    Any “ Evolution” of the F/A-18 MUST include what it evolved from. It’s origin begins with the F-5 Freedom Fighter which gave birth to the Y/F-17, a smaller version of what would become the F/A-18. The Y/F-17 flew off against the F-16 in flight trials but lost. The Y/A-17 was redesigned into the F/A-18 because the Navy need to replace its aging F-4 and F-14 fleets.

      The F/A-18 was not envisioned as a replacement to the F-14 until the F-22N was canned.

      thats wrong. if anything it was a replacement of the A4 skyhawks. its absolutely a carrier attacker. that can also do very competent air to air.
      the F14 getting replaced had little to do with this and didnt happen until 2005 so they are very unrelated.

    When I got to the fleet the A and B models were gone and the C/D models were in service. I was on the USS Theodore Roosevelt from 86 to 90 and we had two squadrons of F-18's. If I remember right, it was mostly the C models (single seat) and a few D's. One badass plane.

    It would be really interesting to trace the history of the F/A-18 back all the way through the entire set of stages Northrop (not MDD) followed when designing it.
    The N-300 (mid-wing, scaled-up F-5), then the P-530/600/610, then finally how MDD and Northrop evolved the design to meet the NFAX specification.

    As far as I can ascertain thee overwing “conformal” fuel tanks on the latest Block III F/A-18E/F Super Hornet has not been accepted by the Navy. Apparently there are performance issues with the tanks for carrier operations and unless solved they will not be incorporated in the Navy's Block III.

    Thought I’d post a comment 2 - read a few and enjoyed the one from the TomCat fan - with that I thought I’d give a history lesson on the 14 and the 18 as most who try Fuck up from the start. Work had begun on the Tom around 69 - my father started Grumman in 65 as an accountant/ was asked by Leroy to go to engineering school - graduated in 69 and immediately started on the Tom airframe - I’ll fast forward to 1980 - shortly when Regan became Prez - Carter had almost killed the Cat so Grumman had asked Hollywood for help in producing a movie: The final countdown - they succeeded and their hopes (Regan to watch) he was given a private screening in the hopes of increasing Tomcat Production - with that Grumman was given an audience/ a Govt Rep named Dick Cheney - (Yes VP Dick Cheney) immediately the Grumman rep discovered that Dick knew nothing about Defense Aircraft (still doesn’t) so Grumman asked for someone with a background in defense aircraft - the rep was elated with the 14 so production was greatly increased an Grumman made history with not only TomCat improvements but A-6 improvements and the E-2C - In the 90’s Bush/Cheney became Prez and VP and immediately Cheney asked Grumman for an apology from years earlier - a team of Grumman engineers met (my father included) and decided to tell Cheney pound sand. With that Cheney (with way to much power) halted production of everything Grumman including rail production of the LIRR - soon F-14’s became obsolete\ not needed dinosaurs of the past that cost way too much and too many maintenance hours - soon the DOD was pushing for production of the 18 - a shit jet that neither the Navy or USAF wanted. Cheney in his stupidity tried to cut costs by cancelling the A-6 and the 14 by merging both into an airframe that is good at neither the 18 hence the term AF-18 or attract fighter - it neither Carrie’s the arsenal of the A-6 or the 14 nor the distance but we have it now cuz Cheney hated Grumman and fucked We the People - he forced 32,000 families including mine outta work with a hostile takeover by Northrop and killed our Railroad by having to buy rail cars at over 10x the cost including shipping from Germany (we are still paying for it in NY) the proud son of a Grumman Airframe Engineer recently deceased..

We call it the Advanced-er Shit-talking Super-long Range Air-to-air Missile. For secret military reasons we decided to drop the second ‘A’ for this one. @Newie69MK ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Speed isn't as important these days given the nature of today's aerial warfare. What the Hornet lacks in speed however makes up for it with it's agility and overall versatility.

    • @dumdumbinks274
      @dumdumbinks274 ปีที่แล้ว

      *McDonnell Douglas. But to answer your question it's because they had to sacrifice performance in favour of fuel efficiency. The original Hornet barely met the minimum requirements for range and payload, so they couldn't afford to increase it's performance. Several were lost just because they ran out of fuel when returning from missions.
      The Super Hornet was developed to rectify the Hornet's lack of range and payload. It does have significantly more powerful engines, but it is also a bigger airframe producing a lot more drag. It was about as much as they could do while retaining a range advantage over the original Hornet.

    • @DavidRLentz

      @@dumdumbinks274 , thank you, thank you, thank you for your error correction. What is especially embarrassing is that I know the correct manufacturer. I was juggling too many names as I was composing and editing. I have updated my comment, above.
      Thanks also for your explication. I had read much as you state above. The real issue is why the Navy and/or the DoD had not kept the Grumman F-14D "Tomcat" Air Superiority Fighter and its subsequent variants. I have read it was a maintenance nightmare.
      Recent scuttlebutt of the "Super Duper Tomcat" (I simply this to "Ultra Tomcat") might offer resolutions to all these issues. Even so, I rather doubt the Pentagon would essentially double back.
      If anything, the Lockheed Martin F-35B "Lightning II" U.S. Navy Attack Fighter would fill that space--though I understand it to be no faster. Aside from stealth, what is its advantage over the F-18 and the F-14? Additionally, the obvious follow-on question is "what next?"

      Wrong, one is pilot and one is radar officer. Pilot is still the gunner and missile shooter the job of the rio is to detect enemy and operate electronic jamming system, autonomous detecting like in F22 and F35 is expensive and it still needs rational decision like a human mind.

      @@makegaminggreatagain3907 Your original post was totally correct. Nowadays in regards to two-seat warplanes, one is the pilot and another is the "gunner", or more specifically "Weapons System Officer". Their job is the using and deploying the weapons. That's not to say that the pilot can't use the weapons, or the WSO is the only one who can use the weapons. Simply that the weapons are the WSO's primary responsibility.
      The other guy's information is outdated. There have not been "radar officers" or "RIOs" in US Military fighter planes since the F-14 Tomcat was retired in 2006. Electronics have advanced to the point where a pilot can fly and work the radar by themselves. The current "WSO" has other responsibilities than using the radar.
      While a pilot could theoretically do most things by themselves, a two-seat can make it easier in some situations. The pilot can become overloaded from all the multi-tasking they have to do. When there is another person in the airplane, that second person can take some of the workload off the pilot, allowing the pilot to better concentrate on other things.
      Some specific examples are monitoring and communicating with the airplane's radios (particularly in the "Forward Air Controller-Airborne" mission), and the usage of certain weapons like laser-guided bombs. A person in the back seat performing these roles allows the pilot to concentrate on flying and not become overloaded from trying to do too many things at once.
      You could of it like having a passenger in your car. Do you think you could handle driving, watching out for hazards, looking at the GPS, and having a phone conversation at the same time? Wouldn't it be easier if you could have a friend or family member in the car handle the GPS and phone for you instead, allowing you to concentrate on driving and looking out for hazards?

    F-18 range could be doubled or tripled on internal fuel alone by replacing it's two engines with one C-17 type engine that has equal thrust.

    • @snegik
      @snegik 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The increase in cross-section (if the C-17 engines are thicker and I think so) would create tons of drag + the afterburner installation will be funky, the aircraft's area rule will be broken and it will have a really hard time going supersonic even if it has more thrust. One way to go around this is to take off the fan of the C-17 engine to make a low bypass afterburning turbofan maybe that will actually work

    • @snegik
      @snegik 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Other than the difficulty in going supersonic if you want a subsonic attack plane like the A-7 then that might be fine but the cost will be high

    not to mention, that the super hornet has literally and figuratively nothing in common and/or to do with the classic hornet but the visual design, minus the intakes and the most forward wing sections, they look identical, but they arent at all. plus you forgot to mention, that all the XT models upgrades are right now already being largely incorporated into all super hornet models. how else could the super hornets link up in flight together and with the marines aircraft carriers drone squadrons?

    • @kubefs

      not just visuals, the cockpit of the super hornet is largely the same as the legacy C variant, as well as the flight characteristics

    Great beautiful airplane; classic gets slow fast and fast slow, my favorite jet ever. But "excellent aerodynamic characteristics?" Baloney. Sharp leading edges mean aerodynamic instability, overcome by computer extrapolation of pilot inputs. Without that it would be a nightmare to fly. Excellent aerodynamic characteristics are owned by gliders. This airplane compensates for poor aerodynamics with high power and fly-by-wire software.

    • @thealvatar6181

      I see your point. But these are Naval strike fighters. So they are designed to take off from a carrier. So they don’t need to go too fast because the carrier can sail them anywhere. Unlike a normal fighter that is restricted by how far it’s airbase is form it’s target.
