Trying to salvage a botched fill and continue the song is something we make a point of doing in my band rehearsals. That way, it's not so dramatic if I botch a fill live.

Hey! I have the same 2 metronome apps. I think the gap/silence is super helpful to internalize the beats.

I would add that simply having even hands improves timekeeping because the weak hand isn't pulling or pushing the beat out of time.

I've never grown so much from one simple exercise! I was dumb enuff to think I sorta invented it tho. However, I never heard of it so...... yeah. Anyway I use 'Tempo' as well and I set it to +5 bpm every 2 mins then back the other way. I do triplets, sextuplets n 32notes til they get to fast and I move accents around. Amazing results. Good one Stephen.

Thanks for a great video! It would be nice to hear about learning 8th and 16th pauses in different combinations.

Hi Stephen, I have downloaded your free guide, thank you. This is really interesting, as I keep practicing moving from one pattern into another as smoothly as possible, and I know this skill will come much later. I am working through the days' exercises. I'm finding building the 4 way independence a huge challenge, especially the 16th notes on the kick drum. I can't seem to stop my right arm on the high hat following the rhythm of the kick!! Any tips?

i usually use my body or a head bob (and sometimes a bass kick or hi hat chick) to feel the quarter or eighth note pulse while subdividing with my hands - when i don't do that... it doesn't sound bad, but it doesn't sound as technical (if that makes sense to anyone lol)

Short answer: Make sure the snare lines up on 2 and 4 or whatever beat it lands on on the regular beat during your drum fill?

I’m not sure what you mean by “train wrecked” the band. Does that mean losing the beat so badly that the band has to stop and start again? If so, I can’t remember the last time I’ve done that with a band. I’ve definitely done that in practice though. Many times.

either that or have that awkward transition after the fill where they whole band has to unexpectedly get back in sync with each other

What's your point? Stephen is sharing his experience and considerable expertise for free! If it's not for you (and you don't care for his style) there are plenty of other good teachers available - perhaps try those instead rather than criticise.
