- At the Spa 24 Hours, during a historic support race, this incredible battle broke out between two Audi R8 GT3s, two Aston Martin DBR9s and two Maserati MC12 GT1 cars.
The amazing battle in the Endurance Racing Legends race was captured by this onboard footage from Richard Meins - driver of the DBR9 - as he fought for the first two laps of the race around the sweeping corners of Spa-Francorchamps.
How incredible does that V12 sound?

Man, I still miss the GT1 class.
This race reminds us of all the great GT racing eras of the last 30 years and how we’ve lost some of the great variety we had.

Spa is such a great track, I can't believe F1 is thinking of crossing it off their schedule.
They should so that the spa we all love can be retained and not another track ruined by f1. I mean they already ruined bus stop...

@@rehannoor4961 would disagree with you. When i went to spa as a little lid and the old busstop was still there, that was much cooler and better for the spectators too. It had a lot of overtakes but also far less crashes as now

@@rehannoor4961 I m confused...so the old bus stop was pre 2007. Since then there s this ugly, very slow chicane. The old one had much more flow and was going the opposite side to now and thats the one that i was referring to
FIA GT1 World Championship too bad its not around anymore. Loved the DBR9 from the early 2000s! (2004-2007) 😁 Loved driving the MC12 in NFS Shift 2: Unleashed it had the smoothest acceleration! Matter of fact I believe I used the same paint livery as the one in this video! (Blue and Black one)

@@Xfighter04 Yes it was and im actually kinda surprised we haven’t gotten a third game yet. Shift 2 was released back in 2011.

Beautifull weather in Spa - that perfect is not too common over there in the nice Ardennes.
This is when cars and motor racing was at its peak.
What a glorious sound that engine gives, sends me back to Le Mans 2009!
The real battle for Aston Martin is the same one that's been going on since they started, it's called lack of profit and mountainous interest repayments

Got to admire the Audis’ cornering speed and acceleration but the Aston’s grunt once it got traction, from out of the corners, was epic.

The line the driver is taking is a bit off. At least it seems so from that camera angle that he is not hitting the apex right in most of the turns.

I don't know, I think the Maserati driver wasn't pushing the car, you can see how he catches up with those in front but when braking he didn't lower the gear changes and also didn't follow the racing line.
Was that Joe Macari in the MC12?

I realize the R8s are newer but are they (GT3) really faster than these GT1s? 🤯
I think they were slightly deristricted to compete with the GT1’s as the GT3 of that sort of era were slower than GT1.

Lot of armchair racers in chat. It's a 15+ year old GT1 car. They weren't exactly known for being easy to drive. These drivers were more interested in not stuffing a piece of history into a wall.
I know sad really. The description even says it’s a legends race! Let’s see how many of these commentators could actually ‘hit the apex’ in one of these beasts.
Too bad the MC12 never raced at Le Mans because of the big GT1s being banned from 1999 as the top class by FIA... It would have been really really great in my opinion at Le Sarthe. Maybe not be able to compete against the unbeatable R8 LMP or the Bentley Speed 8 but still it would have had done great things for sure... ❤😍
iirc GT1's weren't banned, the Merc CLK-GTR's just dominated so the other manufacturers pulled out and the class collapsed for a few years. I'd love to see more GT1 action for sure.
in 2005, in the FIA GT championship, the previous GT ( GT2 in real terms ) cars were renamed GT1, even though they were the same cars as the Gt2 cars in 2004.
Because of this, the lower class N-GT ( GT3 ) cars were renamed GT2.
These cars had nothing to do with the 1990:s GT1 cars which were extremely low number specials.
That it the MC12 diden`t race at Le Mans, was because the organizers diden`t approve it, because it was supposed to be to superior compared to the other cars in the class, like the then dominant Prodrive built Ferrari 550 Maranello GTS, especially in aerodynamic terms, hence it had to run a less efficient aerodynamic package among other things to qualify for the FIA GT championship, beginning in late 2004, and it`s first full season was in 2005, but it was not approved for Le Mans anyways.

R8 LMS ULTRA ? or GT3 ? Why is that Audi so fast?
An LMS ultra is a GT3. What your seeing is a GT3 car running with less restrictions to engine and perhaps weight aswell. Basically GT3'S are faster than older GT1 cars unrestricted

@@bjhbjhbjhweeee na the Audi R8 would still be referred to as an GT3 car. Since it's designed to meet GT3 regulations. But it's not bound to those regulations, it can have it's engine intake restrictions, and additional weight balasts all removed when not racing to GT3 regulations, like the one in video. [Those parts are just for B.O.P]
Ortelli drives the Audi. and in 2010 the last gt1 year, the gt1 was much slower. less power and more weight

Imagine your driving in a Maserati and you can't catch an Audi R8 LMS GT3 car XD
Not surprising, an unrestricted GT3 car would have no problem out running a older GTS era GT1 car.

Air restricted. And the Aston was always noticeably faster than the Lamborghini on the straights. Watch some old races, it's quite evident.

Very poor drive from the MC12. Lost almost every apex! Car was way too "front"
