All manufacturers sell lifestyles. There is the Sportbike lifestyle, the neo-retro cafe / scrambler lifestyle, the moto-cross lifestyle, even the Grom lifestyle. That is how they market motorcycles and just about any other luxury item out there. Otherwise everyone would be riding a Honda 500cc bike, and driving a Nissan Sentra.

@@mikeskidmore6754 You are right on. I dumped my HD Slim for a Moto Guzzi Audace. Much better bike but one of the reasons was that I no longer wanted to be associated with the pirate crowd. They have done more to damage public's perception of motorcyclists than anything else I can think of. Honda's 'Nicest People" did a lot in the 60's to improve the image. In the 60's a lot of restaurants as well as other businesses had signs out "No Motorcycles". It seems that we are going back to that in some ways. Start with cracking down on loud exhausts. One business near me hasn't excluded bikes but made them park in an area that is very difficult on a bike.

Harley's snarky "Polaris" ad makes me wonder how many guys grew up dreaming of bikes that used to be made by a bowling equipment company. Who gives a sh*t who the parent corporation is? I want the better bike. And if I ride away with more money in my pocket so much the better.

No matter the product group, there will always be fanboys. Motorcycles, cars, computer parts you name it. If there is more than company making it, you better bet there is fanboys who will claim that the company they have is the absolute best bar none! And irrelevant stuff like facts that clearly shows it isn't won't bother them, they find a way to justify it. And if you try to tell them that its just a big faceless company. That at the end of the day they only care about profits and the shareholders, you are lucky if all they do is stop talking to you!

The one thing Indian is not capitalising on is just how much more rear suspension travel their bikes have and how this makes riding them a pleasure and not a sacrifice to god of ego for the sake of sticking to a name.
I ride a Road King now but having ridden the new Indians, I would have to honestly say that Indian absolutely flogs Harley in the comfort and handling sectors and the power sector when talking about the Challenger, there is literally nothing in Harley's touring chassis range that can compete. Performance doesn't matter one bit? You'd better believe it does! The "performance bagger" segment of motorcycling is huge right now. The bike in this segment of motorcycling needs to have lots of power and torque, great handling, great brakes, and enough storage to take a decent road trip. The Challenger has just re-written the book on how this should be done on a stock bike. The good thing is that Harley will now have to step it up and we will see better bikes because of it.

I get a kick out of kids who think peak power is some meaningful metric. If you learn to ride, you won't require near as much power to run circles around the newbs...on any fun roads anyway.

It's the rotator cuff in the shoulder, a common and painful aftermath of living a full physical life. They should have been focussing on the next generation long ago, not producing 10,000 variations on a theme that can be modified 10,000 ways with Screamin Eagle products. Dickheads. Gibson guitars went down a similar path.

I can't speak for everyone, but I understood there were "better" options when I bought a harley, however, I was buying a project when I picked up my 2016 fxdl. I have replaced nearly every OEM piece outside the frame (not a harley fanboy outside of their bikes) and built my dream bike which looks great, performs well, but most importantly, is what I wanted from the start. I plan to do the same thing building a performance road glide build soon. Can't beat the aftermarket for harley if you enjoy turning your own wrenches.

Anything to stick it in the ribs of Harley Corporate to step it up is good news to me. There's a lot I love about the Indian Challenger, but in the end it wasn't the bike for me. I took the Road Glide To all four corners of mainland USA last year without any problems other than a bad tail light housing. Only shop time was spent on maintenance and tire changes.

I have said a million times Polaris does not have good engineering and the only guy I even know that has bought a challenger is a guy who posts TH-cam videos here and his had to be hauled to the dealer to be flashed after 400 miles.. not to mention Harley sells more street glides then Polaris sells Indian bikes total... what a joke

We have 3 road glides now , not saying the road glide is the superior but we also have a 5 to 1 ratio of Harley dealers for customer support and backing instead of one mannetos power sports for Indian . As you stated both companies are struggling but for me it’s the worry that Indian does what victory did as both owned by Polaris . Stay safe and ride what makes you feel good !

Indian is done. Abandonment of Victory motorcycle by Polaris. 1% of population rides motorcycles. Polaris alienated all their Victory riders by screwing them over and dropping parts/support. You can try to sell non-riders motorcycles, but good luck. No real biker is going to ride Polaris where they hang you out to dry. Wife is stuck with Victory., and don't you know, we tell everybody that looks at Indian. Stood outside Indian booth at big bike rally, and stopped every customer that left booth, and told them what Polaris had done to Victory riders, and expect same screwing over,a again. More Polaris doesn't support older Razors with parts. Pay over $10K for something from Polaris, and a few years latter, it's same as Chinese/Korean import junk. No parts availability.

Does performance alone matter on a bagger? Eh. Does performance matter when the bike that performs significantly better also costs significantly less? Oh yeah, now we’re talking.
I’m a young rider who’s just getting into the game, I spent the whole summer working two jobs, 7 days a week just to keep the bills paid and was fortunate enough to be able to save up enough cash to buy myself a 2002 Honda shadow on craigslist for about 2k. It’s everything I wanted it to be and is serving my needs well. But I’ve always wanted a Harley low rider, which to me was always my dream bike.
When Indian makes bikes that are better than harleys and cost way less, what’s the point anymore? My generation is broke af dude, and don’t try selling us on financing cause we’re already financing a million other things like our cars and homes, which take enough out of us as it is.
This is why if Harley wants to prevent themselves from going under, they have to start charging customers what their bikes are actually worth.

  • @nokoolaid
    @nokoolaid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The problems for me with these bikes is there's nowhere to stow some gear, like FF helmets, cost/value versus other bikes in the same price range and the extra unnecessary weight. If you're spending 29K on a bike, what else is there? I can think of the Goldwing, K1600 and R1250RT. All three are better than the two here in terms of function and value.

  • @jimmydavis5055

Indian better hang onto Challengers because I am defiantly going to buy this bike when I'm ready. I just bought my first bike, so it's going to be a little bit before I'm in the market for a bagger. The Challenger is everything I wish Harley would be. Well, kind of. I wish it came in the bat wings. It's still new, so I'm letting some stuff slide. Like, right now every challenger looks the same. I hope there are some badass looking customs out there in the future. I'm also concerned with being eco-friendly, and this bike is the closest thing to that.
I still think that HD makes some of the most beautiful motorcycles out there. They have a better dealer network and community, but I guess that doesn't bother me as much. I'm thinking the challenger will run until the wheels fall off, so dealer networks shouldn't be as much of an issue. That being said, I keep going back and forth. I like to root for the underdog, so I'll likely stick with indian.

Building better, technically advanced and more refined bikes isn't what drives Harley sales, such as they are. Right now they are in a bind between attracting new customers who want modern bikes without alienating those that still want their lifestyle brand. Their new lineups are testing the waters but until they fully embrace a modern lineup they're unlikely to succeed.
I for one would enjoy walking into a HD stealership to see their heritage bikes sharing floor space with a modern lineup that didn't look like it was designed by 12 year olds. There would have to be parity in the line ups though, not filling the gaps with bikes designed to attract children.
