damn i was so fucking scared of this as a kid when this song came out. btw the second singer (devil) was drunk as hell when they shooted the video and she remembers nothing from that day :D
This was lowkey one of my favourite songs growing up. I've seen the clip and listened to the words for years and I can tell you what is going on in this video clip.. The man on the bed is on life support, dying and the woman with him is his lover. She is trying to get him to wake up and come back to her. She would rather die than be without him. The second singer is the Angel of Death coming to take him (see halo above her head). Her world is the underworld, not another planet. You were closest when you called her a "Demon". "If your world is wearing thin and you're thinking of escape" - If he's fading away and thinking of giving up "But if you try to go alone, don't think I'll understand" - If he does choose to give up, she won't be ok "In the silence of your room, in the darkness of your dreams" - The room in which he's being cared for and the lost space he's in while in a coma "You must only think of me, there must be no inbetween" - She is telling him to only focus on her and nothing else to guide him home while he's lost in the dark "And when your pride is on the floor, I'll make you beg for more" - When he feels defeated, she will raise him up and give him strength "You'd better hope and pray, that you make it safe back to your own world" - talking to the man about it already being too late. Death is coming for him and his soul is in mortal danger as he tries to make it back to the world of the living "You'd better hope and pray, that you'll wake one day in your own world" - Talking to the man about waking up "Cause when you sleep at night, they don't hear your cries in your own world" - Revealing that the man is desperate in trying to escape, but his cries can't be heard in the living world, only the underworld "Only time will tell if you can, break the spell, back in your own world" - Now talking to the man about his lover trying to win him from the clutches of death. The spell being the state he's currently in.. a coma What follows is the "fight for his life", Angel of Death vs. this one woman's love. The Angel of Death sees that their love is enough to win his soul and rolls her eyes in a "whatever, next time" type manner. In the end she wins her fight to have him stay alive and her voice and love woke him up. The Angel of Death left because he lived.

Shakespear's Sister was a solo project by Siobhan Fahey (a member of the British female Pop Rock singing trio. Bananarama). Eventually, veteran American session singer Marcella Detroit (who did backup vocals for the Eric Clapton song, "Lay Down Sally") was brought in to the project in 1989. "Stay" was released in 1991. Marcella Detroit is the lead singer in this song/music video, and Ms. Fahey joins in later in the song, and appears as an Angel Of Death in the music video. Shakespear's Sister has been an off-again, on-again project for Siobhan Fahey, and Marcella Detroit has been in and out of the project as well.

I was about to say that too. Siobhan is do underrated. But I can see Mr. Video do Cruel Summer (or maybe he did do that done, I'm not sure) or any other Bananarama song that she was in before 1988
As others mentioned Siobhan (pronounced Shiv-on, or Shi-vaun is you want to sound a bit more Irish) plays Death in this, well she sang lead on most of their songs and really the group was hers with Marcella being an employee (loads of bands do this so the band founders maintain control so future additions don't take over). So Siobhan was not happy when the record execs wanted this to be a single, and it became their biggest hit by a long way which lead to a certain tension and Marcella ended up being fired. They have since reconciled, I guess time and tour revenues can bridge the gaps. One of the song's writers is Dave Stewart, the male half of the Eurythmics. Also note that the band's name is missing a letter compared with William Shakespeare's surname.
