So I was planning on commenting on how much I love the intros to your Halloween episodes, but this episode has so many even nicer things going for it like more dedicated time on other cards you bring up with effective fly-ins that I just really adore it. Thank you for making this!
You’ve done a wonderful presentation on every episode you have touched on. Great editing (it only gets better with every video), fantastic library of mathematics for cards, and just an all around amazing recollection of magic history. This game is great and I’m thankful that someone has the admiration of the game to spend their personal time cataloguing the history of the game. Patronizing.
I never noticed this before but it's bugging me that the trees don't line up with the gaps between the columns, you'd think orderly white practitioners would want things to be more... orderly.
I worked with the voice actor who read that line, Tom Schalk, on my previous animation for Slimetfoot and just came up with that line as I was asking if he was available to record something and it just stuck. I rarely nail that sort of thing on the first try, but it's so catchy.
You heard it here first: After creatures to bring back from the graveyard and graveyard hate the next week is about "protection from graveyard hate"! :D On a more serious note: Top 10 cards to FILL the graveyard?

I like the idea of two people with graveyard focused decks both playing leyline of the void first turn. Then they what, try to kill each other with a couple 1/1 zombie tokens or something lol
good video as always, but there's at least a couple of editing gaffes that I noticed. 2 takes of "and in past octobers, I've looked at reanimation spells" at the beginning of the video. Surgical Extraction is also listed at #8 by the video graphic.
Also worth pointing out that Grafdigger's Cage prevents creatures from entering the battlefield from libraries. This was relevant in Standard because it was in the same Standard format as Birthing Pod. It also translated to Modern where Pod was a powerhouse. When Pod was banned, it was still useful as a way to stop Collected Company. Versatile card for 1 mana.
Incidental graveyard hate is one of the best things on a card. It lets you put a card that would normally have to be a sideboard card in your mainboard, letting you completely shut down a certain deck type. It's a little like having a lifegain deck and going up against red aggro. You're going to be gaining the life anyway, it's just what your deck wants to do, but you're able to completely destroy that matchup.
I know it's the 3rd time you used it, but I really love that opening. When you make a transition to show a referenced card (4:05), you could make it a bit faster, it's a bit distracting.
I actually own most of these adn use several of them in my Anafenza commander deck. Admittedly the graveyard hate is in fact a minor part of the deck but still.
Ooze really should have qualified for this list. I get it with deathrite cause hes usually just a mana dork but the whole point of ooze is to eat the grave
True, but at the end of the day all the exclusions meant is that we saw 14 cards rather than 10. If anything that makes it even more useful as an informational resource.

It's always bothered me how black is the color that both pulls things out of the graveyard and deletes the graveyard. I've always felt like removing a graveyard was more of a white or possible green effect.
While I'd agree cards like DRS and Anafenza are just efficient/beater creatures, Scavenging Ooze's sole reason to exist in decks is to hate on graveyards. As a 2/2 that sometimes merely gets 1 bigger for 1 mana, it is neither more efficient than most black Shades nor a beater on its own. It is absolutely graveyard hate and is usually added to green decks/sideboards solely to combat a graveyard-heavy meta. Edit: While I love the concept of the new animations, some are a little messy in execution. At 5:26 you have the 4th extra card appear to the right of the main card in question, while at 6:23 you have the 4th extra card replace one of the first 3. It'd be nicer to have the same 'rules' apply to all animations, else it comes off as a little hectic and confused.
@@fullmetalpwn Gaining 1 life if the opponent happens to have a creature in a graveyard, in a non-graveyard-centric deck is definitely not enough reason to run it in non-graveyard-centric metas, though. It's not useful enough to run it on its own, compared to the other cards on that list, unless you want it as something which negates graveyard decks. You'd be better off running a cheap spell (as in cheaper per life gained) that instantly gains more life, if an aggro-centric meta is your problem.
@@letsmakeit110 It is also far more conditional against non-graveyard decks, maybe getting up to 4 or 5 extra power in a normal game rather than "just however much free mana you have on a turn, which you wouldn't be using anyway". So the two are roughly comparable, though I never said "It is a shade" in the first place. I said it isn't more efficient since it requires an extra cost, and requires a specific sort of deck to be good against: Ones which dump a lot of creatures into the graveyard, and the reason you'd want to remove those is more the graveyard shenangians than to make the Ooze bigger in the first place. i.e. It is a graveyard hater.

I'm curious, did any of the points from Rest in Peace come from an Helm of Obedience deck, or is that deck just too fringe to have made any points in Legacy?
My personal favorite is Night Soil. Since removing creatures from the graveyard, the opponent can not react to it and it produces creatures as a side effect.

@@NizzahonMagic cards like Cyclonic Rift and Vandalblast have Overload. Instead of hitting one target it hits all the targets it can. The reminder text is (You can cast this spell for its overload cost. If you do, change its text by replacing all instances of "Target" with "Each"). It was big in Return to Ravnica and was last used in the Modern Horizons set.

Magic... and by layering the art in Photoshop, repainting the bit behind the skull and then just wiggling it up and down. Also many years of experience as a professional motion graphics artist didn't hurt. It's based purely on the amount of times it's seen play over its existence, rather than the qualities of the cards. It is an important card, but it is not necessarily the most played graveyard hate.

I disagree. Nihil is a straight up Latin word, so I pronounced it the way it would be said in Latin. Nihilist is an Anglicized Latin word because of the suffix, so it doesnt operate by the same rules.
I'm still working on tuning it a bit. I got a little motion sick myself with the camera at the beginning but I didn't have time to change it, unfortunately. Thanks for letting me know! It's gonna take me a few to find the happy balance between polish and too flashy.
@@MythicTales I'll give more specific feedback. The part with Deathrite Shaman was particularly disorienting. The camera was moving too much for me. Otherwise, the backgrounds were cool. Once a card is on screen/revealed/flipped over, it probably shouldn't move because it doesn't feel good to read moving text. I'm referring to the slight up and down movement it has.
@@bastokrepublic Yep, I feel ya there. I'm definitely not doing the shaky cam again, that was honestly even making me feel ill, and I'll give not having the cards hover once they've settled a try. It's a nice effect for giving a bit of motion to the scene, but I agree, not good for reading.
