    Welcome back to the May 2024 episode of ADV NEWS. As usual we have plenty of great adventure and dual sport stories to get through. Kove's CEO steps down & what does that mean for the company moving forward? KTM have been very busy with a whole pile of adventure bikes caught out testing. CFMoto are set to launch their 800MT-X and is Triumph building a more dirt capable Scrambler 400X?
    Thanks for watching,

    I was randomly the 1st person in the western world to get the new CFmoto MT450 down here in New Zealand about 4 weeks ago and I've been absolutely blown away with how good it is.
    8, yes 8 of my adventure friends have now put deposits down on getting one each after riding mine.
    If that's anything to go by the CFmoto 890 will be an amazing bike

      Me, my mate (he has one too) and other real life owners here have found the suspension a bit firm despite what TH-cam launch videos said. May be the ones in the Philippines had different spring rates for lighter riders.

      @@willyd-adv Yes, especially on the back end. Haven't really had enough time to feel what the front was like as slow ride home in traffic and road works. But back did feel harder and didn't really move or bounce like I do on my enduro. Could be a use thing and time. I did notice that there didn't look like much thread on the rear spring preload either to back off or tighten.
      But I didn't have enough light ito see so can't exactly confirm that without a good look with decent lighting. Just seemed a bit strange at the time.
      The few aussie reviews I saw at the launch said the front was a bit soft so maybe they stiffened them up at the shop or still too new and need some wearing in.

      Horses for courses. A largely road biased bike that can manage easy trails whilst blasting 2 up over big distances ticks more boxes for more people than a highly strung, enduro based bike. I'm lucky enough to have a Tiger 900 Rally Pro and a gorgeous adventurised FE 501. Both bikes are compromises but acceptable. The 501 has surprisingly good road manners with balanced wheels and a rally raid type fairing but is fantastic off road. The Tiger on knobblies is surprisingly competent off road and a delight on road.

      @@TheIdlesurfer I still don't get it.
      When the Z1000 Kawasaki came out back in 77 "Two Wheels" had the headline on the cover "WHO'LL RIDE THE MEAN MOTHER?". It had a claimed 83hp, and actually made about 72 at the rear wheel. Yet today I see people on the V-Strom forum asking if the 650 has enough power to carry a pillion, a bike with the same horse power as the Z1000 and 40 kg lighter.
      I've owned a CBR1000, and I reckon in the 5 years I had it I accumulated less than one minute of near redline, full throttle riding (excluding racetrack time). It's not like I hung at the back of the pack on it. I wore out a set of knee sliders on the road (not on the track, on the road), and a rear tyre sometimes only lasted the weekend. The thing would lay a fat black stripe out of turn 2 at eastern creek on half throttle and that's fast enough that you're looking at jail if you did it on the road.
      I sound like a boring old fart, but seriously, why would you carry around all that extra weight for years that you might use for a few seconds every month?

    • @TheIdlesurfer
      @TheIdlesurfer 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gasdive funnily enough, I had the same thought. I had a 1290 SA. 165 bhp claimed. I never used about 70 of those ponies. My 900 Tiger is sub 100 ponies. It is as fast and as powerful as I'm ever going to need on the road. My talent and reaction time will never trouble the upper limits of my 888cc middle weight. I'm guessing we're similar age. We may be old farts but with grey hair comes the wisdom of not falling for the "you need more power" schtick. I bounced the big Katoom off the rev limiter in 3rd, maybe 4th and I needed more power like a fish needs a bicycle. Btw, how did bikes bigger than 750 become middleweights? When I started riding, 750s were big bikes, litre plus bikes were rare and I was happy tear arsing around on a 350 YPVS.

      An 800x arrived here in Oz three weeks ago for testing/adr. The 450 is almost adr compliant and was having further testing at finke. There is conflicting information about confirmation for a local distributor.

    Have had the 2020 KTM Adventure R for the past 4 years. Trouble free, goes where I point it BUT with all the new 790 and 890 and now 800 iterations ( even 901 with the Huskys) the bike lacks originality. It is becoming a high performance sedan that is difficult to recognize apart from the others without looking at a badge.
    May be time for a Guzzi.

    The creative differences probably stem from the fact that Kove is an offshoot from a much larger manufacturer who primarily sold in the domestic market (and world wide under Colove and other brand names) and a couple of years ago restructured making Kove the primary export brand name and with the best will in the world making a "cheapo" rally bike isn't goiing to be a sales killer in the size of market they operate in, their capacity is 1m + units per year.
    Rally might have been the ex-CEO's pet project but his overlords had obviously other ideas, that for this season they have hired an ex-world champion to race their bike (the NKT 321RR-S) in the Supersport World Championships and the effort to develop the 450RR tells us where the wind is blowing.

  • @wanderlpnw
    @wanderlpnw 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have a 1290 R, the rally is just way too extreme. Even the R doesn't sell well anywhere I've heard of.
    I wonder what they'll call the 990 adventure bike. They already had a 990 adventure. Just now it's a "middle weight" though more powerful than the original.

    Not "standoffish" of chinese companies, but much more deeply concerned over financial and moral implications of dealing with them.. but would STILL possibly consider because of the bike offering, and I have experience selling chinese bikes 20 years ago in the US.

    I own a KTM and won't be buying the new generation due to how fugly the headlights are. Even Yamaha knew they stuffed up with the headlight on their bikes which is why they changed it for their new MT range yet KTM decided to copy previous generation lights.

    No china bike for me. Their ATV's have issues as soon as they come off the showroom. Expect the same for the bikes. Corners are cut and rounded a little to far. Triumph is most likely a one off built to race. New KTM's look better, about time. 1490 monster? Big news is R20 from BMW, I want one. Good vid next time Mate

    Unless I'm being tricked by the low resolution, the image of the Triumph scrambler is almost certainly AI generated and so i wouldn't put much stock in it.
    The bars and cables morph together into one structure, the house/ background is weird as hell, and the headlight housing just does not look right.

    • @chroniclesofsolid
      @chroniclesofsolid  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is hard to know without having the weight of the new 390 Adventure it is based off of. However, given the engine is essentially a known quantity weight wise. Lets just say i would be very surprised if this bike is sub 170kg. I would love to see it but I think its going to be heavier than the 690 Enduro.
