    Visited Portugal in September of 2019. I could not help but fall in love with the country. Very beautiful. I would consider living there.

    Hi Tricia,
    Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. My husband, our 19 year old son and I are seriously considering moving to Portugal. We have been there once on a 17 day trip and visited several cities, the majority of them near Algarve, Lisboa and Porto. Currently we are planning a scouting trip there in December.
    At this point we are in the early stages of planning, but we feel kind of lost and do not know where to start. We would like to explore the possibility of either a retirement visa or starting business from the ground up in Portugal. Currently, we own a business in the US and because of the nature of it we could still work from Portugal.
    Where should we start?

      Look into visa types and decide which best suits your needs. If Portugal is like Spain, the retirement (nonlucrative) visa might not fit with continuing to work on your US business from Portugal - any income would have to be passive.

    Personally I wouldn't use Duolingo as it only teaches Brazilian Portuguese which I have found is quite different from European Portuguese. I would recommend Memrise or Drops as alternative apps.

      To my great sadness i as a Portuguese person no longer consider Brazilian a Portuguese language but a language on it´s own.

    Portugal sounds like a wonderful place to tour everywhere in Europe. If 70+, it would be more advantageous to rent an apartment in a senior community. Also US seniors should not go expat in order keep their US pension benefits and insurance. There are many questions older retirees of average or modest means should ask their employers in the US about keeping their money and benefits when moving overseas.

  • @steveh545
    @steveh545 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    you touched upon learning the language. Many of the online services seem to be brazilian-centric. Maybe it's 'close', but if i'm going to learn from scratch, i'd rather learn "european' Portuguese. Rules out Duolingo, and some other sites. So, where does one go to do learn Portuguese? (and don't say 'go to portugal' lol.Working on that )

    We are seriously considering moving to Portugal once they open back up for visa applications. 2 questions.....
    How is the insulation in homes in the Lisbon area? I hear that insulated homes are a problem even more so in the cooler months.
    2. Is there a shift in wildfire management to decrease them? If so, what is the shift?

      The name of the towns mentioned: Viana do Castelo, Esposende, Sines, Loulé, Cascais and Albufeira. Just go to Google Maps and type in their name and Portugal and it goes there. I live in a very good city between Lisbon and Porto which is called Leiria. I have a friend who is an excellent real estate agent, if you are interested I can give you his contact info. You can also search TH-cam for the name of the towns and you will probably find movies about them.

      To answer your question you need to buy a property or stay 183 (not consecutively ) in Portugal to qualify for the NHR program. I have lived in Spain for years. Let me me know if I can help.

      You will need to stay 183 days in Portugal or invest 500k in a property to qualify for the NHR program. You can receive your British pension tax free and in Portugal there is no inherence tax. If I can help further let me know. I have lived in Spain for 15 years. I am an American. There are many tax advantages for British citizens in Portugal

    Are there senior apartment communities in Portugal? Can people keep their US Citizenship when living in Portugal. If not, it would be better to long term rent as long as you have access to your money like in the US. Are banks trustworthy in Portugal?

    To retire in Portugal, with an outside income, the law states: "Requisito essencial para o Visto D7

    Dentre os requisitos necessários para o êxito no requerimento destaca-se a comprovação de que o requerente possui os rendimentos mínimos previstos em lei que possibilitam a sua residência em Portugal, garantidos por período não inferior a 12 meses e o respectivo comprovativo de envio para Portugal. O rendimento mínimo necessário varia de acordo com a quantidade de pessoas que compõem o agregado familiar do requerente, a ser contabilizado nos seguintes termos:
    Primeiro adulto (requerente): 100% do salário mínimo vigente (600€) = 7.200€ /ano;
    Segundo adulto: 50% do salário mínimo vigente (300€) = 3.600€/ano;
    Cada criança e jovens com idade inferior a 18 anos e maiores a cargo do requerente: 30% do salário mínimo vigente (180€) = 2.160€/ano.
    Por se tratar de uma decisão discricionária por parte da autoridade portuguesa julgadora, naturalmente que quanto maiores os rendimentos comprovados maiores as chances do requerente obter êxito no seu pedido de Visto D7.
    This is always changing but according to www.eurodicas.com.br/visto-d7/ the first adult will need to show proof of 100% of the minimum salary, which at present is 635 euros. The second adult must prove an income of 50% of the minimum salary and each child must show an income of 30% of the minimum.

    Good information. Tax wise I should only report to them my social security income? We would be well over their minimum but we do have other incomes that are USA based and would like to avoid a double tax on those.

    • @TriciaPimental
      @TriciaPimental 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Due to tax treaties, there is no double taxation. This will, however, require you to coordinate your tax filings with your U.S. tax preparer and your Portugal tax preparer. The letter of the law in both countries requires full reporting of all income, and the United States requires reporting of all bank accounts outside of the U.S. if the aggregate is greater than $10K. Portugal requires filing of a tax form for all residents spending more than 183 days in the country. Hope this helps!

      You can live very well in Portugal on that income. Just stay out of Lisbon and some parts of the Algarve. Lisbon has become extremely expensive and Porto is not too far behind. Braga is still very affordable as is Coimbra.

    • @ganymeade5151
      @ganymeade5151 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most people cannot afford to live in the US anymore. The cost of housing is making many homeless. Greedy landlords. Killer HOAs, etc. are to blame. People who buy houses or condos are getting bad deals in the US. Plus, the quality of life is deteriorating in the US with too much crime; low paying jobs, high taxes, uncivil people, etc. If you are already rich in the US, you get richer and have a wonderful life; while the rest of us are stuck where we are. No one who has worked hard and been a loyal employee and made $70,000/year should be homeless in old age. Sad that too many are. It is all about who you know in the US; not what you know. The US has become corrupt and unfriendly place to live. I would hope they treat seniors better in Europe and Portugal than in the US. The US is a shallow and materialistic country.

    • @ganymeade5151
      @ganymeade5151 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the average person makes $1,000 a month in Portugal, you should be able to live in an affordable senior community. Make sure you have secure access to your money and social security from the US. Figure out taxes. You might not want to give up US Citizenship and just reside there to make sure you keep full access to your money and benefits.

    • @ganymeade5151

      I have heard that apartments and houses are very cold in Portugal so many seniors have died from the cold from pneumonia. The sea is cold also. Heat is not always available and is expensive. So that is something to consider.

    I have lived here for thirty years and I have never come across a person who has never got into high school who could discuss Plato, Aristotle, and "interesting things about science and history". In fact one of the biggest problems in Portugal is precisely that large portion of the population that has little education and is not prepared to compete in a sophisticated technological world. In general though Portuguese public schools don't do a bad job, despite a shortage of funds for infrastructure and equipment. There is though a serious problem of teacher absenteeism and when a teacher is on sick leave or misses class there is no substitute, resulting in students either going home or playing on their mobile phones in the classroom.
