      In addition to cost to buy, there is a huge electrical cost…they take a lot of power to operate.

    • @JackBahh
      @JackBahh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@borysnijinski331 But if you're already running with a generator on the fuel increase would be minimal. If you were plugged into shorepower and had to pay a seperate bill then I'd agree, they'll be expensive.

    • @davedavids9619
      @davedavids9619 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JackBahh when you are out on the water with the engines running the generator is usually off (at least in my boat it is). I have looked into SeaKeeper systems, but for my boat I would need a 4 Kw system and even with the engines on that is enormous. But with the engines off, on anchor, I would have to use almost all my generator power to keep the Seakeeper going. Normally I run the whole boat on the solar panels I have installed, only in cloudy weather I need the generator. But drawing 4 Kw per hour I can't do that on the solar panels and the generator only supplies 6 Kva. That is my big problem with Seakeeper, it is a great system, but requires way too much power. Hopefully they can bring that down a bit.

    • @JackBahh
      @JackBahh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davedavids9619 forgive me, I'm used to running large pleasure vessels where the (multiple) gen sets are on pretty much non stop (even when alongside to power the lighting, coffee machines, refrigerators etc). The trouble is they need to throw so much weight round to get the gyro effect that even in a vacuum they end up sucking power.
      I guess for boats with smaller gennies or even inverters only then yeah they are difficult to run. My assumption was that the initial draw was huge to get the thing spinning but once it was up and running they were relatively efficient.

    • @davedavids9619
      @davedavids9619 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JackBahh you are right, for the larger pleasure vessels it is normal to have large generators running. Some have multiple heavy gensets running and when capacity is not a problem you can indeed run a heavy gyro without thinking twice. My boat is a 56' MY and we spend long periods of the year on the water and on anchor. It would be great to have a stabilizing system that keeps the boat quiet and comfortable while at anchor or while underway.
      Unfortunately what I have found so far are huge energy consumers and on top of that they take up quite a bit of space. I have to admit that the energy consumption has gone down a bit. When I inquired it was 4 Kw to spool up, I just checked it is now down to 3 Kw for my size boat. The spool up I could live with, but the continuous draw after that is what creates the problems, I would still have to run the generator for that.
      But for the larger vessels, with crew, this is a great system, no doubt about it.

    Way more effective than I had imagined possible. When buying a new boat, the additional cost should amount to very little extra in the "monthly". Added on to an existing boat (you own outright) - a visit to your local banker with boat title in hand and a few boating seasons later, you'll not only get the title back (stabilizer paid off), but you'll have saved hours and hours of discomfort and even - well...

    As an owner of a 63ft motorboat which was fitted with a Seakeeper SK9 gyro 4yrs ago, just a few comments. It is not correct to say that the gyro provides stabilisation underway. As soon as the boat starts moving, the gyro provides less stabilisation and at planing speed it provides none at all. This is because of the dynamic forces on the hull generated by the movement of the hull through the water. By the time my boat reaches 10kts I cannot feel any stabilising effect from the gyro. Basically if you want stabilisation at speed youre going to have to consider fins. On the other hand, the gyro is very effective at rest so if you anchor a lot and you dont want to spill your coffee, a gyro is worth considering. Other downsides include a long spool up time (about 45mins in my case) and the necessity to run the generator all the time. Also these things are heavy (my SK9 weighs 550kg) so you need to think about where it can be located without affecting the trim of the boat
