I always like to say FUN > FASHION > FUNCTION. Having fun and looking cool are way more important than being "good." And with the long hauls to the rarest (available) stuff in the game like the dead curses, emissary ledger rewards, and achievement-locked ship sets, you just might get good along the way.
They do but sometimes if your crewmate has a mermaid it seems to give you theirs even if it’s miles away, and then your crewmate takes their mermaid, and when you’re about to reach it after swimming for ages, it respawns that mermaid and spawns one in for you as it would normally. It hurts my brain
