I'm a plasterer by trade and having to take on other work just to get by. I worked for a cabinet maker and we installed kitchens etc. the last bigger job I rendered I always think of following trades. In the bathroom I measured everything square and set straight edges and clamped before rendering to make level and square. The cabinet maker then measured to put in top. First cut he put it in and it didn't need any scribing or anything. I was very pleased and satisfied. I'm sure the cabinet maker was happy also no tweaking.

Also, won't the shelf end up being slightly too small by the distance between the scribing tool's "feeler" and the pencil?
You cut the template to the scribe line before you glue the template together. He did it out of order as he wasn’t going to use the scribe line for this project, so it didn’t matter.

This is the best way that I’ve found yet and works great. I’ve learned to use my cigar torch lighter to melt the glue when the wood is separated. I burn it for a few seconds and then scrape it off with a piece of scrap wood; works great over and over. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!

That’s way better than my framing square and measuring the gap and drawing it out on the wood because this takes the back wall not being parallel to the main wall out of the equation. Great tip👍
I just cut my shelves long and scribe in with a compass and pencil. Scribe one side first and cut it to the line then measure the distance and mark it . Scribe to that mark and cut it off. Leave it proud at the front to scribe the back also if that's out .... Presto
I learned this from another video (the channel Rag and Bone) and I think it's definitely the best method. I think he also used a corner gauge to adjust for the corner being off 90°.

what to do if your brace beams or cleats don't sit flush with the wall. Does that matter? My wall at the back is bowed inwards so there's quite the gap along the back

Great tip , why have I never thought of that when doing this sort of thing !! A tip back at you ( which you probably already know ) i usually use my stabila laser lever ,stand the pole in front of the alcove , mark your shelve heights , adjust laser level to marks , mark wall on the three sides , perfectly level . Do you have a video for scribing filler pieces or how to deal with a gap and a piece of stock that has to fit in a opening and be scribed on one side? I always mess up the overall width of the piece.
Just received my "divider" tools for scribing and big ruler/edge. using pieces of wood as a straight edge is how one ends up jamming against a circular saw, cos that mark aint straight. you could glue the two cross pieces underneath instead, so you have nothing to bump into to scribe the sides. main hardware store here doesnt carry dividers or nice rulers/straight-edge, so need to buy those online

You have to set your audio recorder rate to match the video camera rate. Most dslr cameras use 48hz 16bit format. Set your zoom recorder to 48hz 16 bit. Or 24bit. Otherwise you will have that audio drift and it won't line up. However, I'm not sure what gopro camera format is. TH-cam it! Or Google it too! Sounds like a pain. But if you want good audio to add quality to your videos, learn to match up the recording rates of recorder and camera. Then set it and forget it. Your done. Canon T6i is a good camera that does video too and won't break the bank. It Was my first camera for interviews and I used a separate recorder. Hope that helps!
Going to put some shelves into an alcove with exposed brick on one side and dodgy wall on the other. The wood I'm using is oak and it's 50mm so pretty thick . So I can't decide about maybe trying a small chase in the brick on one side or scrbing. I'm bit worried as I've never tried to scribe something that thick . I'll be using brackets to hold shelf.
Gosforth Handyman no brackets are random shapes as well mostly metal. Will be a gap either side yes . Alcove just under a meter So 14 inches apart or something. Havnet got to that bit yet 😁. It's a bookshelf so scribes don't have to be spot on as book will mostly cover it. But don't want big gaps either. Was Thinking about placing bottom scribe on mortar so I could chase a bit and repoint after. Basically I'm scared to try to scribe something that thick of hardwood never attempted it and i guess point is scribe top and bottom will be different lol
It will be a nightmare to scribe - I'm more thinking you could do an undercut / beveled top cut if the underside wasn't going to be visible, it's easier to tweak the scribe then with a sharp chisel / plane. Doesn't really work if you'll see the underside too though. 😀
That could work. Would certainly make the scribe a lot easier if you can remove some of the middle material that won't be seen. Also depends what's happening at the front. Tricky one but I think that's what I'd do. Let us know how you get on! 👍
I used a similar trick using newspaper sheets and joined them with masking tape to get the exact shape of a small room. You're right: alcoves, etc., are never straight/square. Great video - thanks for sharing so others can learn!

I remember when you had a problem with your riving knife on your table saw, you used a special imperial/metric self adjusting dynamic leveling wrench, sometimes known as a bloody big hammer, try that on your go pro, I guarantee you won't ever suffer with sync problems again with that camera lol

Great if the walls are not square but doesn't account for uneveness/bows and dips. My alcove is bowed at the back by abour 5-8mm and eneven both sides. I think the veneered board will have to be cut with a router to avoid chipping
I already subscribed. I like that. Also I bought a scribe like the one you used for brick paving. That's a better method of scribing to how I did scribes. I held a 4 or 5 mm spacer for my scribes. Another tip is cut a carpenters pencil on an angle. I used a belt sander upside down and put a block 5mm lower. This meant the pencil marked 5 mm from a wall.
I call it the youtube 5% rule were videos will nearly always get a 5% thumbs down. Now it is not exact figure but I tend to find that 5% is nearly always the figure.
Or, one could take a piece of cardboard (from a cardboard box), and cut around that with a knife to make a template. Then use the template to mark out one's shelf. Cut the shelf with a jigsaw. I have a very irregular corner of room with brick walls on 2 sides having irregular, rushed brickwork! One one side there are 2 pipes running up the wall, an electrical conduit, and strips of wood (holding my electricity meter and fuse box (below) in place. It's a whole new dimension of irregularity.
Thanks for this, but the problem I have is that I don’t have any batons in the alcove I’m measuring. I’d rather not add any ideally, as the measurement is for a glass shelf that will be supported by small glass brackets. This makes a 3 piece thing like that hard to hold level and glue at the same time...🤔 I could put batons in, then take them out and fill/repaint but I’m a lazy git. How do I do this and still maintain the aforementioned lazy-gitidness? 😀

Not sure I fully understand the issue with the sound/image sync - but if you have different frequencies for the Gopro and the H2 then it will be out, or go out of sync. The general thing is to set both sound inputs to 48 khz Nice video!

Thanks a lot for this tip Andy, I'm probably being a bit dim but I'm not entirely clear on the scribing bit. If you had a particularly wonky alcove which needed scribing on say three sides, you would need to allow for the reduction in size after the waste had been removed, the only way I can think to do this is to cut each strip in turn before gluing together. (In which case cardboard might be easier to cut in situ?) Is this how you would do it or is there a simpler way?
Personally I'd mark the scribe pattern on tape on the template and then transfer the tape to the piece being cut - I've never had much success with cardboard templates but it's just down to what you're used to. 😀👍
Using your freehand picture of the alcove on the dry erase board with odd angles at the back of the alcove-how do you determine what angle to cut the back of long pieces of the MDF (the left and right pieces)? Your template example does not really show that.

Possible answer to your audio / visual sync is the frame rate of your camera and the sample rate of your audio are not compatible... I'm not sure what editor you're using, but I've used WaveAgent before to fix that exact issue. Useful scribing tip too!
It's just in bog standard 25fps PAL in HD and don't think you can change the audio sample rate. Need to see if there's a new firmware update when I get 5 mins. I use Vegas btw. Cheers for watching Phil! 👍

I'm guessing you would have to scribe the individual sides first before making the template to compensate for the scribe offset?
Personally if I was scribing the sides I'd do the scribe mark on tape and then move it back by the offset but it's personal preference really. 👍

Not sure I fully understand the issue with the sound/image sync - but if you have different frequencies for the Gopro and the H2 then it will be out, or go out of sync. The general thing is to set both sound inputs to 48 khz

Cheers! Yes, nothing to do with sync between GoPro and H1. GoPro's own audio isn't in sync with it's own video. 3-4 frames out.

Thanks a lot for this tip Andy, I'm probably being a bit dim but I'm not entirely clear on the scribing bit. If you had a particularly wonky alcove which needed scribing on say three sides, you would need to allow for the reduction in size after the waste had been removed, the only way I can think to do this is to cut each strip in turn before gluing together. (In which case cardboard might be easier to cut in situ?) Is this how you would do it or is there a simpler way?
Personally I'd mark the scribe pattern on tape on the template and then transfer the tape to the piece being cut - I've never had much success with cardboard templates but it's just down to what you're used to. 😀👍

Using your freehand picture of the alcove on the dry erase board with odd angles at the back of the alcove-how do you determine what angle to cut the back of long pieces of the MDF (the left and right pieces)? Your template example does not really show that.
Great tip. For the rails, would it have been better to have the front cross rail go to the end? It would have covered the end grain😉
There's a trim that covers the whole front edge so you don't see that. You'll see it on other floating shelf vids I do. 👍😀

Possible answer to your audio / visual sync is the frame rate of your camera and the sample rate of your audio are not compatible... I'm not sure what editor you're using, but I've used WaveAgent before to fix that exact issue. Useful scribing tip too!
It's just in bog standard 25fps PAL in HD and don't think you can change the audio sample rate. Need to see if there's a new firmware update when I get 5 mins. I use Vegas btw. Cheers for watching Phil! 👍
