Modular Synthesizers patched like this, in a generative manner, are the closest thing of a connection "human intelligent machines" I can imagine right now.. there is an interaction going on and a sense of life brought into the machine that I can´t quite find anywhere else. Analog Voodoo effect, like Richard Devine called it. And with the nature surrounding it, it just completes the circle.. great stuff

I travel a lot because of my job and I'm trying to get used to the same... bring the synth and my camera with me and record at least a small piece :) I can't still define the feeling that comes with capturing those moments in those places, but it's definitely something to go for.

So, I was looking at the intellijel case with all the 1U utilities on top for $999, but I couldn't find the 104 with those options, just the 84. With the modules I'm planning, and also room to grow makes me think the 84 is too small.

No, not everything is entirely random. But even the things that start off as random have 'boundaries' and 'lanes' designed for them to 'automatically drive' within-that's what makes the composition; otherwise it would sound like a complete mess every time.
those are 1u utility modules. It's from intellijel.com/shop/eurorack/ the case is from there too. the two units he is using up there are mixers. Basically input in and the knob controls the 'volume' of it. He is probably using it for CV (control voltage) so he can control the power of modulation throughout the patch. forgive me, I'm really new to this too. Its a lovely piece.
Thanks, Almanacs and Tony. Yeah there’s a link in the description to ModularGrid. That shows which modules are used. And then I have patch notes on Patreon that explain most of the concepts. And Tony is mostly right here that I’m using those Quadratts as attenuators for certain signals - level control of audio and/or voltages that control other modules. It’s handy to have them up top so as to maximize space in the main part of the rack for other types of modules. I use those Quadratts for some interesting things in the Moogfest performance that happened a couple weeks after this piece was made. Search Lightbath Moogfest for the set and you’ll see me changing the pitch of some sounds and transposing it with a neat little trick that’s, again, outlined in the Moogfest set patch notes :)

Very tidy cable management. It must make turning knobs much easier. Do you tend to keep the same patch for a while or just clean it up like that when you have something good?
I tend to keep my performance case patched for a while as it eases live performance. I sort of design an instrument to facilitate a certain kind of improvisation and it takes some time to get comfortable with it, to find out how broad I can go with it. This piece is the first performance case patch iteration since a pretty major change (addition of Marbles and the 1U utilities). So yeah, the cable ties stay for a while. When I patch a more open-ended system at home, I often just leave the cables as-is to encourage experimentation and change.
In this video it was a Yeti battery about the size of a car battery that I had borrowed. In my Anywhere in Nature video I use the Polyend Anywhere with a USB battery bank.
@lightbath hey , can I ask you a few things: your music sounds beautiful, I'm only learning modular(even though I've been for a while), these type's of sequences are they running random or is it a sequencer, are you using a master clock ? I'm considering either a tempi(make noise) Or "pamelas new workout" I don't know which is a better option. I have semi- modular gear with a couple of extra modules. The marbles has clocks & looks cool but a bit confusing to me yet. What's your opinions? Thanks
Thanks. Marbles is wrangled random and the Monome is a sequence. They’re running off a master clock from Pam’s. Pam’s isn’t as performative as Tempi and the mutes are way more difficult to access in any usable way, but it can output rhythms and modulations, whereas Tempi can only output clocks. Tempi is a good choice if you want to get the new René (which I’ve been using lately) as they work together like a seamless pair. Your first question chould be ‘how do I want to create melodies?’ Do you want to work with random and have it choose the material for you (which you will then sculpt) or do you want to choose the notes yourself, like many other sequencers? Or perhaps something in between like René that’s hard to know exactly what your sequence is playing, but easy to just turn knobs and make it sound good. If you choose to start with Marbles you may not need a master clock as it has a few trigger/gate outputs and an internal clock. René, on the other hand needs a clock to run. Wishing you well on your journey. The answers to your questions are quite broad and have more to do with your understanding of how the devices work so that’s all I can really get into on this platform. If you’re looking for more guidance, I have a Patreon and I’ll be opening up more consulting and lesson tiers this winter once I reorganize them.

Sounds like you have a lot of what you need to get rolling making some music. Marbles could be a good new approach then to what you already have, but so could Pam’s or Tempi so as to free up Maths for more envelopes or complex modulation. Wishing you well on your journey.

Search Lightbath Moogfest or Lightbath Holy Fire for examples. But yeah, these more generative pieces are different. The whole point is to get out of the way. And with a 70mm lens it’s not as uncomfortable as it might look.
Haha! Yeah, the Intellijel case is better as my main performance thing because of that 1U row of utilities. It really saves space inside the rack. In fact, this video was the first I had made with the case as I had picked it up while in Portland a couple months prior (and had been busy making the first three Loom videos in that MDR case - with sliding nuts!).

The extra depth for modules (compared with my Submodular cases) and the travel bag with the pocket and thing to slide over a luggage handle makes this case really nice for flying, too. And if you use the built-in inputs/outputs and MIDI ports (and the two-position) legs you really can’t get any better for a single case. Granted, for a 12U setup the Submodular with their forthcoming spacer to connect two cases patches is pretty amazing.
Lightbath 😂 I was thinking of making a counter-video to yours, explaining the practicality of a non-sliding-nut case. I tried your way with the magnet pen, but it‘s still a hassle. Fixed screw points and Knurlies all the way, for me.
Truthfully, I like both for different reasons. Granted, I just don’t like the look of knurlies, so that’s why I don’t use them. Although I understand the practicality of them, especially when paired with threaded rails. It doesn’t get any quicker or easier than that. I think the real difference between sliding nuts and threaded rails is whether the user places the highest value on practicality or aesthetic.
It's a sort of complicated ecosystem, but the easiest approach is to find an Ansible module and connect it with a grid and use the sequencer called Kria (inside of Ansible). That's what I'm doing here. But Ansible has been discontinued and so these days it seems that Monome is encouraging users to get the module Crow and to use it to connect their Norns device to Eurorack and control Norns via a Grid. I don't prefer that approach because I like to connect my Grid directly to the modular and not have a separate Norns device. But yeah, that's where it currently stands. There's a lot of info on the Lines forum: llllllll.co but it's also a lot to sift through. Good luck.

So, in that regard, Tucson is pretty heavy. But my impression is that there doesn't appear to be a ton of events when compared with a place like LA or Portland.

Nothing seems to match LA, but Portland was pretty solid. And it’s home to some amazing musicians like Marcus Fischer.
