    Huge update! As of June 25th (2 days after this review) Sigma has announce the 2.0 firmware update which includes:
    - ProRes RAW over HDMI
    - Blackmagic RAW over HDMI (WHAAAAT!)
    - DCI 4K over HDMI
    - More frame rate options in HD and 4K
    - And more.
    This is a huge update which will help the FP a ton. Unfortunately there is still no log profile or plans for 10bit 4:2:2 internal recording.
    Once these updates are available I’ll revisit this camera in a new video!

      Haha I came back here to tease you about posting 1 day before the new firmware came out... or maybe they listened to you and reacted super fast! 😄 p.s. the firmware is already available now. Yeah gutted to get no 10bit internal .mov with log and unfortunately they said they tried but for some technical reason could not implement log and do not believe they will be able to, very strange. I just installed and tested the 100fps HD 12bit raw and it's REALLY nice! Unfortunately no 4K50/60p though... even externally to BMD or ATOMOS recorder. Look forward to your next review of the fp 👍

    Stop whining about not having compressed RAW. Enough is enough. To add compressed RAW, the camera's processor needs to do a lot more conversion, and that drives up the HW spec, size, weight, and cost. The spec creep will kill the fp. All for what? So you save some money on external storage? A camera like this can easily last you 10 years, and right now, you can buy a 2TB external SSD for roughly $200. And it'll be even cheaper in the foreseeable future. So stop whining already. It's a part of the package, the nature of the beast.

      @DrWNoLs ปีที่แล้ว

      It's kinda funny cuz its dynamic range is actually very mediocre. It just isn't in a log format initially. 12.5 stops is among the lowest of any cinema camera. It's still very cool though and beefy data rates + great color.

    • @upclosepro
      @upclosepro ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@DrWNoLs a lot of that is marketing. CineD has tested the dynamic range of this camera vs black magic 4K/6k and it’s almost identical to 4K. I’m not sure how dynamic range compares to other cheaper cinema cams like Panasonic bgh1 or zcam but it’s pretty much on par w black magics cheapest options. Weighs half as much, has superior af w updates and it’s full frame vs micro 4/3 and super 35. Other than being a more recognized and accepted brand in production environments I don’t see huge benefit of doing black magic over sigma fp or fpl

    • @DrWNoLs
      @DrWNoLs ปีที่แล้ว

      @@upclosepro I don't know about that, 12.7 stops vs 11.8 with a signal to noise ratio of 2 on the pocket 4k vs FP makes perfect sense to me. 1 stop is a very big deal. The FP also has far less exposure tools and no log preview to my knowledge, which is a huge issue. The difference is far from marketing imo, and just a matter of practicality. Also with the pocket 4k it's more reassuring to know color space transforms will work as intended. With the FP you have to change the linear data to blackmagic design gamma, and that's not exactly the most professional option vs the company itself having it's own log (even via metadata in post, a Sigma official log would be nice).

    • @nonameexpdng
      @nonameexpdng ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DrWNoLs One way to have a Log preview is using the Atomos Ninja V, RAW signal from Sigma FP is converted in Panasonic V Log. It works great, I developed my own LUT and I always switch between the Atomos preview for monitoring the image and the internal monitoring for recording on SSD. I hope Sigma will find a way to develop some sort of Log, since they added EL Zone in the last firmware.

    Coincidentally they fixed the Sigma fp with the upcoming Firmware 2.0. They will support Dual Native ISO, external Recording in ProRes RAW or BRAW 😍, Timecode Support for the Audiofile in Cinema DNG etc. They transformed that camera from an obscurity to a really interesting option for indie filmmakers.

  • @mrjonkane
    @mrjonkane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Really good workflow a lot of fp owners are now using for cDNG clips we want to keep is converting direct from the SSD using software called SlimRaw, with lossless compression it more than halves the file size but retains full quality of the raw.

  • @dodmedia
    @dodmedia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I really enjoy the image I'm able to get out of mine, but I did indeed need to start learning Resolve to be able to make any headway with it. I did a dual fp camera interview recording... recorded for 27 minutes, ended up with a terabyte of cDNGs and it took 2 days for After Effects to process them into a ProRes file for me to edit in Premiere. So DEFINITELY Resolve is more than a recommendation. It's a must. 😅
    Totally agree with you, a LOG profile with a LUT for monitoring would be ideal, and a compressed RAW format that doesn't result in thousands of image files would also be lovely!

      Yeah man, I think it’s just a case of the wrong market.
      Nobody is asking for a point and shoot sized cinema camera. I think if Sigma would have made this camera more of a hybrid size like the BMPCC, or even focused on bringing a really affordable true cinema style camera to market, (think Kinefinity or Z cam) I think they would have faired much better.
      The most practical application for a small camera like this is mounting it on a drone. But the market that this camera is geared for isn’t going to be buying a drone without an onboard camera so that’s kind of a DOA idea as well

    RAW can never be 4:2:2 if it's stored in a mosaic format like CinemaDNG, because no chromatic sub sampling has occurred to the image. It remains 4:4:4 until after the debayer. People often confuse the bayer sensel resolutions with chromatic sub sampling, and they simply are not the same. With a mosaic RAW at the end of the demosaicing process one will have a 4:4:4 color image and at that point those colors can get chromatically average to a lower chromatic resolution like 4:2:2 or 4:2:0.

    • @papaattrams4077

      Please explain further in simple english

    • @billyoung9538
      @billyoung9538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@papaattrams4077 The sensors are made of colored "pixels" that form a pattern. The pattern is called a mosaic. The most common color mosaic pattern is the bayer pattern, and while it is stored in gray values these values are actually Red, Green and Blue information. The bayer pattern consists of 1 red "pixel", 1 blue "pixel" and 2 green "pixels." Until that pattern is converted into a physical image using a process known as demosaicing every "pixel" retains full RGB potential despite any compression. The RGB bayer pattern must always be RGB demosaiced before it can be converted to a chromatic color space like YUV (Y= luminance, U & V = chrominance) where chromatic color compression can occur. Chromatic sub sampling (4:2:2) removes 1/2 of the chromatic colors from an image, but can only be done with chromatic color when luminance has been separated from the color information. Thus because this stores the RAW Bayered information, any initial image from it will always be 4:4:4 and can not be 4:2:2.

      @billyoung9538 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@ClaudioDesideriFilms 4:4:4, 4:2:2 e 4:2:0 sono rapporti di campionamento cromatico. Sono utilizzati solo negli spazi cromatici in cui sono presenti dati di luminanza e crominanza separati per dirci quanti colori cromatici in meno ci sono rispetto alle informazioni sulla luminanza. Un pattern Bayer dei sensori è solitamente sotto forma di dati RGB e non di dati di luminanza e crominanza. Quindi l'uso dei rapporti di campionamento cromatico non può funzionare, perché non stiamo operando nello stesso spazio colore. Oltre a ciò, con i campioni RGB Bayer usano complessi algoritmi matematici demosaici per ricavare più colori, e non meno. Quindi, con un pattern del sensore Bayer finiamo sempre con l'equivalente RGB di un'immagine cromatica 4:4:4 e non avremo mai né 4:2:2 né 4:2:0 a meno che i dati del sensore RAW non siano demosaici e quindi convertiti in uno spazio cromatico.

    Cool. I had heard about the Sigma FP, both pros and cons, but not in such rich real-life detail. sounds pretty amazing and I love the dynamic range - and what you did with it. Looks absolutely cinematic. That price tag. I had no idea. I can totally see myself mount one of those along with an SSD on the side of a car and that sort of thing... external recording over USB-C is one of these game changers!
    If I'm not mistaken white balance becomes irrelevant when shooting RAW as it's really just a bit of metadata stored alongside the well... raw sensor output. So you can align it as part of your RAW processing. Might be a bit of reconciliation regarding the cumbersome menus. ;)

    9:05 More great content! May I very politely point out that there is no supported H264 profile that supports 10 bit. That codec tops out at 8 bit. The required codec for 10 bit color, H265, requires far greater CPU power for the encode, and also has an additional licensing fee. Unless the FP has a ton of extra processing power laying around, and Sigma wants to pay more per unit for the H265 license, I think the 10 bit H265 option is not feasible for them.

    The issue here is not the camera. The issue is the user. This is an all new system, new UI. Not the canon, nikon, lumix, sony UI standards we're used to and like any learning curve the process of learning can frustrate some understandably. And sigma is just getting started...
    I upgraded to the FP L with reservations of course but I was ready to deal with the learning curve. This camera is a gem. The dynamic range is insane. 9k DNG photos. 4k 12 bit DNG uncompressed data. But as artists we need what suits the project. So use what suits your needs. It could be any camera in the world.

    Yes, please, BRAW would be so great on this Camera. I bought it in November kinda speculating, that Log and something like BRAW would come per Firmware. Really risky to be honest, but i love the Idea to have a beast of a camera hat i can easilly carry around with me

    There is a *quasi* LOG with the new firmware, it's "Color Mode = OFF". Documentation is unclear, but it's legit.
    Thanks for the review!
    Biggest problem with MOV using this camera is there was previously no way to disable sharpening altogether, so the lack of AA filter caused nasty artifacts. Color Off fixed this, but it would be great to have some of the (lovely) color modes, just without the sharpening.

    Hi Caleb...learning so much from your content. I like the visual 'look' you get and I believe you shoot in LOG, but how do you get that soft, sort of dreamy look results? Is that LUT or all done via lights and in camera. Thanks and please keep up the great work!

      Totally agree. I do the same. Let’s not forget the Ext. TC in which allows you to shoot high quality off board audio. The metabones cine adapter C/Y to L is my go to: it holds the lenses well without movement on focusing. The POWRIG D-Tap battery replacement allows me to shoot for hours with mini V-Mounts. Love it.

    Cinema DNG Lossless RAW for DCI4K/30p is stated as 270MB/sec , from Blackmagic Design.
    Unless there is a different compression in Sigma's cDNG Lossless RAW , then Sigma should have like 42MB/sec less bitrate.
    Thank you for your informative video.

    then an hour later the fp L was announced!
    Lol. All good though because the pricing was already reduced and I wouldn’t want the L anyway. Don’t need autofocus, 61 MP and total loss of lowlight capability. For Cine fp original all the way.

    Figuring out the minutiae involved with picture profile settings will be the make or break for using this camera, especially professionally. There is limited online guidance (mostly on message boards) available, so it will be a matter of trial and error before finding the right one.

    You might want to explore SlimRAW for an alternative workflow. SlimRAW will take an uncompressed DNG sequence and allow one to convert into a Compressed sequence with up to 12:1 compression. The reason no one can do this in camera is because of RED's Redcode patent which doesn't allow compression of ANY mosaic based RAW format in camera with out RED being involved.

    • @TylerMcCool
      @TylerMcCool 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it makes me hope red goes out of business.. so we can all have compressed raw.. or maybe someone acquire them in the future.. a man can dream

    • @billyoung9538
      @billyoung9538 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TylerMcCool The patent will expire in, I believe, 2028; however, that is still a long way off, and honestly I think the patent should never have been issued in the first place, because all they did was extend what had already been happening with stills cameras and applied a frame rate minimum to it. This is why most still cameras can't acquire compressed raw frame sequences beyond 1 or 2 seconds at speeds above around 24fps. It's not that they couldn't, but they can't due to this patent, even though this was obviously going to happen with all cameras, and thus predictable which, again, should have made the patent invalid.

    • @TylerMcCool
      @TylerMcCool 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@billyoung9538 agreed about the validity of the patent.. Even more disappointing was the Patent Office's denial to even bring it to court from Apple's challenge to the validity of the patent (this was about 2 years ago I think).
