Come lunchtime and locals in Kozhikode (Calicut) flock to this eatery set in a home in the tiny bylanes of Puthiyara. What draws the crowd here is their Ayakora or Kingfish fry and their satisfying fish meal served on a banana leaf.
Food Lovers’ editor, Kripal Amanna visits this fish fry icon and after a tour of the kitchen where fish are slathered with a secret masala, lashings of coconut oil and fried over a rubber wood fire, sits down for a sumptuous meal.
AYAKORA (KINGFISH) FRY
a much loved fish in the city, found in almost every eatery. Served here with a thick layer of a spirited masala slathered on a thick slice of kingfish, the bite of the masala has almost tamed the flavour of the fish. Slightly salty and redolent with the aroma of coconut oil, the fish fry masala is also a great accompaniment to be savoured with the rice and lentil curry.

CHEMBALI (RED SNAPPER) FRY
a plump piece of red snapper naped with the Amma Hotel masala. Since this is a meatier fish than the ayakora, the masala doesn’t penetrate all the way in. if you like your fish fry robustly flavoured the ayakora is for you. but if you like it spicy and still want to enjoy the flavour of the fish the red snapper is what you should be trying.

I reached there past 4pm and was blown away by their hospitality...they served me what was left since I told them I travelled from Mumbai. There was just a piece of fish left and all the yummy veg curry. They refused to take money at the end of the meal though my hubby insisted and paid. Best meal ever❤️
You are lucky, usually in Calicut most people are very nice but there are some people who are very rude in kerala

A FISH (GRAVY) MEAL AT JUST RUPEES FIFTY. I AM SURE, THIS IS THE FOUNDATION OF THIS EATERY FROM WHERE THEY REACHED THIS LEVEL. GREAT.
Most of the Kozhikode restaurants charge fish meals at 30-50 only, but in that fish gravy, you wont find too many pieces of fish,its more of a fish gravy there, if you want to taste fish,you need to order fish curry seperately
EVEN JUST GRAVY MEAL AND THAT TOO UNLIMITED FOR JUST RUPEES FIFTY IN KERALA IS MORE THAN WORTH THE PENNY YOU PAY; HERE IN MUMBAI YOU HAVE TO PAY AT LEAST RUPEES 120 FOR LIMITED FISH GRAVY MEAL. (ONLY GRAVY AND RICE) AND YOU WON'T GET THE FISH AS FRESH AS IN KERALA AND GOA. HERE YOU GET MORE AND MORE FROZEN FOOD.

You should try food from Coimbatore..201 varieties of eggs, like Egg Kalaki, egg karandi, quail egg, garlic egg, disco eggs etc
paati amma dosa kadai where they serve dosa using multiple grain like millets, pear millets etc also Paneer idly, poondu idlly

Amma mess, Best place at Calicut to have a homely fish meal...weekends it's very much crowded, so need to wait for your turn usually...only issue is fish cost is bit on the higher side...RS 169/- for a piece of fish fry..but still people go there attracted by the masala they use in the fish fry...most of them ask for the masala alone to eat along with the rice...
