  • Well folks, as a final farewell and ultimate conclusion to railfanning in Northern California, I decided to head out for one last outing and revisit a great railfanning hot spot. I personally couldn’t get enough of the action at Oakland - Jack London Square three months back and thought it would be worth returning to railfan once again, this time focusing on the evening / night action as my final NorCal video. I headed down to Oakland on this December Sunday afternoon and spent time at the farmers market as well as grab food prior to railfanning. As sunset approached, I decided to repeat my methodology and start filming at the south end at the Amtrak Station near Oak St. and gradually make my way towards the parking structure, up on the pedestrian bridge near Clay St. for a comprehensive view of the evening / night action here. Jack London Square is especially unique for its street running action not too common in the U.S., but also due to its waterfront location, trackside buildings, and proximity to Amtrak’s Oakland Maintenance Facility (OMF). That combined with JLS serving as a terminus for San Joaquin and some Capitol Corridor trains, as well as the daily Coast Starlight and Union Pacific freights, make for plentiful action throughout any day. In the end, whether it is the horn echoes, street running, tons of action, or awesome crews, Oakland - Jack London Square remains as one of the more awesome places to visit !
    Train 1 : Amtrak Deadhead with F59PHI #2005 & NPCU #90218. This trainset came from the Amtrak Oakland Maintenance Facility (OMF) and will become Amtrak 718 bound for Bakersfield.
    Train 2 : Amtrak 738 with SC-44 #2106, F59PHI #2008, CabCar #6962, & #8302. Note the 11-car consist to accommodate passengers attending the last Oakland Raiders home game at the Oakland Coliseum.
    Train 3 : Amtrak 718 with NPCU #90218 & F59PHI #2005. Originally waiting for both 738 and 743 to pass through first, 718 is given clearance to depart immediately after 738 due to 738’s late arrival and to hold 743 outside of Jack London Square until after 718 leaves. Neat seeing the train articulation from this angle !
    Train 4 : Amtrak 743 with F59PHI #2015 & CabCar #6963. Nice horn action !
    Train 5 : Amtrak 715 with F59PHI #2004 & CabCar #8303. Nice, long horn action rolling through JLS ! 13:16
    Train 6 : Amtrak 742 with CabCar #8310, #8306, & F59PHI #2011. Note the standing room only from passengers attending the San Francisco 49ers game at the Santa Clara Levi Stadium. Some nice horn action from this engineer upon departure as well !
    Train 7 : Amtrak Deadhead with CabCar #8303 & F59PHI #2004. After concluding its trip from Bakersfield, the equipment and crew from 715 head for the OMF for the night. Awesome extra horn action from the engineer ! Great crew as well !
    Train 8 : Amtrak 745 with F59PHI #2003 & CabCar #8308. This Capitol Corridor train is one of the few that terminate here on weekends. This trainset will resume as 746 back to Sacramento later in the evening. Friendly conductor !
    Train 9 : Amtrak 747 with SC-44 #2107 & CabCar #8309. With the holidays approaching, I thought it would only be befitting to also include some Christmas tree shots; that being the 55' tall set up at JLS for all to see and admire !
    Train 10 : Amtrak 744 with CabCar #8312 & SC-44 #2108. 24:33
    Train 11 : Amtrak 717 with F59PHI #2007 & CabCar #6961.
    Train 12 : Amtrak 746 with CabCar #8308 & F59PHI #2003. Nice horn action !
    Train 13 : Amtrak Deadhead with CabCar #6961 & F59PHI #2007. Some nice horn action from this engineer as well !
    Train 14 : Union Pacific ZG2OA-12 with C45AH #8217, C44ACCTE #6602, SD70M #4883, & SD70AH #3096. An unexpected, nice surprise, this intermodal appears not long after the Amtrak Deadhead move. Awesome horn action and echoes as it rolls through !
    Train 15 : Amtrak 749 with P42DC #83 & CabCar #8313. Nice, extremely loud horn action from the engineer rolling into JLS ! 35:09
    Train 16 : Amtrak Deadhead with CabCar #8313 & P42DC #83. Not long after arriving at its final stop, the trainset and crew from 749 deadheads to the OMF for the night. Nice horn action again from the engineer !
    Train 17 : Amtrak 748 with CabCar #6963 & F59PHI #2015. This train is the northbound turn of 743 after arriving at San Jose earlier in the evening. Good horn action from this engineer as well rolling by !
    Train 18 : Amtrak 719 with SC-44 #2102 & NPCU #90225. Amazing from this perspective how bright the Charger headlights are ! Great, loud horn action from the engineer arriving !
    Train 19 : Amtrak 14 (Coast Starlight) with P42DC #195 & #194. With the late night settling in, the northbound Coast Starlight makes its nightly appearance into Oakland.
    Train 20 : Amtrak Deadhead with NPCU #90225 & SC-44 #2102. Immediately after Amtrak 14 departs, the trainset and crew from 719 head to the OMF for the night. With that folks, until the next opportunity, this marks the end to my NorCal railfanning series !
    Thanks for Watching !

    Excellent footage! I still remember my vist here back in 2010! Loved seeing these trains travel down the street! I wonder how many freights still operate through Jack London Square? Even when I went i felt like there was very little freight activity.

    • @BrentNguyen46
      @BrentNguyen46  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tcostello105 Thank you ! It’s definitely worth revisiting for sure ! The freight action through Jack London Square is unfortunately very limited to only a couple freights a day. Mainly some intermodals, manifests, and locals, but usually no more than 10 freights a day at best as far as I am aware of. That, combined with the recent Precision Scheduled Railroading has made predicting freights all the more difficult recently.

      The Comet Cars (as well as the Viewliner Dining and Baggage Cars) have recently been added onto the San Joaquin trains to accommodate a recently implemented minimum count of 28 axles for proper activation of crossing signals. The cars do not actually carry anyone and are isolated from the bi-level passenger section.

    • @ckildegaard

      The only answer I have is that that's how this stretch of railway was built. It used to be much more common, too.

    • @danielcarroll3358
      @danielcarroll3358 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is where the rail line was originally placed about 150 years ago. It is still here and in the street because:
      To one side is the ship channel between the cities of Oakland and Alameda.
      On the other side is the downtown of Oakland with skyscrapers and all.
      The line can't be depressed in a tunnel or trench because there are two auto tunnels that run at right angles to the tracks that connect Alameda with Oakland.
      There are long term proposals to move the passenger trains underground but it will require electrification of the lines and a tunnel under the center of Oakland. We are talking billions of $.

    Why do all the F59s have one working marker?

    • @BrentNguyen46
      @BrentNguyen46  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some actually do have two working marker lights. When Caltrans (California Department of Transportation) ordered the F59PHIs, the locomotives numbered 2001-2009 that were built in 1994 only have one marker light. (The other red light being an emergency light). The locomotives numbered 2010-2015 that were built in 2001 do however have two working marker lights in lieu of the emergency red light present on the previous F59PHIs.
