The first negative review I've seen on this knife. I watched several reviews when this knife first hit the market and everyone was outraged at the 'stolen' design, but loved it. Your review was spot on. I had not noticed those things about the knife. I too am glad HF is upping it's knife game; however, your suggestion better matches the purpose of a work knife. I'm probably going to pass on the knife as it does not match my use case.

We have a problem in the UK. ALL lock out blades (regardless of length) are illegal to carry, even in a toolbag in the trunk of your car. We have some VERY extreme legislation on knives. Now - to me that's insane & stupid, but it is the law here.

So I have this knife and yeah I agree with you on a lot of the points that you made, that said I don't really view this as a work knife more of a kinda decent knife for when I leave the house. Not a knife for fancy occasions, or work, but it's nice enough to carry out on the town when you want something that's not intimidating, but not danty either. Honestly it feels like a cross between civivi and Kershaw but fancy...ish ?

I carry a benchmade mini griptilian 1/2 serrated every day. I used to carry the kerahaw 2335. I like a skinny blade. The benchmade somehow has a similar angle w a wider blade. I kind of want to get the icon to keep in the car for a travel cheese knife. I have a Kai paring knife but I wanted something for cheese for travel because I don’t take my shun knives w me

Carried this knife for a week or two. The knife itself worked fine, I actually like it. However, the pocket clip is junk, already bent.

I bought the harbor freight knife. I gave it away a week later.
I agree the materials seem to be good quality but the shape is terrible. The curve of the handle makes it uncomfortable for me to hold and the blade is angled down so it feels awkward to use

Interesting to note that they keep these by the gold plated ratchets and not by all the other knives. I don’t think it’s intended as a work/utility knife. Personally, I really enjoy “form over function” tools like this that just look and feel nice.

I’ve used the icon knife for quite awhile now. I love the big flipper and blade lock when my hands are covered in oil or wet. Makes it easy to use. The pocket clip is trash though especially the angle it’s at.

Looks like it was designed to thumb flip maybe? Mechanics seem to use utility knives most in my experience. The Milwaukee 48-23-1505 being the best (I know you have one).

Glad you made a vid on this! It is a edc work knife, I’m a sparky so I have a flipper utility blade knife for stripping large wire and when I know I’m going to be cutting on or into metal and this knife is for everything else. I just wish the spine was a 1/8” thicker - d2 steel is OK at taking and keeping an edge, but for a $32 (which I paid 6/7 months ago). I just feel the look is a very specific design with the red circular accents around the frame buttons and the “faux” carbon fiber - BUT, lifetime warranty, and I’ve done it once already

Thank you Doc for your review. I have seen this knife in the store and each time I ask myself... should I?...should I not? Your review was helpful because it pointed out a few things I was not aware of that would drive me nuts...the clip geometry as well as the size of the assist. Good looking knife, but after seeing your review I think I will save my money.

Nice objective review....not some fan boy gush over a $40 knife. The reviews I've seen so far were basically written before the package was even opened. There are so many good knives available from knife makers, I just don't have a need to explore offerings from tool manufacturers. I'm not a knife snob, but I do appreciate the details that make a good knife, many of which you pointed out in this vid.

I’ve enjoyed it, but the one big downside for me is that terrible clip. It’s so darn stiff. I took mine off and sanded down the edges.

I bent mine really bad at work last week, almost took it in for warranty replacement, but decided to hammer the clip flat and rock it until it breaks before replacing it.

Ah the struggle of trying to get some popular tool at HF in Montana. The one near me is literally always out of the most popular items, which really sucks when you’re trying to warranty something. If it’s a one off I’ll go buy at Home Depot or Lowe’s cause I know they’ll have it then and probably again in 8 months when I break it

GM Doc, I want to know your opinion. I got into collecting knives when I was a teen but never had more than 10/15 at a time. Now I’m
Older and make good money I have been into the $40-$65 range of knives - so Covivi, CRJB,Gerber, Kershaw, CRKT, Sencut, Kubey, Böker and Kizer, etc.
I would LOVE a Spyderco Para2 or a basic benchmade (the one everyone has) - I have been stuck to D2, AuS8 and 440A/C, etc steels. What is your opinion on the best $40-$65 range of folding knives. Best edc all around - looked into the Oknives but they can get
    Up there either way.
I am not araid of spending up to $80 if it means I’ll get a great knife I can not worry about sharpening every other day LOL.
Just would love your opinion? Would you be willing to make a video on it?!?
Keep up the tool gods work my dude!

I agree with every single one of your points about the knife. The review comes off a little "anti-HF" but I've come to know you better than that. The knife was clearly designed by someone who doesn't carry a knife everyday as on paper I'm sure the design elements look reasonable. Everything from the lack of pocket clip flex, overly stiff detent, lack of thumb stud or thumb cutout back up that claim. Now I get that this is a relatively cheap knife but at this price point there are much better options such as Kershaw, CRKT and Spiderco to name a few. Sure they will be in the lower end of those companies product lines but then you get a knife from a company who has been incorporating years of feedback into their designs. This feels like an ameraturish entry into a market with little to no prior research. Everyone starts somewhere so I'm hopeful that they learn from this and come out with a better product in the future.

I think a knife is a very personal thing. Would I buy that one NO I have lots of knifes and most of them are of the same shape and style because that's what I like I have at least 2 on me at all times incase I'm kidnapped. Great review Doc.

The thing is most of the things that you're complaining about as design "flaws" would be considered good features for mechanics who wear nitrile gloves and just need a quick knife to cut open packaging.
Those gloves giving the user less feel, less finger dexterity, and extra friction dry yet also less friction when oily almost necessitates those larger and easier to find engagement points.

I agree with every single one of your points. The review felt a little "Anti-HF" but have come to know you better than that. This is clearly a case of a product being designed by a person/group that do not carry pocket knives. I imagine the design elements seem to work on paper but the lack of pocket clip flex, overly stiff detent, lack of thumb stud or thumb hole support the fact the designer(s) have little experience in this segment. While I do understand this is a relatively cheap knife, and some things can be overlooked, there are much better offerings by companies like Kershaw, CRKT, and even Spiderco. Sure you would be looking at the lowest level of knifes from those companies, but you would be getting a knife that is coming from a company that has refined their designs over years of feedback. This Icon knife feels like an amateurish entry to the knife market with no prior market research. At the end of the day I hope that HF can take this product an improve upon it and ultimately develop a knife that is more functional.

I always remove all pocket clips, but I wasn't tempted by the knife even without that. I have an old cheap Dewalt knife, and I've always been perfectly happy with that. My edc is the smallest lightest little knife I could find to go on my keyring.
