Jeff Carlisi the guitarist and songwriter from 38 special performs Hold On Loosely for a guitar clinic in Texas. He still plays great and is a really down to earth guy too!
Jeff Carlisi is an underrated monster guitarist!!! His phrasing is what drew me in as a young teenage guitarist when .38 Special was on the radio everyday.....the good old days!!!! Such a great melodic player!!! Plays what fits the song perfectly!!!!😁😎👍🎸🎶🎵
This is one of the tastiest and melodic solos of all time. Just so memorable with how it follows the melody yet sings. Jeff should have more name recognition but real music fans know him.
The band hasn't been the same without Jeff Carlisi in it on lead guitar. I had a chance to see the original line-up of 38 Special in concert back in the 1980s, and have never regretted attending - what a fantastic show! I still listen to the band all the time and whenever their stuff comes on, I turn it up - way up!
i don't know if he got fired or if he just got disgusted. .38 needs something these days, IMHO .38 has gone middle of the road and just plays casinos . they do not even have guitar am,ps any more. they all bring their PODs and plug into the PA. they need to go back to real amps and call this guy up and make amends
Listening to that song allows me to time travel, I close my eyes and suddenly I'm surrounded by the people who loved me, back to the time when I wasn't alone.
One of the most singing guitar solos in rock history. I've come here 4 decades after this song came because I was determined to once and for all find out who the guitarist was who play it. I didn't know his name until today. It is a thing of magic and right up there with any great guitar genius you could name. And the recording engineer so many decades ago captured it with an amazing reverb sound that still electrifies the senses.
1970s classic rock. So glad I was a teen when the best music was written!!! And especially attending all the concerts. And the cost never more than about $15 or so!!!!
He started Camp Jam in Atlanta (Atlanta was the first location) 4 years ago and I've gotten to be good friends with him over the years. He is a great guitarist and a great person!
From the moment I heard this song 40 years ago, I've felt this was about the most melodic and well-phrased lead I've ever heard in mainstream rock music. One of those melodic leads you actually sing along with in your head.
He is one of those players that knew how to do his own thing. He found a way to sound good with a lot of character in his playing and well timed and structured licks.
the guitaring in this song may not be defined in todays world as "amazing" but its still extremely creative and jus sounds soo catchy ane soo much emotion is put into it
What a player! This guy stands at the forefront of the soundtrack of my Life. That's for sure. Eddie is my #1 guy - and he changed my Life. But Jeff is on my Top-5 list for absolute sure. Love his work. Love that band. Love what Jeff and Don did together, as guitarists. Just amazing.
Omg goodness! I have been fascinated by this man for years, all I knew was he guitar in .38 special . God, I feel like I have woken up from a " coma". So.. Jeff Carlisi I ❤ you and that guitar, I never ever got to see you and the band in person, but I have followed the band through this many years. IT WOULD be a thrill for this woman to meet ya°!! Love at first site for me, I'd love to have a photo... but just finally knowing your name is such A JOY FOR ME. Music got me through a lot of rough patches all my life. God bless. ... A devoted fan name SHELLY😚😚
Love Carlisi’s playing. Beautiful phrasing, tasty vibrato, and feel for days. He really knows how to decorate a song. He never tries to over play, although I’m sure he could if he wanted to.
Oh my God I believe I've listened to it just now probably 15 times cuz I couldn't get enough. One of the greatest guitarists in the world right there. say what you want but I'm sitting here actually crying while listening to this. Jeffs playing has always affected me like that. You're the best Jeff
This brings back a ton of memories for me because I listened to a lot of .38 special way back in the 80's and even saw them in concert once in albany, georgia when their "strength in numbers" album came out back then.
Who knows what ever happened with his departure from 38 special and why, but he still is a great guitarist and in any band large or small there are a lot of differences in vision and personalities and it happens all the time.
While I'm always amazed at what shredders can do, in my mind, melody will always win. And Carlisi had melody coming out of his pores and is a prime reason I still listen to 38 Special. In fact, most of the Southern Rock guitar bands had terrific melody-focused guitar players. A pure pleasure to my ears. Actually, most of Classic Rock had great melody players: Eagles, Blue Oyster Cult, BTO, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Pink Floyd, the list goes on and on. These guys usually weren't shredders (although many of them could), but rather focused on pleasing the ear with imaginative melody.
Hell yeah!! That guy truly rocks! I saw JC at an outdoor concert at Hart Plaza in the Downtown Hodown in Detroit..1986! He stood just inches over a gate playing his Gibby Explorer and just kept a walin', great player! Great feelin for the axe!
Jeff never played a Gibson Explorer. His main stage guitar that you are referring to was a custom guitar made for him in the seventies by a Georgia luthier name Jay Riness of Rhyne Guitars fame. It was copied from Allen Collins' Explorer.
I love this solo and ALL the 38 solos they got that special sound like skynyrd the sound of those hit songs are incredible the guitar work and vocals and everything just is perfect ! great video kool! why aint he still jamming in 38? Did he play slide guitar on four walls of raiford by lynyrd skynyrd too?
Gibby Explorer, he plays a Rhyne custom Explorer. Made just for him...I thought it was a Gibson until I saw an interview with him talking about his guitar. I have been to many shows and always thought it was a Gibson too.
NO ONE on youtube had that extra lick during the chorus (the one that mimics the singer starting at .33 in C#) and was able to duplicate it by watching this video. Thanks Jeff and OldRockFan!!
Thanks for thi info; I'll have to check it out. I've been playing drums since age 6, so around 11 years now, and I'd love to play with some of these rock legends!

Jeff plays in F# penta minor or C# minor natural (even thing)! you look those fingers where they lay the hands. After you check up with your guitar!! Any guitarist (who knows play) could play this kind of solo.He is very respectful of the original solo I find. Good job
@lhbox83: Hang in there; Jeff's playing is subtle and has a lot more going on than you might think. The recordings of .38 Special are layered, and have multiple guitar tracks, too, so make sure you are doing the work of one guy and not 3 or 4! That's tough for anyone...
@@daveg4236 - I've known that fact since the 1980s, and seeing them live. Not to mention the fact that I am a guitar player myself and can hear how many parts there are. I'm not as young as I used to be, but not so old that I need a restatement of the obvious.
I’d rather listen to this than any shredder.

His phrasing is amazing. You can't teach that. Some guys have it and most guys don't.
TouchéPadre yeah you can
You’re right
But it’s more about how much people like to ride the highway for the road. Not the car or the lights
Absolutely! Jeff Carlisi and Buck Dharma are favs!

I was just getting chills when I read your post!
Their guitar work is a lot more complex than most people give them credit for. It’s damn near genius 🔥

Probably one of my favorite all time solos. It flows so well, and really fits the song well. Love it.
best Solo Fantasy Girl.... :)
Almost 30 years since that song came out and I still get goosebumps. He is the MASTER!
A very underrated player, you can have all the chops in the world but it won't help you phrase a solo like this
Why did he leave .38 Special ?
He started Camp Jam in Atlanta (Atlanta was the first location) 4 years ago and I've gotten to be good friends with him over the years. He is a great guitarist and a great person!
Thanks Jeff for the joy you given to the fans.
He's still got it after all these decades!
I played with Jeff and Brian Howe in Gadsden Al. several years ago. Jeff is a hoot and a hell of a nice guy.
Always loved the guitar work in this tune! Very emotive and happy sounding!

this guitar solo is right up there with the comfortably numb/freebird/etc solos.
Great classic solo 🎸🎵🎵
I'm obsessed with this solo, It's really tough to learn. Their are a lot of different techneques going on.
He performed at my camp in phoenix today :) hes amazing.
JC... What a Great Guitarist 💥 🎸💥
He's one of the reasons I started playing. He's a magnificent musician
Jeff Carlisi is probably the most under rated guitarist in history.
Great, underrated guitarist. Always was one of my favorites.

He was at Ben Orr's bedside with Ben's family when Ben passed away. They had been great friends and in the band "Big People" together
I saw them three times in that band
💥 That Was Great Jeff 🎸 Your a Very Humble Guy💥
Started off not to into it but then he thought this does rock an got right into it . This is one of the best rock songs that around .
Wow what a gem to suddenly see in my feed. Great solo, great song and great band. Wild eyed southern boys 👍
