2,147,483,647 isn’t actually a randomly chosen number, it’s actually the 32 bit integer limit, and 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,455 is the 128 bit integer limit, in fact a lot of these numbers that break some stuff actually either are integer limits, or halved or doubled integer limits
right but roblox used float32 instead of 64, so you can go to the 1024 bit integer on float64 but on float32 youre stuck at 128 due to floating point limitations.
the real question tho is: why does it default to the 32 bit integer limit? is it because it uses that many bits for the number itself or what?
@@tristantheoofer2 idk, I find breaking game limitations kinda fun sometimes, I’ve never seen the skybox do that though

I'm gonna make a guess as to why the explosion sound plays when you cross Roblox's true barrier. I think this happens because that's the sound the game makes whenever it deletes a part, and it's deleting the parts that make up the player in order to prevent a crash due to a random bit just outside of player position getting flipped.

Precision bugs aren’t caused by overflows and it’s just how floating point numbers are designed. We need them to represent really big and really small numbers, but when trying to allocate that with 32 bits we have to make some sacrifices (since we obviously cant represent every single number). Theres alot of precision on numbers closer to 0, but the further and further away we go, each step becomes larger and larger to accommodate for bigger numbers since if you are at something like 1.7x10^23, you most likely dont care about the extra decimal precision. I recommend watching jan misali’s video on the IEEE 784 standard if you want to learn more about how floats are constructed.
yeah thats what i was trying to say but didnt know how to do it lol
I ain't reading all that
Interesting, ty
After reaching an exponent of 2, the precision will get halfened. Even at the range of 0 to 1. The 32-bit floating point format can represent 16777216 thanks to the exponent part of the number, but it won't be able to represent 16777217 because that requires the mantissa to be 24 bits which is impossible in the 32-bit format. It can work in the 64-bit format though!(referred to as "double" in some stuff) The maximum safe number for the 64-bit format is also way bigger than the 32-bit one(which is 16777216)
@@Mizu2023 the max safe number is 9007199254740992 in doubles

@@tristantheoofer2 I've reached a bit over a quadrillion studs by doing what @xdkristofsaltacc described, I know that's how far I was because I used a coordinate map.
the glitches caused by stupid amounts of floating point precision loss have always been fascinating to me, i wonder if it's even possible for a game to be immune to this (maybe by using an integer or a long for coordinates? though that would add a hard limit before the world wraps around which also isn't good)
no its impossible for it to be immune unless you use bigdecimal or some shit which is really fuckin laggy anyway
@@tristantheoofer2 if you just use integers (which lack decimal places at all and aren't subjected to issues that floats have) then there's no way to have floating point errors like this, but then the drawback is that the size of the area has to be very small
i believe there are some games which do precisely that, but they're few and far between
@@ChromaNyan yeah bc some games just... dont need that precision. tho yeah you ARE limited to abt 9223372036854775808 in each direction
you could just move the world and not the player (so the tris only break far away from the origin point)
@@someoneidk3358 while this would work, it would immediately stop working if you wanted to make it multiplayer, and physics calculations would also likely end up being weird
The reason your character is teleported to at this number at 8:44 is not a coincidence. This number is the 32 bit integer limit, you are teleported here because all integer values in lua are 32-bit integers. (I believe they are always handled this way because 64-bit integers were only added as a subtype in lua 5.3, while luau is based on lua 5.1). So it's not actually the game's physics engine that is causing you to teleport there, instead, it is the script that is teleporting you there that causes you to teleport at the 32-bit integer limit.
so what i think personally is that the 32 bit float changed back to a 32 bit integer to prevent a crash. would that make sense?
Yeah but the positions are 32bit floating point numbers where you have 24 bits to represent something and you can put a "decimal" dot in anywhere using the exponent, exponent also multiplies the result by 2 to the power of the exponent
I've reached extremely far once and accidentally discovered the floating point. I originally called it the null zone (back then i was 7 I didn't know much but I have experienced all of these different variations of the floating point and once when I was like 11 I got to the furthest point where my screen was flashing black and white and then just turned to darkness and that was it. I was so freaked out back then)

i once did a glitch to go to the null zone and got addicted to trying it in every game possible, i just watched as i became flat, then turned to a bunch of squares, then triangles, then became one single triangle, back to a square, and then just left reality and disappeared
(edit) also i think it depends on hardware or the game, cuz i never had my camera refuse to work nor the skybox ever become black in the many many times i've gone to the null zone
How did you do the glitch?
if your camera never have or the skybox didnt turn black you didnt go to 2147483647 atleast. you probs went fucking ridiculously far, like 131 million, but not far enough for any real issues to occur :P
how did you do that?
Same with the Nimbus emote, it's fun to do it.
I wonder if floating point error can be used as a retro effect in Roblox.
It reminds me of old pre-2000 games where computer hardware was still very limited so some games were very jittery and had their polygons and triangles always snap to some rounded position.
actually that would be pretty cool

hi. I dont know why but i also have an addiction into diving deep into numbers and that wierd shit. Ive watched all these types of videos and it makes me rethink my life choices. Im also working on a video on floating point so you gained a new sub! :)
i managed to get to 67 million stud stage of glitching (level 7 in your video) in the game build a boat for treasure somehow! it was really fun discovering this floating point zone myself, simply putting hundreds of rocket thrusters together and launching myself into oblivion
lol that actually sounds like a pretty awesome time
not sure if it was just a mistake, but they don't overflow its that as it gets bigger they can show less numbers. so when your at 0,0 it can be within 1/2^127 units, but as you go further out that main chunk of 23 bits isn't enough to make it smooth anymore so a tiny change in it could move you from 1/2^127 units, to a full unit or more.
also congrats on beating cancer :>
edit: I need to get into the habit of watching the video before trying to correct the intro 💀
um, acsktually, it's because floating point to integer conversion is really scuffed - it's why computers think 1+1=2.000000000000000000003. Basically, there's pretty much no exact integer values as the precision decreases in a strange way the further away from 0 you get, that's why it's called floating point (the decimal point is 'floating'). This also happens in geometry dash, where the numbers get so large that the next floating point number is more than one away.
how does it happen in geometry dash?
@@tristantheoofer2this is actually pretty funny. But yeah, it happens in gd. And it's kinda the same. You reach a point where the BG starts flashing, the icon gets distorted, and you cannot move.

'Well, this has an explanation of why it exists... But this happened with the avatar display window when customizing my avatar. It was absolutely bizarre effects that could go well with any horror game that uses the phobia of being deleted.
Like, the face was divided in a repeating pattern of triangles that interlock and connect to one another, most of the arms, legs and back accessories extended into long strands with smaller strands branching off of it.
The only visible part of my character during the time was the word "Glitch" which was on one of the accessories that go over my avatar's face. Everything that wasn't the glitch accessory glitched in and out of existence as I slowly spun it.
That glitch then stopped as I refreshed the page... But I will not forget about the screenshot I took of it. Such maddening patterns, such eldritch design... Not even my digital art of mine is capable of replicating the same unfathomable shapes that this glitch created.
Maybe glitches can also be a way of art as chaos is. ' - Chrome

2:30 reaching that limit by walking in the default speed (16 studs per second) will take more than a 1 day and a half
simple explanation: float numbers (decimal numbers) have a certain limit of digits (the float point) and when the number reaches that limit the float gets less precise (so less decimal number digits) lets say we have a float variable of 63.999 and the float limit is 64.000 so when the float variable goes over that limit it doesn’t become 64.001 but 64.00, so the xyz positions of polygons in the 3d models start getting rounded off to higher and higher numbers, eventually not even being decimal and rounding numbers like 9283183 (just an example number) to 9283000
this has happened to me in nico's nextbots before, if you use the developer gun and you right click while looking down after jumping you literally get sent flying up into the sky, when that happened to me, the first person body was all glitchy and then my character died.
damn thats impressive

I once got the skybox flickering glitch in one game and didn't understand why it happened (I knew about the floating point zone but not about the skybox glitch) and apparently I managed to get flung a trillion studs away from spawn. Nice
i learned later it was 34 billion after some other guy in the commented abt it lol. tested it and yeah. so you got atleast 34 BILLION studs. thats still really fucking impressive tho
One time, I flung myself so high that the skybox turned completely black, my health turned negative AND I had to restart the instance TWICE, JUST for it to continue being normal (remember that this was in Roblox Studio)
I know I'm late, but I know there's a glitch that features this on Work at a Pizza Place. However, it requires a car and for you to equip the gravity coil whilst driving said car. If you exit the car while still holding the gravity coil, you'll fly up. It'll be a while, but you can go past Roblox's floating point zone and be reduced to literally nothing.
ye someone else said smth like this and i had no idea how to do it. so ty! also i think the reason it does what it does is that the momentum from the car carries over, but since the actual gravity bit is set to almost 1 already BEFORE that (because thats how it works, i think it takes your height and multiplies it by some constant) it rolls over 1 which means you dont hit the ground and dont even go towards it lmao

this commonly might happen if it has something to do mostly with collision, examples like dashing into a wall, you might fling yourself heavily (if it is a strong dash) but not as much power to reach the floating point.
yeah its happened to me before when i was playing get hit by a speeding wall lol
pov: your roblox character is slowly entering a black hole
yeah real lmao
@@tristantheoofer2 lol
Minecraft: We are the best because we have the farlands!
Roblox: Are you sure about that?
nah fr but minecrafts also got the skybox killing itself in a way better manner lmao
Mc also has different types of “far lands” across versions (i.e the stripe lands on bedrock)
@scout7160 yep i know that and they actually exist in java too (at 2^53 instead of 2^24) but i didnt think they were worth mentioning in my other video :P
oh and the infdev stone wall stuff too. honestly i may make a history if minecrafts farlands video after im done making the one thats going up around next week
@@jakfjfrgneibedrock did actually have the actual farlands until 1.17.20, when mojang just decided to fix it out of the random, but the stripe lands still exist, alongside the dot lands (corner stripe lands)
i used to get into the floating point zone a bunch in classic neverland lagoon, apparently is was the perfect formula to get flung a lot
Thanks for finally letting me know what this is. Been wondering for years.
np my man
ace flag spotted
indeed now pls give me a lifetime supply of garlic bread and chocolate cake
I actually reached the part where the skybox started flashing black over and over again and then my health went to zero but i didnt hear the rocket launcher sound but then after that happend it crashed and then i havent experienced it since for a month now
what's the silly little game you played with th weird grid biomes and cars in it? also, amazing work from one small creator to another
I Liked and subscribed bro, thank you
thank you my dude :D next vids droppin on the 14th btw if you were interested
When i was 9 at 2018 i thought other games would be inside very very very far lol
The ace desire to burn everything to the ground (except garlic bread)
(and cake)
@@tristantheoofer2 of course
A bug idk if it it is fixed or not in Plane crazy, if you open parachute on pilot seat on a simple fast flying object, the object will sometimes glitch out to a point where the sky becomes black and object along with player will disappear completely.
This video was on my birthday!
Also btw whats that first game called with the little car?
yooo happy birthday my guy. anyways the game is called drive forever (its linked in the pinned comment :P)
@@tristantheoofer2 thanks bro!
farlands
roblox edition
real. more like the stripelands tho
i like the ace flag on your avatar
lmao thanks. im aroace btw
i find the things that happen after you reach the roblox actual limit really interesting, i would really like to see what happens to the character when geta killed on that point of the game, and also the rocket launcher sfx makes it even weirder, like why is it there? who thought on add it there? is it a glitch on the game that forces to play that specific sound? i find it fascinating
i actually found that sadly it was some sound in a model i used my game and didnt notice... yeah. tho you absolutely still die afaik
This guy deserves more subs. Now I know what happens when I get flung in the air
I experienced this once when I was playing be crushed by a speeding wall, I got glinted and instead of dying my character looked all glitchy, it was pretty freaking cool.
holy shit i had that exact thing happen to me like 5 years ago lol
@@tristantheoofer2 same I think it happens back in either 2016 or 2018 I think that game was made in 2016.
ok
bro this happens to me all the time, whenever i get flung i turn into triangles lol
lol nice
the coordonates roblox teleport after going above the limit is the Integer Limit, the maximum number that's can be stored on 32 bits
That is why big games like PTFS is very small and the map is a size of a baseplate. An even larger game like aeronautica have no issues even when the map isn’t even a size of a baseplate the only broken is the objects
makes sense yeah. also whats ptfs?
In lt2 I flinged myself with the new bluesteel axe and I could notice myself shaking with my camera fully put very bad
There's null zones in lots of games, even Geometry Dash. But I personally think Roblox's is the most fun seeing as how easily accessible it is.
theres a null zone in EVERY game actually. it just depends if you can break out of bounds lol
yup
@@tristantheoofer2 it depends on if the game uses floating point numbers or not
ITS IN GEOMETRY DASH??
Its funny tought, that it always happends to me in nautral disaster especially in the earthquakes since you get throw like so fast that in SECONDS your character bugs and then u die
Things like this in roblox occurs mainly in streaming enabled games, it will be a bit different without it.
7:37
hahaha i know where you got this sound effect
One time in build a boat I reached a trillion or more studs when the skybox was completely black using the infinite gold grinder with 2 players after 1 died, I was able to reach this point SOMEHOW, like complete pitch black or I couldn't notice the flash of the skybox.
how da fuck??? no you probably were ACTUALLY at 1 trillion by then bc i later found that the skybox issue was at 34 billion. still. what tf
@@tristantheoofer2 lol so since the skybox issue was at about 34B as you said, mightve been 500B, 100B or yeah probably 1 trillion no shit
@@TheActualDried yeah seriously thats cracked
The visual glitches happen because the position data of triangles on the player model(and also other things) get rounded because of float inaccuracies.
yes they indeed do
I have a weird irrational phobia of glitches, distorted sprites, the out-of-bounds. which makes me INSANELY terrified of the null zone
where was the elipsy warning at 1 trillion studs
6:03 ive been there before it was in plane crazy
Do you know the game Space Sailors on Roblox? On that game, you explore space. To-scale. Since you need to get to a height of 300 km in order to get into orbit, you can really notice the things seen in the video. Fortunately, the moon, Mars, etc. are different game places, but since they are all to scale too, getting back to space from them means suffering from floating point error.
Also, there is a challenge to spend 3 real days to traverse the 384000 km to the moon. Your ship will dissapear and you'll stop moving after many thousands of km.
yeah i do and ive actually tried getting to the moon legit before lol. got 5-6 hours in before it crashed
there’s a bug in a game i play called “ability wars”. It’s like slap battles blah blah but there’s gloves that teleport you to a dimension. One of the dimensions is so far from the base island that if you use shiftlock your character becomes slightly offset.
so is it like barely offset or a lot? bc that makes a massive fuckin difference
always wondered why the floating point eixsted
Someone gotta make a game around journeying out to reach the other side of the null zone.
I would play the everloving hell out of that.
like they start at 0 and trek all the way out? that sounds like an amazing concept actually
Nice video. Reminds me of Mario 64 madness. Hope there's other game videos like this
i actually may make a video on breaking sm64 in the same way as in roblox lol. bc honestly its far more interesting than just a few small bugs
@@tristantheoofer2 here's hoping for 0 A pressed!
arent we down to literally half an a press now?
0:10 once in iloilo flight sim we somehow flung the plane so hard that this was the entire screen effect and all the passengers and crew had to reset
POV: Your legs after sitting on the toilet for too long
me when i get out of bed in the morning:
7:16 that’s a bit limit. 2147483647 is the largest number bags can handle. -2147483648 is the smallest possible number in Java. I am definitely not an expert so if you know better you can just correct me and I will learn more knowledge. (Definitely a grammar mistake)
its the 32 bit integer, its 2^31-1, so roblox engine prob uses 32 bit integer, it also happens in more games something with 32 bit integer, usually a limit of a number, like the powder toy, the max u can set the temperature of a particle is the 32 bit integer, if u try 1 more it goes to negative
oh damn, i didnt know the whole time the rocket explosion sound plays when you reach y nan axis, considering i keep my volume off most of the time in roblox and i sometimes messed with commands in my games with friends
8:47 , this is similar when reaching the 64 bit limit in some simulator games (example: Arm wrestling simulator)
It warps your stat back to -64 bit limit
