin similar to if a person lost weight? His body is quite slim now since changing food and schedule. But tbh i never thought he was obese just over weight thats why i didnt act sooner. Thanks for the reply!

I was wondering what humidity levels and what substrate you would recommend?
Humidity should be between 70-90% and the best substrate (imo) are those coconut stuff. They keep high humidity
