i have planted sweeet peas for the 1st time this year. im so excited to grow them this year! i was so worried about growing them with a young child as she will walk throiught the allotment/garden and eat freely. now she is older and we have a flower garden ill pop them in there and im much less worried about growing them.
my secret weapon for sweet peas is ... I save all the bread ties. lol. But it works for me. I grow them in April and they grow up the side of my house and bloom June through the first snow in North Dakota. It is weird that people do not sell them in the green houses here, because they do amazing!
Great vid. The secret is basically irrigation, as you pointed out. Water, water, water all the time. Mine are growing up a cylinder shape I made out of bamboo with chicken wire wrapped around. I give them a 6 litre can of water every other day, and that does the trick. Any let up at all in the watering regime, and the sweet peas immediately begin to sulk. Bearing in mind that I am in damp west Wales, on a moisture retaining clay-ish soil, it shows how thirsty they are. It must be impossible to grow them in beds on sandy soil in, say, East Anglia.
It's often done for showing purposes, so that the stems stay straight, rather than becoming entwined. As you can see the lady in the video then has to use the tie-rings to support the plants. Cutting the tendrils can be quite labour intensive and many people don't bother but just focus on the dead-heading and cutting.
Hi Sonia, I pinch the tendrils to try and concentrate the growing on a main stem. The tendrils, turn into another branch which flowers. If you restrict the number of "flowering branches" then you will get longer and stronger flowers rather than lots of small ones. Also, it doesn't get into such a tangled mess. I'm not anal about it, but I try and pinch out as many as I can. Hope this helps.
Sweet peas are thirsty and hungry. So make sure you water regularly and I also dig a shallow trench which I fill with with well rotted manure before planting. This helps give them the nutrition they need. Hope this helps.
They need lots of food (in my case they are planted in a trench of well rotted manure). They also need lots of water! Hungry and greedy plants. They also love sunshine!
They are a spencer variety, the plants are in a trench of well rotted manure and also is one of the few areas in the garden with drip irrigation. They need plenty of water.
Apologies for missing this comment. Sweet peas are hardy, so they do actually withstand some frost. (difficult to believe when you see their delicate flowers). I hope you have had some luck.
I didnt cut my flowers and they have grown something that seems to be a edible pea and there is like little colour green bugs or something and dont know if that's edible or if that means it poisoned. Do I have to cut them now? Is not okay if I let them grow to much?
The green bugs are green fly. Keep the plants healthy and they should be strong enough to ride the green fly storm. I have helpers here (ladybirds are great at eating aphids)
Very occasionally I may give a liquid seaweed feed. Or a foliar feed of similar. However, as I provide a trench of muck for them to grow in, and cut regularly they seem to grow well for several months.

Yes, sweet peas die back in winter because they are an annual plant. However, sowing fresh in the autumn (in the UK) or spring will bring you a fresh crop.

Absolutely - I also think the trench of farmhouse manure makes a huge difference.
The pea, Is it edible? I didn't cut the flower and it produce some pea.
