    My son is an avionics technician at Seymour Johnson AFB. His assigned jet is the F-15E Strike Eagle. While I don't get to see him as much as I'd want, since he lives and works on the other side of the US from me, videos such as these increase my knowledge of what he's working on, so I can understand a little of what he's saying. Thanks for the video.

As a former USAF pilot (O-8 ret.), who flew the C & E models for 18 years, I'd like to extend my thanks to all of you fine men and women who kept this wonderful bird airworthy and deadly. There are many ground pounders who also owe you a thanks for the many CAS missions we flew in OIF & OEF. Here's to another 50 years of service for the Eagle!

      Technically the STOL/MTD is the same physical aircraft, but the MTD is a revised design change on the STOL.
      The STOL was a testbed for a military procurement proposal for F-15 STOL, and it would have differed somewhat from the STOL demonstrator (finding a new place for the gun, refining it as an ultra-maneuverable combat aircraft, etc.). The full proposal was fairly different from the test aircraft. For example, it would not have used F-18 rear horizontal stabilizers for canards, like the test plane. It would have been a gen 4.5+
      When that proposal was "ghosted" from the public eye, to prevent any 'threat' to the ATF program (YF-23 & YF-22) in the eyes of congressmen who approve budgets, NASA picked up the testbed aircraft and reconfigured it as the MTD, a research platform for supermaneuverability (much like the X-31).

Held that ONE job for about 40 years, retiring just before I was born when he got sick from being exposed to certain chemicals for so long. He never even finished elementary school, yet worked a job for so long and provided EVERYTHING our family has.

    The F-15EX is such an advancement over the legacy F-15, that it can be considered to be a new fighter that shares most of its airframe with the legacy Eagle. The upgraded avionics and in particular its new fly-by-wire flight control system added THAT much additional capability and performance. Its maneuvering capability is spookily similar to the F-22 and it can now carry up to 12 AMRAAMs, more than anything else flying. And more.

    You missed the YF-15A "Streak Eagle"; "Streak Eagle" is an early preproduction aircraft. Differences in internal structure and systems operation made it too costly to return to operational service. It was delivered to the USAF museum in December 1980 after it was no longer useful as a flight test vehicle.

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The F-15 has superior:
      - payload
      - reliability
      - range (particularly the E, and now EX)
      - radar
      - airframe durability
      - and it's extremely maneuverable vs. other 4th gen aircraft, even with a heavy payload on it
      The Sukhoi's do have some advantages too though. Frankly the Su-27 doesn't have any advantages over the F-15. But the Su-35 derivative, over time, grew into a really good plane.
      Looking specifically at the Su-35S (circa 2012 or 2013):
      - higher thrust:weight ratio
      - thrust vectoring for turn rate at very low speed
      - price
      This would put a late model (emphasis on "late model") Sukhoi in a favorable position in an old-school "gun-sight" dogfight. With more energy recovery, and greater maneuverability when dipping into very slow speed (through TV), a sukhoi 35 made in the last decade would have an advantage, though not enough of an advantage to erase pilot skill as the dominant factor. The US didn't really pursue "4.5 gen" fighter tech, instead focusing entirely on 5th gen. Until the F-18E/F anyway, and eventually the F-15X and EX. Although the super hornet and F-1 5EX don't really focus on super-maneuverability.
      The only problem with stealing the maneuverability trophy, is that modern missile tech is really deconstructing how dogfights work. And frankly, the Russian short range IR-guided missile (in the 90's) helped progress that trend. It had an ultra-wide angle seeker, which greatly reduced the need to paint the target with the nose of your aircraft. Around the same time, the US was working out how they would get missiles which are inside an internal weapons bay (on the F-22) to lock onto targets, basically giving missiles a synthetic sense of space, and a telemetry-based sense of their guidance & target. The result of these technological changes to missile tech really resulted in game changing ordinance & fire control tech. And as a result, "dogfighting maneuverability" became a lot less meaningful. The culmination of which is in the F-35, blending EOTS & distrubuted sensors for a 360 degree picture of the air space, HMDS (helmet mounted display system), HOBS (high off bore sight) missile targeting, and networking tech... which means if you can see an F-35 (from 'any' angle) then you've been targetable by the F-35 for quite some time. Frankly stealth is a secondary feature for the Lightning II.
      Now air combat maneuverability is mostly about missile evasion. Unless you run out of missiles and actually have to use the gun, but that's like an infantryman running out of bullets and having to use his knife... aka "sub-optimal" when other people on the battlefield still have bullets.

Based on how well the F-15EX is turns out. Though many in the USAF think it might be simpler just to buy more F-15EX's and just outright replace the F-15C's. During the time it will take the NGAD to be picked, tested and built. Though the USAF just announced that it wants prototype submission for 3 companies. The recently flow NGAD was just a proof of concept and not meant as prototype or production aircraft of any type. So even if the NGAD is eventually fielded on mass it will still take years to achieve and the USAF would rather have F-15EX missile and bomb trucks that could work with its upgraded F-22's and upgrade F-35's.

    Led here by an image showing the evolution of the F15. It specified that the F-15E's first flight was in 2010, and that they hadn't yet gone into production?! I was a crew chief on F-15C/D models in 1995 at a base where a sister squadron was flying F-15Es regularly, so I knew this was BS and came to see. The slide in question appears around minute 6 of this video and shows more believable data, leaving me with three questions. 1) Why would the advertising image have info that is patently false unless it was intended as misdirecting clickbait? 2) Why would the advertising image's info differ from that in the video since a simple cut and paste would have prevented the error unless the false info was created intentionally as misdirecting clickbait? 3) Why would I ever watch any video ever again by The Buzz, seeing that they employ deception to lure in viewers whom they obviously don't respect?

    A little galling that the F-22 fleet is now going to be supported and possibly supplanted by the very craft it was meant to replace. Whoever named it the Eagle must have been pretty confident the aircraft was going to be something special. Or I wonder if whether the F-15s success, longevity and evolution is because it's named after America's national bird. Can you imagine the headlines and uproar when they try to retire this thing? They'll have to make a variant capable of interplanetary combat; the Star Eagle.

      Frankly the video which documents this rather sensationalizes the event, and claims that the McD-D engineers couldn't believe it.
      But that's not really true. It's 'designed' to be able to fly on one wing. As well as with various other parts of the plane missing.
      The engines are close together to allow it to operate efficiently on one engine (with an armored plate between them to prevent damage propagation, the vertical stabilizers are fully vertical so that there's no strangely angled control behavior if one of them is blown off the plane, etc.

    • @gitpicker
      @gitpicker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kathrynck No, it wasn't designed to fly with one wing. No aircraft was. It was amazing enough that the VP for the F-15 at McDonnell Douglas had a model of the "wingless" aircraft on his desk, given to him by a grateful Israeli Air Force.

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gitpicker The engine proximity and completely vertical tails, redundancy of hydraulics, self-sealing fuel tanks, etc. Were all designed to take severe combat damage.
      That the engines were put very close together was actually a dual challenge, because it did allow for better handling if one of the wings and same side engine was lost (more central thrust), but it required armoring between the engines to prevent one engine from taking out the other. The straight-up parallel vertical stabilizers are not ideal for super sonic flight, but offer the most normalized handling of one of them is shot off.
      We didn't exactly build a test plane with one wing, that would be reckless. And it wasn't the primary reason for using a lifting-body. But it WAS looked at in wind tunnel tests. With one engine lit, the fuselage and same-side wing can do a pretty good job of countering each other in yaw forces, requiring an only slightly side-goggled flight path.
      The F-15 isn't as armored as the A-10 or F-4, but it had extreme redundancy and deep absorbtion of battle damage in it's design.
      That someone was able to LAND the plane in that condition though, is what was surprising, and amazingly skilled.

      F-15 ACTIVE was never in a competition that would result in production to begin with, and the JSF program only became incredibly expensive midway through the F-35's development due to political interference and poor oversight from the military. Besides, the F-15 ACTIVE would only replace other F-15s, which were already being replaced by the far superior F-22.
