    I'm an interior architect and I will move to UK in couple of months. Which one is better to work in London or smaller city? Also the type of visa I got is not allowing me to work in someone's office. I have to open my own office. So please give me some suggestions for example how can I make network there?

    Hello Ula, I am an Interior Design graduate from India with over 6 years of experience in residential and commercial designing and decoration. I know AutoCAD 2D, Sketchup and I am learning Revit right now. I'm moving to UK with my husband in around Oct-Nov this year. What steps can I take or what more softwares can I learn to increase my chances of getting a good job. My sketching is really good too.
    Thanks :)

    Hi Ula, thanks for your detailed video. It’s really helpful for me. But I still don’t understand why hand-sketching is still important when we can use computer render nowadays?

    • @UlaBurgiel1
      @UlaBurgiel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Hung, that’s a very good question and the biggest paradox in the interior design world. Because everyone has got used to computer drawings and 3D renders - it doesn’t impress clients or employers anymore. Clients know that they can go to a kitchen company or a tiles shop and get the full 3D model for free. If you get a job in the interior design company and are good at CAD or 3D rendering - they’ll most likely ask you to do just that; CAD up SOMEONE ELSE’S designs. It also makes you very easily replaceable. Surprisingly you’ll never be able to actually DESIGN the spaces that you’re modelling/drawing up. You’ll also most likely stay within a lower salary bracket as the supply of workers is high. This is where the expression “CAD Monkey” comes from.
      The only solution I’ve found to get hired as a “creative designer” and paid for doing concept designs is to learn sketching well. This enables you to show your concept work through sketching. Sketching is the next level of design that makes other people think of you as an artist and not just someone who can operate a computer. Now, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t learn CAD and rendering. On the contrary, they are necessary skills you need for further stages of design development and technical design. Really, you should always start with sketching within the first stage - concept design. When designs are in 3D renderings straight away (skipping the sketching part), people don’t see the creativity in it and they think that you’ve just clicked a few buttons and the design appeared.
      So, check out the free preview of my design course where I explain the difference between the use of hand drawings, CAD drawings and 3D renderings that inexperienced designers usually don’t understand: ula-s-school-0e0c.thinkific.com/courses/professional-interior-design Please note that everything above is not based on a small local interior design studio but higher level interior design companies dealing with bigger projects.

    Who has more value an architect with interior design specialization or Bdes in interior design

    • @UlaBurgiel1
      @UlaBurgiel1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Goutham, oh wow that's an interesting one. I'm afraid there's no straight answer to it. As always, it's not exactly your degree that decides here. It's your personal skills, how you present yourself during the interview etc. Although, in London many architects started working for interior design companies - as apparently they can earn more there. Sometimes you can be overqualified (architect with an interior design specialisation) and instead of designing you'll be given more project managing tasks. Salary wise I think it'll be similar. Best to ask recruiters for exact figures though.

    • @UlaBurgiel1
      @UlaBurgiel1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Sadaf, I would recommend starting with your favourite companies and sending them the BEST portfolio you can produce. Look for "careers" section on their website and if they don't have any, try to connect with a few of their employees (management level) on LinkedIn. You can write a short message when you invite them to connect - it's really effective. A friend of mine got an internship with one of the top firms this way.
      Secondly, email ANY other company you can possibly find online (I emailed 200 when I was in your shoes, got only 5 replies, mostly negative but one started off my career). So don't get disheartened when you don't get a reply - people simply don't have the time to respond. Keep going and send reminders after a week.
      Good luck with your applications.
