Well, in fact weather won this battle not Wellington. A day after the battle, it was raining so the ground was wet. So canon balls couldn't reflect from the ground. Otherwise, Wellington's positions at that hill would have been destroyed by french artillery. But I admit that Wellington played his part.
I think he new it was going to rain before hand and because he new about this area. Wellington new it was the perfect defendable place to hold the French before the Prussians arrived.
@@larrygraysmith8411 They weren't doing that . The French waited for the ground to get dry . And lost time , Napoleon wanted artillery there. The artillery actually did many casualties to the British squares during the big charge of cavalry , no ground to justificate. The time was guilty.

He didn't have a chance his plans were betrayed by his own side, unlike in the movie they knew he was coming and were ready for him, It is also thought that Marshal Grouchy had been bought off, with 30,000 men he sat in the forest and did nothing while the battle raged, It was still a close run thing and those men would have made a difference.
Marshal Grouchy was busy fighting the Prussian rear-guard at Wavre. He wasn't sitting around. Not to mention, he was the one of the last considerable French force.
Before the attack normally the artillery would've devastated enemy's lines as at Austerlitz or Jena, but at Waterloo this didn't worked, the allies were too well placed and the muddy terrain voided cannoballs' effects
Actually , they are going in the safest march position . In column , cannonballs can pass through dozens of men before stopping. In lines only some can be taken down at the same.Lines are poor to resist bullets (all the line can be hit ) columns are safer to resist bullets ( only the front can be hit ). To shoot the lines are better , because more shoot at the time and more shots = more kills . That's why. The reality is that the artillery , during cavalry charge. Was doing very well , destroying squares very easily . Squares are compact positions to don't let the horses pass through thin lines or encircle columns. So they were perfect, for that .Don't call them suicidal . For the time they were better than spacings and squad tactics, you can't kill 20000 with 9000 guys split in 1000 squads ( 9 per squad ) .
