TL;DR: Sting games are never allowed to have a happy or satisfying ending. Everything is death, desolation and cosmic nihilism, and none of your actions or choices ever matter in the bigger picture.
I always felt that was a a strike against Sting. After all if it's impossible to be happy then the struggle is pointless, you can wax poetic about as much as you want but ultimately you would have accomplished the exact same amount by simply laying down and allowing yourself to die. Now don't misunderstand me I'm perfectly okay with a bit of nihilism in my stories part of the reason I love the Dark Soul Series so much is because of how pointless everything ultimately turns out to be until the 3rd game and that I feel is important. Because in the end you didn't struggle in vain in the end your choice can actually matter and it isn't something that's handed to you either it is something you have to look for and fight for to get. Darkness induced apathy is a problem that writers have to contend with. Because the reality is it doesn't matter how compelling the world is or how rich the Lore is or how well written the characters are. If nothing good ever happens to them if every moment is just one miserable experience after another ultimately amounting to nothing then people will just stop caring.
@@artisticcannibalism1350 that just means dystopian fantasy isn't for you. The point of dystopian writing, the ones with a bleaker ending is to express that you cannot beat the system. This is especially true during war period where countless smaller forces get annihilated by bigger ones. If a smaller force wins then it becomes a power fantasy which is not the point of dystopian fantasy. Think of the whole story as you have just been led on into a trap, and you sink deeper and deeper to the point of no return. You are trapped without realising and the writing is just to unfold the tragedy.

I do not consider a story in which a happy ending was never possible to be tragic since there was never really a chance for a happy ending and therefore nothing to actually be sad about. In my opinion a true tragedy is something that could have been avoided but through the actions of the characters within the story it now becomes unavoidable. I believe that you can have your sad ending without completely screwing over the main character and undoing everything that they went through. For example what if the main character of the story realized that the situation was never really going to change and thus the game ends with him turning his back on the on the war and just leaving the country altogether. This way you get to keep your bleak ending without completely screwing him over for no reason whatsoever other than to wax poetic about the beauty of struggling which ironically misses the point that the beauty of the struggle doesn't come from the struggle itself but rather what they're struggling for.
................. No lie, the ending of this video actually make me sit in silence for a good minute. The way it just ended, it was kind of powerful, and felt like it really hit home the message of the game you were talking about. I don't know how I will but, I kind of want to play this game now. The final line of the bad ending of Gungnir has been stuck in my head since I beat it, "I just wish everything would melt away." Just an absolutely depressing game all around.
I haven’t played this game during my chilhood but something in it resonates with me. Only few games have the power to change your worldview or just merely your perception to small things. FFT WOTL and D2 are some of the games that I still play from time to time. It goes to show that games that you love are just as impactful as other important things in life. Love your vid man :)

I think every dept. Heaven game is about just playing the game, if you tried min maxing with the like 50 weapon effects in knights in the nightmare you'd go crazy
The problem is that the secrets are without a hint. There's no way to know it and there's no guide about it unless you look up for it. Reviera is the easiest one considering endings is based of how your options affect the girls. (The cat girl ending require guides along with some of the other mini secrets) Yggdra well... Not so much but it is Hard (mostly on the GBA version). The game still have some secrets and items that carries on into the next chapters that somewhat get used again in the future to unlock secrets. Otherwise the Yggdra is still completely doable without guides. Then you have fucking Knight in the Nightmare. Jesus Christ were they high when making this? Gungnir as well but it's not that hard in a way of KitN because majority of people stuck in the tutorial lmao.
If my PSP was still working, I would definitely give Gunuir a go. But damn, it sounds like for the last Sting game in the West, they got their shit together and I don't think I spied nearly their quota of menus.
My favorite part of the game was when Valerie just fucking shoved half the enemies off of cliffs on the final stage. 10/10 would mass murder again Also you’ve convinced me to pick up a thrower for new game +

This game looks amazing but also incredibly intimidating. Is this a game I can realistically just start playing and learn as I go along, or am I better off doing a ton of research beforehand? There don’t seem to be as many detailed resources as other seemingly less complex strategy games, from the little searching I’ve done.
