Wonderful film. I forced my poor parents to take me to see it whilst it was on when we was on our holidays in the New Forest they reluctantly took me. But I think even my mum was impressed. It steered me further onto the road of military history I have followed ever since. It’s one of the rare things that you cannot imagine your life being without. I’ve often looked for films to better it. But none have thus far certainly not for the period.
You know, I would kill for war movies to be made at this scale and this attention to historic accuracy. Not the Wonderwoman and Fury BS we keep getting.
Commodore Sven Reddy I rather watch films like this, the Longest Day is another film that can't be made now due to the guys who made it were at D Day so actually had a better insight into the event.
Yeah I totally agree, you could watch a bridge too far because it's really accurate however it wasn't in this scale because it was in ww2 but still a great movie I'd recommend
@@JohnsonTheSecond I classify it as one because I dislike the setting and obviously the creators wanted to try and define it as one also. It tried to use real life figures and portray the war realistically when instead the concept and backdrop fell flat on it's face for any person with a loose concept of what The Great War was. Using a historic figure like Ludendorff as a fictional bad guy is downright bad and the portrayal of the Germans is appalling. By comparison Captain America does have the WW2 Backdrop but is set in less defined locations against a fictional elite special forces (Hydra) and as far as I can remember no major historical figures are shown to be part of the movie. Thus they don't interfere with real history nearly as much as Wonderwoman does. I should also place the disclaimer that I hated Wonderwoman from the moment I saw the add was set in WW1, because I was studying the subject very closely at the time, and hated it even more as I watched the movie and saw Fokker Eindeckers in Turkey in 1918, Ludendorff being portrayed similarly to Hydra, and a British heavy tank on a massive German aerodrome well behind German lines. As well as the "We can't attack else we will interrupt the ceasefire" line which was complete bullshit.
The Director didn't make a film about the battle of Waterloo, he RESTAGED IT and just happened to film it! They used something like 150,000 Soviet soldiers and tens of thousands of horses and hundreds of working cannon, no film in history has ever been so close to the real thing without actually being it! The bits of the film taken from the air are absolutely incredible, they show the incredible scale of the re-enactment of the battle, truly awesome!
The cannon did not work - They were just props with maybe a smoke bomb in the barrel. They did not fire blanks, they did not recoil at all. Otherwise yeah, absolutely amazing.
@@JohnsonTheSecond At least they tried to replicate recoil by pulling them back with ropes (you can see the ropes!) but unfortunately it's quite delayed ends up just looking weird. Also the "muskets" are all Soviet Mosin-Nagants with decorative barrel bands and flintlocks, the same as later seen in some parts of Sharpe.
The only way this movie could get longer is if they add some of the KGL, Brunswick, Nassau, some more of the Prussians and the Prussians at Plancenoit.
