Roebuck Roadhouse Road Trains Broome, Australia 2019

  • Roebuck Plains Roadhouse is a legendary road house about 35 kilometres from the town of Broome. It's located at the junction of the Great northern Highway which runs from Perth to Kununurra. The road house is a favourite for drivers as it offers top class food, good service and clean showers.
The drivers of the cattle road trains had just taken a break for a meal and shower after unloading, before heading out to the bush for another load of cattle at daylight the following day. The Toll truck in the video is probably heading towards Darwin from Perth.

I rode my motorcycle round Australia in 1983 and stayed a night at the Roebourne caravan park. The locals were arguing all night, never felt more afraid in my tent.

Is there a limit in lenght? Do you have any reversing shots in OZ? Reversing, that's a great skill. I work as a shunter and spend my life reversing. Tnx Paul.

Different length limits depending where you are Brian. These ones are at the maximum of 53.5 although there are mega quad side tippers running at up to about 60 metres on designated routes with permits. Very little reversing with these John, all side loading. Plenty of reversing B-Doubles (two points of articulation - easy), occasional reversing with prime mover, two trailers and one dolly (three points or articulation - tricky the first time you try it but regularly done to reconnect the third trailer of a triple road train) as well as B triples (three points of articulation). Reversing with more than three points of articulation is something you won't see. Don't think I have any videos, must have a look though. Thanks!

Pretty sure I had a 2 page spread poster on my bedroom wall back in the early 90's from Truck & Driver of the RTA cattle road train. Probably 94 or 95? Just had a flashback 😅

I must have missed that one Keith (and I bought most of the magazines!). It wasn't a Tanami poster by any chance???

@@Paulo660 it's a long time ago, possible 😂 I was 8 at the time. Thought it had that colour scheme 🤔. Ask Dougie to have a look when he is sitting in the office "editing" 😜

Good video. Do you know why they don't have super single tyres on the trailers.

Tri axle group with Super Singles limited to carry 15t, tri group with dual tyres can load to 20t. More tyres more load.

Drivers have to change their own wheels due to the remoteness of the work. Punctures/blow outs can at times be frequent due to factors such as off road conditions and high temperatures. Changing a ten stud super single on your own is very strenuous, whereas changing the ones you see here is much easier; way lighter rims and the 5 wheels nuts holding the rim via clamps to the hubs on the trailers don't need to be torqued as much as the 10 stud system. In 15 minutes you could change a wheel without the need for air/power tools or even breaking a sweat. The disadvantage is that it's very difficult to get the "wobble" out of them, hence why most prime movers now use 10 studs for safety and maximum tyre wear, whereas trailers may be running the old style.
