It's amazing how if you can speak Romanian you can understand other Romance languages. Conversely, it's not so easy for someone who speaks Spanish or Italian to understand Romanian. Romanian seems to be a kind of lingua franca of the Romance languages, or the basis is closer to vulgar Latin.

I guarantee you will understand way more of Romanian if you get rid of all the diacritics. Those are the ones that make the language harder to understand. Thats why Romanians can understand other Romance languages but they cant understand Romanian as well. Its much easier understood when written. The same problems come with French and Portuguese. They are kinda hard to understand when spoken but easier when written. As strange as Romanian may sound it still is very similar to the other ones but the diacritics make it harder.

You could understand Romanian easily because not only you spoke four other Romance languages, but you had an open mind and an ear for recognizing the different words. Sometimes it is easier looking at a written text, rather then hearing people speak fast. I know Italians that could not recognize simple sentences very similar to Italian spoken in Romanian, always considered it like a psychological barrier they have, also not used to hearing various languages, as their movies are not subtitled.

Romanian is a very beautiful language, you just need to copy the glossary of its sister languages more to be more intelligible with them, and an explanatory, analytical and profound language, many conjugations and declensions, Romanian is a profound language for real speakers, guys who love to speak for hours on end.
