I listened to this CD over and over while detoxing from opiates. I was so sick. felt so dead that the only way I knew I was alive was listening to the music. I'm 5years clean and will NEVER go back. listening to this is painfully empowering.
I know whereof you speak....several songs associated SO powerfully in my mind and soul with highly specific trials and tribulations...even a few notes of them elicits sometimes overwhelming emotion within nanoseconds....namaste, and peace on your journey, Angie....
+Brian Welsh that's alot of people's experiences. we're dismissed as junkies, people who climbed Into that dark hole on our own. it's not always that. for some it was a physical injury or a mental disorder that brought us to a doctor who was the pusher. addiction can be a side effect of something other than just self imposed recklessness. congratulations to you as well. I'm sure you have many stories you've gathered over the years as well.
+Brian Welsh what a wonderful recovery story! you wouldn't believe when you start opening up to people how many have been through the same. keep on that beautiful path to a long rewarding life! everyday is a new day. a 2nd chance to make the bad days good. :)

Master vocalist right here. He can’t hit the sustained high notes anymore and a little adjustment flexes more skill and increases emotional impact even more. They captured lightning in a bottle this night.
This was my daughters favorite song and we watched this video over and over and we would point out all our favorite parts to each other even though we already knew what each other loved and was going to say. Unfortunately I had to live out the lyrics of this song but instead of my mother it was my beautiful daughter. I love you baby girl and we’ll always have this memory together RIP BABY LOVE ALWAYS DAD
What a great bond you had with your daughter . This song is what I love about music. Each part of this band is spectacular. The guitar work is one of my favorite things. Maynard and Billy complement each other so well.
Im so sorry for your loss my friend. As a mom this song hit me differently. Especially since my 7 year daughter always tells me we are connected by an invisible line. This song is a painful tragedy between mother and child but that bond can never be broken
Just passing by telling you that I recently discovered that there's an alternate live version of the song, where the first verse is completely different. And it's delicious!
This is without a doubt the single best live performance of any song by anyone throughout history. Maynard, the back up lyrics, the guitar solo, the drums. Everything is absolutely perfect
Definitely up there with some of the best recorded live shows. Check out Devin Townsend live at Royal Albert Hall, Porcupine Tree live at Tilburg and Leprous live at Rockefeller Hall
"Gotta cut away, clear away Snip away and sever this Umbilical residue that's Keeping me from killing you" so tragic - the way i interrupt this from what i know is basically he is saying he needs to just cut the cord for his mother even though their eternal bond is keeping him from being able to let her go. I know he had to make an awful decision to let her go and that line gut punches me..he knows that he is connected to his mother in such a special way. Chills every time.
Maynard delivers on every level here and the camera work adds an extra level of eeriness to his performance. Like never getting to see the face behind the mask. We are so lucky to have him.

I love Greek mythology... and to be able to write a badass song is awesome.. I think I read somewhere that Maynard had some type of feeling of this song... because of his own mother..
Orestes (Stone and Echo) and Nutshell by Alice in Chains, are beautifully written. They just keep getting better and better with time. It's hard to think of a week that has gone by without listening to either of these songs at least once over the last 10 years. Btw they flow perfectly into one another and once you listen to them together it's hard to listen to one and not listen to the other.
Idk if it's their best song but it's very good. I mean you still got Passive and Pet and 3 Libras and Judith and Outsider and Blue and Package. Lol they are all the best.
No amount of words can begin to describe what I feel when listening to this song. Don't mean to come across as a pompous ass, but seriously had I never heard this song in my life I'd probably be lost. This song has been with me ever since I first heard it.
I actually found this album at an empty House that was going to be put up for sale. I was helping my cleaning it before the Open House started while she mopped the floors I was sweeping the garage and there it was in the corner by the door. I was 13 years old. I popped it in my moms minivan on the way back home and I fell in love with the music. Became a Rock fan a TOOL fan a Maynard fan. The style the art the history a metal head a hippie a punk rocker all of the above.
I listened to this song on repeat my first kick at the can of getting sober. This and The Package. I related to The Package in so so many ways. Its not easy looking back on your life and taking your personal inventory into consideration. I wasn't a very nice person when i was using. I will be 3 years sober next month and as another person has already said, I will no longer turn to the bottle for answers, its just more misery, and misery loves company. One Day at a Time. Its Maynards singing in this song, the echo timing, he really sounds like hes really feeling this song. Everything about this live performance oozed perfection.
I tingle so hard to this. Maynard is just so wicked, man. I'd bloody listen to him every freakin day till I die. so good with headphones at th highest.
As incredible a virtuoso vocalist Maynard is not to mention the coolest close ups ever from the side with the dark sunglasses, Billy Howerdel is THE SHOW here. The remarkably grandiose and extraordinary extended guitar solo, the equally cavalier stage presence, and most of all the golden one man choir sultry vocal range he possesses. Neither man is a mere mortal. And yes this is the best performance of any song by anyone I have had the great pleasure of listening to a hundred times... this week.
This. Reading the majority of the comments you'd think Maynard composed this song, played a mean guitar solo for at least a third of it, and backed himself on the vocals here. As godly figure as he is in general, he's only one half of the perfect circle.
@@StayWeird bro chill tf out, Maynard is the one that makes these groups happen. You can see how much he is the essence of this band by how terrible Skeletor's solo projects are. Also yea, Maynard is the common demoninator for three ingenious bands. Nobody else here did anything else remarkable.

This song used to play in my head all the time, especially the part 'I don't wanna feel this overwhelming Hostility'
4:48! If you don't have a tear yet listen to it a few more times. This song is one of my all time favorite songs by Maynard. This is a very emotional song. I connect this song with my mother, I also think he wrote this song about his mother as well. So... You could relate this song to anything that you are trying to detach yourself from. For me I had to hear this song A few times before I fell in love with all of the sounds, now I'll listen to it they all are in Perfect Harmony and fit right where they should. Maynard's voice is very captivating and addictive to me. Anyone else agree?

Metaphor for a missing moment
Pull me into your perfect circle
One womb
One shape
One resolve
Liberate this will
To release us all

For those who don't know, Orestes is a Greek character that was forced by the gods to kill his mother .Only that way he would be free of the circle of violence that surrounded his family.
He killed his mother because she killed his fatjer fist, Clitemnestra its her name, wife of Agamenon!
He was later killed by a snake after he claimed his fathers thrown.
