Most of the time I was sailing the southern ocean in my Chatham 33', steel, cutter it was cold and overcast, and of course, the wind and seas so it was nice to have a pilothouse to keep me out of the weather and a bullet proof windvane (Sailomat) for steering. It allowed me to spend very little time on deck. I also used mostly just a poled out staysail or if the wind let up a little, I'd unfurled some jib. It was an awesome sailing challenge especially since I was singlehanded and had no long range communication equipment. I didn't see any other boats during the passage from Saldana, S. Africa to Tonga until I was north of New Zealand.
Thanks, nice to hear Sailomat is bulletproof, I got a year ago 1975 Schelinkryssare with Sailomat 601, learning to use it, can you perhaps recommend some books or videos of Sailomat 601, thank you Esko, Finland, sy Evelina
How adjusted with the tiny-boat to mad waves of the ocean by the Brave Captain and camera man l feel tense and my body responses with the motions of the boat.Thanks....
What is the benefit of a partly furled jib being set rather than a reefed mainsail? I would have thought that the main would have reduced roll and kept the canter of force lower and closer to the center of the boat and reduce the chance of pitch poling. Of course you know your stuff, this is not a criticism, I am just posing the question in order to learn. Thanks
This is good, thank you for posting! Still doesn't top Christian William's crossing video. No matter, this is a great offering for the rest of us who live this vicariously!
Tremendous Passage my friend! Congrats for that!! I have two questions: 1. Sailboat? and the Second What are you using the Spy Pole for and how do you determine the side of the boat? thanks!!
Un post de carma interior si un sistem automat radio de "om la apa"care sa coboare velele instantaneu coborarea carmelor ar fi ideal. Sa stati co toții impreuna înauntru. Cu multă stima, Petru Răzvan. PS. Mai bine incercați mari mai calme data viitoare!
I love sailing, but if I was out there, within twenty minutes I'd bitterly regret the decision, and despise every second of the Southern Ocean experience.
@Walter Strong, the chances are slim and strongly depend on the actions of the crew onboard. For best chances there need to be drills and the crew needs a lot of experience with handling man-overboard situation in rough seas.
D-le Albu primitiv din partea mea cel Mai profund respect. Vito Dumas, an Argentine single-handed sailor, on 27 June 1942, , he set out on a single-handed circumnavigation of the Southern Ocean. He left Buenos Aires in June, sailing LEHG II, a 31-foot ketch. There are other famous sailors who sailed in the roaring forties in small boats... Anyway who said that this boat is a 30 footer? There is no reference in the video. Probably is a 35.
All Due Respect Sir,, Thanks for the Awesome Natural Video without any music,, just the sounds of the ocean and the boat..!!
Nice, no crazy music, just the sound of the wind and water, as it should be.

Respect! Absolute stunning!
Thanks for the raw footage , no stupid music, just the wind and the waves .(And what waves they where)
Thumbs up for leaving live sound of the sea & wind : this adds dramatically to the video
I love this! The sea is just crazy! Absolutely amazing , love the natural sound too!
Fantastic, pouring along, and just with the jib poled out. Huge seas coming up from astern. I couldn't look back.
Nice to see.Thank you. Take care where ever you are!! 😀👋
Amazing you are very brave sir. Where some people scared to enter in silent sea.
Tiny boat. Brave sailor. Great camera angles.
A very tiny boat, I'd say. How big is it?
I bow down before your awesomeness.
Brilliantly done guys and no silly music ❤️🇬🇧
Now that my friend , is real sailing 👍
No, he is motoring. 🇦🇺
Not a stich of canvas up case you had not noticed
You are crazy lol going with that tiny boat in the southern ocean. And looking also chilled
You have my respect! Great video too.
Great video thanks for not putting in any terrible "sailing" music. Just wind and water!!!
Marius sunteti fenominali! Căutam de mult timp români de ai noștri curajoși pe mare!❤🇷🇴
Acha
Great..not easy to film in such conditions...nice remember to me...50 knots I did!!
Wow I don’t think I’d have the skiff stowed quite like that. I had one washed clean off once..
Wow. Serious water there. Great sailing, boys.
agree with Gus, no music ! just beautiful sailing !
Bravo ! No crazy music just sea...!!!
nothing better than a bit of surfing in a well found yacht , now matter what size , well done.
I went to Antarctica on a 300 foot ship, with 82 passengers and 20 member crew. Can't imagine sailing the 40s. Wow.
That is one hell of a wet heavy boat. Quire mild conditions. The worst way to do this, but still a good experience.
How adjusted with the tiny-boat to mad waves of the ocean by the Brave Captain and camera man l feel tense and my body responses with the motions of the boat.Thanks....
Wao 😍, it's amazing.
Braver than I, my friends, braver than I.
super ideea să lăsați sunetul oceanului!👍
Buen vídeo! Se agradece también que no lo hayas estropeado con musiquitas. Gracias por compartir.
That's what I call a cruise! None of those big floating hotels for me.
I did a small expedition cruise to Antarctica, 300' ship, 82 passengers. That was great.

Not your average Sunday day sail 👍👍👍
This is great video! You sir have brass balls!
Toate bune in drumurile tale Om bun ! Pace si dragoste

Well said.
Not even the same catagory
Comparisons are odious...
"I think we are going to need a bigger boat"
Ha..ha..
No you don't
mindblowing sir
great
this video was amazing!!
Scary surf. Bravo. 👍
Beautiful day
Can a catamaran withstand those condition as good as a monohull does?
I have a very similar hard dodger in mind for my my high latitude preparations!
You are really brave 👏👏
A Lovely Time On Our Amazing Planet 🙏
where's a jib sail for stability? Oh I see, , I would have had that up from the start!
Tremendous Passage my friend! Congrats for that!! I have two questions: 1. Sailboat? and the Second What are you using the Spy Pole for and how do you determine the side of the boat? thanks!!
The storms are no fun! Thanks.
doing a crossing like that and still have the anchor on the roller....crazy......stow it as its only asking for trouble.....
Quite the ride, still out there?
No man, we have finished successfully

Interesting sail setup!
Is not better use in this condicions the stay sail?
Great, what's the boat ?
Excelent. Trailing warps or drogues at 0:36?
Se pare ca a fost o traversare buna. In ce perioada / unde / cu ce vieza medie/la rafala a vantului?
Traversarea a avut loc in anul 2014. Am plecat din Auckland in decembrie 28 si am ajuns in 11 februarie in Puerto Montt. Viteza medie 10-12 noduri.
I wonder what is the water temperature.
That looks like fun
Hats off Captain
i did the same thing in an even smaller boat ... but it was a dream ... well actually, a nightmare
A boat 1/2 as long as another (of same construction) is 3x stronger. Small well constructed boats
What is the length and beam of that boat?!
How many meters has your boat?
How fast was she going on surf and bare poles/Storm jib ? Thanks.
Between 10-12 knots
@@panzelesus What kind of boat was this again?
What? No tether on the winch handle. What you gonna do if you drop it in the water?!
Like his hollow laugh at start !
Cool stuff !!!!!
How the hell do you sleep in conditions like that?
Pretty sure you just ride it out, sleep when it's over.
...you sleep just when you are tired ....😬😇
Who could sleep when you are having that much fun?
Like a baby
Soundly.
Great sailor
How do I get a berth for the next adventure? So well done, both sailing and filming.
Buy a boat and plan your own. Other people just get in the way, singlenhand ot
Passage from where to where?
Ditto, what is the size, make and model of your boat?
Rob Cinq-Mars I second that
It's a 30-footer he built himself. I don't know who designed it. Source: www.yachtmollymawk.com/2010/10/romanian-phoenix/
The size is 33 feet, it's a handmade model. I made it myself
+marius albu Bravo very good.man!
@@panzelesus on what plans did you built this boat ?? who is the designer ??
Bravo!!!!
What is the boat type and size? She is aluminium?
Thank you.
What boat ?
I love sailing, but if I was out there, within twenty minutes I'd bitterly regret the decision, and despise every second of the Southern Ocean experience.
Very good
Would be nice to know wind and boat speed.
Got bloody sick just watching
souvenir souvenir but is not the same every days
Thats sailing!!
But the sails are all furled.
Why no sails up
Where is the sail?
Never mind.On second viewing I got it Heck of a job.Cant wait to have so much fun
how big is your boat? what model?
My boat is a 35 feet, handmade, I built it
very exciting
Even if he's tethered to the boat, what're the chances of him being able to get back in the boat if he goes overboard?
you set up the tether to not allow a complete sweeping over of the railing....secured onto a bar on which it can slide to allow boat access
A lot better than if he falls right off I would imagine.
Walter Strong Zero if he goes to the water
@Walter Strong, the chances are slim and strongly depend on the actions of the crew onboard. For best chances there need to be drills and the crew needs a lot of experience with handling man-overboard situation in rough seas.
None!
love it, what a ride
Gritty plus no damn elevator music.
awesome!
Salute!
amazing
Bare poles?
Dimensions of this boat?
33 feet
7.5 feet wide ?
You nearly capsized
small boat, huge balls
No sail up. Just surfing.
Robert Lee - I noticed the same thing after about 10 seconds of wondering why he seemed to have no directional stability. Everything is furled.
classixdrummer He had a partly reefed foresail up held out wit a whisker pole.
Peter Boyle - Thanks, I see that now at 18 seconds in.
Already Feeling home sick by sitting at home.
You don't have any sails up!

I feel sick just watching that. Imagine going below and fixing a stinking diesel engine in that. Stay up top and watch the horizon friend.
wow, that boat can't be 30 feet!
Paul Orovan right ain't no way in hell I'd be out there on that tiny thing!
