In print for nearly sixty years, The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle are recognized as classics, and their author, Franklin argues in her comprehensive biography of Shirley Jackson (1916-1965), deserves to be seen as a major American writer. Drawing on extensive interviews and previously unknown correspondence, Franklin, a book critic and former Guggenheim fellow, traces Jackson’s life through a troubled childhood and difficult marriage. Franklin reads Jackson’s fiction as a response to these personal demons as well as a reflection of the repressive post-war years, showing how Jackson took the American Gothic she inherited from Poe and Hawthorne and transformed it to her own brand of “domestic horror.”

My middle-school (referred to as "junior high" back then) drama class staged "The Lottery" when I was in 8th grade (1966/67). I didn't make the cast cut--I was appointed the stage manager. Apparently, the drama teach felt I was more bossy than talented. She probably ruined what would have been an otherwise brilliant career on stage, in films and on television.
