Wonderful Jackson magic and mystery. Though I’m left with questions about what actually happened and what it all means, her use of mythological archetypes and symbols creates an indelible mark of unease and intuitive distress. Her story The Witch creeped me out the same way, and it was set in much less of a fairytale-like setting. She was such a master at frightening our subconscious, even when the story was about seemingly familiar and commonplace characters and situations.
Interesting slant. Jackson has always seemed to me to be about, not escape, but more about the cost of escape. Now I have to think again. Maybe it is fear of endings. Just this past year I have suddenly begun to feel like I'm running out of time. For most of my life I've felt the weight of time unfilled, and not enough with which to fill it. Not enough money, love, meaning, hope, etc; plenty of work, though that didn't count for much it turned out. Now I'm here in my version of a "hall bedroom". I suppose that could be seen as a fear of endings. Thanks for the insight! Just what I needed. Insight is so interesting, but ultimately, useless. 😊
I am not sure about the good security. It seems that one day, Christopher himself will be replaced, the same way he now replaced Mr Oaks, as the three people in the house seemed to know exactly what was happening, as it had happened before.
@@WindyNightStories but the measurements on the wall, the traveler who had a dog(he was killed), what are the records? Circe was a Greek witch, who is Phyllis? I need to talk to Shirley.
@@ropeburnsrussell haha, I must admit my knowledge of mythology is weak. I thought the traveler does not always defeat and replace the man in the woods, though Circe and Phyllis either want, or somehow know, Christopher will be successful. The measurements on the wall are record of those who have tried and failed as they all wait for the right one to come, just as the current man in the woods was finally the one who defeated the previous record keeper and began waiting for his eventual replacement and rest.

A classic Shirley Jackson tale, a lot is left for the reader to interpret, which makes the story more enchanted and more scary
Shirley Jackson wonderful! Thank you Mr Windy
Great author, great reader.
And so the mantle is passed...

She seems eternally afraid of endings. A relatable condition from my own view. It took me many years to come to this sor

Oh my god. This was extremely well written. The freaking implications.
TY So Much 4 this Channel.
Who doesn't like 2 be Read To, am I right.
Strange story. An adult fairytale 🎉
This story terrifies me more than any other!
😳
Sounds like Christopher walked into a job with good security. Thanks Mr. Windy!

@@neliaferreira9983 I meant it tongue in cheek, but yes I agree.
Love this channel!
I have never been left with so many questions.
This story actually frustrates me, why did she end it here?
To leave me with questions, that's why.
My interpretation was that, as his cat replaced Grimalkin, he would defeat the old man and become the man in the woods.

Very well read :) But weird ending! What’s the point? Mankind is totally treacherous and can’t be trusted?
That was hard work, not one of her best
That was weird!
Always a treat. Thank you.
