I've been told that the Powkiddy X55 is a great value for what it can handle (N64, DS and PSP emulation). But my experience raises some questions...

It's crazy seeing how far some of these handhelds have come since just a few years ago
i was getting tired of emulation devices capping out at psx bc the psp could handle all of it.
I dunno on one hand I agree but also this thing should be more powerful than an Ouya that came out a decade ago. Seems about the same based on the emulation.
@@dirediredude Did anyone use the Ouya for emulation? I always thought it was a completely different market. And tbh I think you get way more bang for your buck with better screens and overall ease of use. Especially because their technically cheaper now
@@chilidogs083 yeah that's basically what it became shortly after it launched. Their "marketplace" was pretty slim and after a year or two development slowed down a lot but turns out it was a solid emulation box. Retroarch came with it and you could run everything up to N64/PlayStation without much issue.
@@jennyholiday88PSP could not handle N64 emulation, I remember it was a lot of trouble. Not sure if someone has made a good N64 emulator for PSP after its heyday as a technical showcase but definitely the ports of daedelus64 were so slow.
After thinking about it a bit, having L3 (left stick click) as the cursor press button makes a ton of sense when you consider that using R3 would cause the cursor to move, and make it insanely difficult to either click and drag, or draw.
It also avoids accidentally clicking if pressing too hard when trying to scroll in those heat of the moments of CoD. I think it'd still be weird but it may be more optimal.
Maybe R2 (or R1 if switched) like the Steamdeck would be more intuitive though
This was my first physical emulation device that wasn't a PC and I love it so far. I've mainly been using it for GBA, DS, and the occasional simple PSP titles like Patapon. It just feels better to me to play handheld games with a handheld instead of on my PC. I can't explain it. Maybe it's nostalgic or something.
Same
Makes sense. Some games just click in your hands. Lots of puzzle/rythem games i feel play great natively on handheld.
Zero latency on handheld. I can't play rhythm games on TV
Why not use phone with ds4 controller?
@@daorkykid biggest thing is battery life of my phone is precious, and for the price, this gives me a dedicated device for my retro games. I've considered a separate phone with controller, but the price here is just tough to argue with
The surfshark ad was too real ðĒ
Sup wood good to see ya here
Also hopefully you got your discord account back
@beatemups felt that burn
I immediately thought of you lol
He told me it actually happened? #wulffdendad
I love how he shows the lag and everything unlike other youtubers that obly show the good stuff
I just pulled the trigger on the X55 today. First time buying an emu device. I chose this one because what I really wanted was "Access to the GBA library on my Switch" and this is about the closest thing I could find under $100. I like the large screen (eyes are getting old), and I like the larger, horizontal form factor (more comfortable to hold for extended times). This video tells me I think I made the right choice! Not interested in the cheaper vertical layouts, and don't need to run N64 or any 3D games at all, really.
When they do come out with clamshell emulators, I hope they allow us to use the bottom screen for efficient music apps while playing single-screen games up top.
That is brilliant! I hope so too.
Any word? I'm holding out on a good clamshell device
Dual screen emulator handhelds arent going to be a thing for a while or ever, there's just not much reasons to make one as its only for a niche crowd
Whoa, whoa, whoa. You want well designed software and a usable piece of hardware? /s
But honestly, you'll probably have to wait for a custom firmware to make it work correctly anyway
I mean the retroid pocket flip exists but iirc bob gave it a scathing review and it was either at the start of or in the middle of the bob retroid hate arc
My dream machine would be the X55 design, 405M hardware, and RP 2S joysticks
I totally agree on the sweet spots. It is mostly an insignificant half-step in the area between the sweet spots. Great review.
I love how the first game shown is Perfect Dark.
A digital masterpiece that will forever stand the test of time. And having it set in the year 2023 makes it so nostalgic.
I picked this up after the glowing Retro Game Corps review and been bummed it doesn't seem to be as enjoyable for a lot of other reviewers. That said, this is my first retro gaming handheld and I've been enjoying it a lot. JELOS has ran really nicely and I love the big screen. Obviously it's not pixel perfect, but the smaller screens just feel so cramped for me regardless of intended aspect ratio. I also wanted the horizontal form factor and two analog sticks which I wouldn't have gotten with MM+. I will probably upgrade to something more powerful at some point, but in terms of dipping my toes in the hobby and spending a little more for a few specific features I wanted I'm quite happy with the purchase.
Man, I remember buying my gpd XD and was so excited to receive it. It was 250 then, now Iâm considering upgrading to one of these beauties.
I could watch Bob talk about retro handhelds ALL DAY BABYâžïļ
âImagine if your phone started playing music every time you unlock itâ
Oh man I used to have Wii music set up on my phone for some apps and the home screen I missed those days
When he said this it made me think about all the old bootups and their music. I believe even the PS4 had some themes with music built in. Still would be nice to give the option to turn it off easily though
Vertical could be cool, DS and Arcade emulation would be great
They'd have to get the stacking correct, though. So many DS emulators just smash the two screens together, and no. That's wrong. The gap between the two screens was accounted for in many games, and smashing the two screens together makes them look awful.
I think 4:3 screens make the most sense for dedicated emulation handhelds. Every single console up through Dreamcast, Gamecube, & PS2 was designed for 4:3. Even the DS has 4:3 screens. Unfortunately all the game boys have weird unique aspect ratios, but the GB/GBC screen at a nearly-square 10:9 is much better suited to 4:3 than it is to 16:9. GBA is a little wider than 4:3, so it can go either way. PSP and Wii are the first systems you'd really wanna have widescreen for. At that point, I'd probably just get the 4:3 system and try to run widescreen stuff on my phone
Totally agree with the $100 price point observation. Puts you in a strange spot where most/some things work. I want things to either work or not.
I have one. Feels cheap, but works well. Nice screen, speakers sound well and get loud and it performs well overall for the price. I recommend updating the stock JELOS to the latest, at minimum fixes the slow boot issue OOB. I've played DC/Saturn w/o issue, N64 is hit and miss, mostly hit. Its been my daily driver since I bought it about 4 weeks ago. Mainly because of its 5 in screen and its lightweight and ergo feel. paid under $100 shipped which included the case and screen protector. no regrets with it so far other than its cheap feel.
Did it include memory card with games? It seems its more costly if u want 20 000 games included with external memory card
I'm just here for the embedded ads, they are so good!
I use to use a DS Lite with an R4 card for DS. Now, I just use my Retroid Pocket 2+ for DS, and it works like a dream. I use the Drastic emulator, turn it sideways to get the vertical dual screen and control it with a $20 wireless controller that I connect directly to my 2+ using the controllerâs wireless usb-c receiver dongle.
Nice setup! Which controller do you use and what do you think of it?
That doggo is the cutest.. lol. I love your video's I wish there were more.
I had the Miyoo mini, the mini +, the rg35xx, the 353m and now the Retroid pocket 3+ with the custom grip. When you ahve hands on the bigger side you cant confortably use the mini or the xx for og periods, and teh X55 I found it at 70 USD free shipping on aly this past promo weekend. In the end you are correct! 65 is the sweetspot for under PSP, but this X55 is perfect for people with bigger hands. So recoemnded if you can find it on the 70ish pricepoint. Otherwise... is up to confort.
Love your style.

I completely agree. For pre-PS1 games I got myself a miyoo mini and RP4pro for everything else.
Now Iâm thinking about getting an additional Retroid 2s. The 3x4 screen is ideal for Nintendo consoles + it comes in indigo color, like my GBA.
My guyyyy thanks so much for using the megaman legends soundtrack, warms my heart and soul.
You should revisit the RG35XX with the newer custom firmwares they've added psp emulation as well as dreamcast. (not sure how controls work yet) but some psp games might be doable if your desperate enough.
I don't really know what else there is to say about it that Retro Game Corp didn't already say in his video on the topic. It runs now those systems..sorta.
The only psp games the 35xx can run are PSP minis and maybe a few 2d platformers and they drain the battery. The new retroid pocket 2s is the best value "under $100"
You know if all social media platforms would just play the advertisements you make Bob I wouldn't even have an ad blocker Love it!
Perfect timing, I was just getting that emulation itch the other day.
I love hearing Megaman Legends music in your videos. Thanks for keeping it around man.
I bought it recently and I can say - it has some quirks, but overall a great device. Even a few PSP are playable, incredible!
The X55 has a lot of things going against it but mostly the rising competition of T618 chips at around the $100-$150 price point. Also waiting 5 weeks from it to get from China when ordering direct had me in the mean time buying the Miyoomini plus, the anbernic 353m, the data frog sf2000, and watching all of these retro handheld review channels. TheFOMO is strong.
For the music part, these OS were made to be a DYI arcade solution, and and they wanted to emulate some arcade where they had music playing when not in use. They just left it on by default here
Your dog was terrified during ad recording, hope that you will grant him some awesome snacks for his hard work :)
I had looked into this handheld a lot as I wanted a comfortable, large screened device. I have the MM+ and it's great but the ergonomics and such a small screen are still the reasons why I don't play handhelds much anymore.
Held off on this though as the extra clicky buttons and lack of custom firmware at that time made it not a great deal. Just saved up for Steamdeck. The ergonomics on this still look pretty nice and I'm guessing this is much lighter too.
Any recommendations for large screened devices around this price range? I think that's one of the reasons to hold out for the $150ish range. The RP3+ was what I was looking at in comparison
im really constipated right now and listing to ur reviews really helps thx bahb
listening
Itâs so strange we donât have clamshells. Back when I used my Odin more, I used to use a GameSir X2 on it so that I could hold the console vertically and play DS that way lol
I can't put into words how much I dislike asymmetrical joystick placement. I say that as someone who has played his launch day switch lite daily until the Steam Deck was released.
I would like to see more MAME tests. Rarely people test MAME on these devices.
i wish mame wasnt an ass to set up and get roms
3:20 that shut up got me lol
i personally like the sound, especially if its customizable
Been playing Melee with my Pixel Fold, its insane how smooth the emulation is with Bluetooth controller connected. Almost no delay noticed to me. (Although I'm a casual player lol)
Bob thatâs some high quality content right here. Great jobð
With the RG35XX if you install Koriki OS on it you can run ds, n64, psp, dreamcast. Most of the time its not great but ds is mostly ok as long as it does not need a touch screen and for psp as long as it doesnt need the 2 joysticks. I havent tested dreamcast much. Overall Koriki os emulates existing systems better and with more options and adds some new systems and a higher (optional) clock speed.
I'm still happy with my 351v . Amber elec has really made it a great experience. But I think I'll grab one of these
I absolutely love emulation, and I love dogs ð too. Awesome Segway Mr. Wulff!
That add was amazing! ðķ
Personally, I love the Rg35XX and MM+. I just recently finished theming my RG after the original DMG Game Boy. I wouldn't plan on playing PSP, Vita, DS, or 3DS titles on emulation devices since I thankfully have a modded Vita and 2DS. However, I personally would love to have a simple and reasonably sized handheld for GameCube and PS2 games. I'm debating getting the Odin 2 but I honestly don't know if it's a good choice yet since there's only one video showing off PS2 emulation.
Fantastic little device! So easy to use as well, recommend this one for beginners due to price and ease of use
Curious to know your thoughts on this device vs the RG405M. The ergonomics seem way better with this device and the larger screen is a bonus. Only caveat is it seems less powerful based on your review and I mostly play PSP, PSX and N64 games.
speaking of new designs and dual screen devices - i didnât realize until you said this but iâd KILL for a PSP Go clone that can emulate and stream. I loved that device.
3:50
I installed a plugin just to play music on my steam Deck home screen.
Not sure why your mistaking the lack of this for a convenience, people really want to play music on their handhelds home screens to add personality and theming.
We didn't leave it behind out of dislike. Nobody asked for Nintendo to disable music on the 3DS, it was the best part of having 3DS themes and I have no idea why you would even dislike it unless you couldn't change the music.
I got the RG505P for $115 via Anbernic's sale recently.
I considered a lot of these but I needed a new tablet and Steam Deck just fit since tablets that can emulate pretty much everything are far more expensive. With FSR3 coming we will have 4k output as well with huge gains in performance..
7:48 The best DS and 3DS emulation for me is on the original Surface duo. Two big beautiful Screensaver, and Effortless emulation of the console.
Iâd love to do just that but the used prices for those phones is insane
@@stevenneaves8079 yeah $300+ without a controller. may as well get a 3DS. The Duo plays PS2 though.
Hey after the ad you did on the RED MAGIC 8S PRO i got it. It's awesome, could you do a video on emulating games on it?
Most chinese handhelds other than the RG35XX or MM+ are not worth it. These two handhelds, on the other hand, are perfect in what they do, while all others come with compromises. I'd like something as perfect as possible in what it does.
To cover my 64 bit+ emulation gap I'm using a Galaxy S22 + PS5 Dual Sense controller + phone clamp, and it's one of the best and most ergonomic handhelds I've ever had, and still reasonably portable.
I've actually been using LS in for interact in Starfield. Works a treat!
I think is great for ps1 emulation, all the others at this price point have way smaller screen or no stack shoulders button, or non analog at all.
I just wanted a device to stream everything (except maybe NES, SNES, GB, GBA) from my PC.
I wanted something to play anywhere in my house and this device was perfect for local streaming. Obviously every emulator runs like butter, because itâs actually running on my desktop PC.
My network only adds about 1 to 4ms of latency, and I estimate that encoding and decoding adds another 7 ms, that means that latency doesnât even add up to 1 frame (at 60 fps, which is what the X55 is capable of displaying).
I think the Retroid Pocket 2S is the one to get under $100
Probably. I just wish it had a bigger screen...
I've been wanting a portable retro gaming device that can play all the 6th generation of gaming consoles for 20+ years ever since I discovered emulation and the existence of the GP32.
The sweet spot for me is a device that can run God of War for PS2 at 60fps at 1x resolution with no noticeable slowdown for under $150. O
ther than laptops and an Xperia Play I only owned for a year before accidentally losing it, I did buy the OG RG350 and then a V90 just to learn the devices and tie me over till I get my third and final device, and the X55 does come close!
I just want to get a 3ds but HOLY CRAP!!! Talk about Expensive... I kick myself everyday for getting rid of my 3ds back in the day... I did not know anything about the modding community back then like I do now.
I personally think that a DSi(or even 3DS, but that isnt directly the same hardware as its slightly emulated) is a better option for DS emulation as you dont need a cart for either
3DS is great, but has gotten expensive nowadays...
I followed the trend and hacked a DSI XL and it's awesome. Definitely better than searching for an R4 without potential timebomb issues. The lack of a game boy port would be an issue but you can emulate those too.
I think an actual ds is the best option. It's cheaper, easier and obviously authentic with zero compatibility issues.
Love the Megaman Legends music in the beginning!
JELOS is stock on the device. RGC's instructions are to update the firmware to the most recent version. I had one of these for a couple of weeks and it wasn't the device for me. Didn't help that I didn't get it with an SD card, vying to use one we had lying around instead. Mistake.
This is really great content. Thank you
I would love to see some sort of guide that sort of establishes "as of current date, and investment of x will get you y systems emulated well" and just break down the sweet spots along with what they run well. Along with that, somewhat establish the hierarchy of difficulty to run for the 3D emulated platforms. I'm beginning to lose track of which emulators need the most horsepower, especially when it comes to N64, PS2, Dreamcast, and Gamecube/Wii. Even establishing "if you want to run this emulator for 90% of games, expect to spend around x" would be helpful for knowing what to expect.
Its weird how the PSPGO that I gave some work over 10 years ago still performs better than these more expensive devices.
Performs better for what systems ?
I really want a system where the screen rotates 90 degrees for DS and TATE mode. There are so many great SHMUPS, pinball, and Android games that need a tall screen to work right.
As always, thanks for the sincere Review :)
would love to see an update on the x55 w jelos losing support and rocknix taking over
Thanks for the video!!
Can this play Gran Turismo?
came for the info, and the video immediately opens with megaman legends music
This is why I get so nervous when wanting to buy one of these products. I just watched retro gaming Corps video on this system and he got a lot of those games to work just fine without doing anything I believe but in this video they run like crap. These systems seem so hit and miss.
A TATE-device, maybe where the screen can be loosened and flipped (like with the Switch flip-grip), would be pretty awesome.
I been waiing for a long vertical screen device for long for DS emulation, I think the perfect moment for it would be when Citra 3DS emulation is at least very good so you can have such device for NDS and also 3DS games, well worth it.
The Nontendo podcast made me fall in love with you! Now I come for your advice on the best handheld emulator. I trust no other opinions.
Hey, Bob! I'd be interested to see you talk about emulation on non -portable computers such as raspberry pi.
Bought this few months ago, jelos was installed from the box, at this moment have some problems with Dpad
It pretty good works with moonlight streaming, tested in a few games
For the price it could be the perfect handheld for pc streaming like you mentioned. Other handhelds either don't have all the buttons, don't have offset sticks, or are way more expensive.
Exactly, I bought it from Ali at 70⎠last week, waiting to try it out on Moonlight, and the occasional PokÃĐmon or GBA RPG.
That dog though :D
When Retro Game Corps reviewed this a month ago, he recommended turning the CPU governor to "performance". Hope that helps~
And frameskip on games Like GTA Libery/Vice Stories
@@MrBlazingninja and they are still unplayable with that, especially liberty city stories
The rg35xx new cfw, koriki, can play a couple of nds, n64, dreamcast and psp. As far as the psp goes, it can play need for speed most wanted pretty good. Majority of the 2D games are playable as long as the games do not require an analog stick or touch screen ð
You really should get the 2S and compare it to the 2+. the difference is quite impressive performance wise.
I just modded a wii it plays all the way up to wii games as well as gcn from roms (legally ripped from my own disks of course) Im working out DS emulation rn
Thereâs not a ton on this machineâĶis it as powerful as the 405 or 505? I love the look of this one and the placement of the thumb joysticks? I know Iâm saying that wrong but Iâm sure people will know what I mean. Iâm just not sure if I could get used to both being at the bottom like on the 505 or rp3
Bob what do you think about the lenovo legion Go?
Good news DS is now fully working on Miyoo Mini Plus.
The latest garlic OS plus the latest drastic is great.
Don't think PSP will ever be able to be done, but the fact that DS was able to be done is amazing.
Your hound convinced me to subscribeð
Did you overclock the system when running JELOS?
Just curious on what your thoughts would be on getting a AYN Odin 2 or steam deck, price difference I know is different
What do you think of the RGB30? It's 1:1 720x720 screen. Looks great for DS games and retro games that are not* GBA and PSP. Also looks great for TATE Mode since it's 1:1 so you lose out just a bit less horizontal space than the widescreens.
Iâm having a massive issue with my rg35xx on PokÃĐmon Emerald I finished the game beating the elite four and the champion but after the credits when I want to continue playing it says âthe save file has been erased due to corruption or damageâ and my save is unable to go any further
Great video. Can you make a video on the Microsoft surface duo 1. Your thoughts on 3ds and 2ds Roms for this system in 2023. Thank you and I look forward In hearing back
I was wanting to go for the Odin pro, and I saw the Samsung Galaxy s10e for 120 on Amazon so I gave it a try, and this phone performs good I bought the dsp-d3 controller for 10 on sale also on Amazon, and I ended up getting budget phone with extreme good performance that runs GameCube, wii and ps2 better than the rg505 and the rp3+ at higher resolutions for 155 dÃģlars I still canât compare it with the Odin since Iâve never tried the Odin but I consider it extremely good for 155 dolars, I ended up playing the games I wanted on this phone and also on tv since it has mhl, so if youâre on a budget this is a good emulation hand heald that is very good, the bad thing is that the phone has a small battery itâs like a 3000m battery but it still gives you 2-3 hours of gameplay on emulation, on some android games it last less I got an hour and a half on Genshin impact
Loving the Zim sightingâĪ
Whats the best plug and play and handheld that already comes with games? I have no PC and wouldn't even know how to set up if i did
How donât he have 1mill yet I been watching him for awhile he always have high quality videos
Is there one of these that can run Dreamcast in 720p/60 and do it well? I want to play Crazy Taxi at work during lunches and bringing my Dreamcast / Component Cables / HDMI Adapter / Monitor / Controller etc is quite a lot. Thatâs not including setup and powering everything. I havenât done it yet but have considered it and now Iâm looking at one of these emulation devices. Iâm not concerned with other consoles just Dreamcast emulation.
The size and form factor are in my happy place at least. These days I'm in a pre 64 bit mood so maybe that makes it worth it?
I like the looks of the KTR1. PS2 support and also Wii I believe. A little bit extra but I love how they have the choice of a joy pad on top or a joy stick. I think it's Android. IDK.
