Your serial device should have commands for controlling or inquiring data. Your computer is used to issue the commands and look at the data coming in. The converter(s) are just middle men that help the communication take place over the network.
You would consult the manual for connection parameters (i.e. baud rate) and commands that you would issue to inquire the data you seek or control the device if your device supports it
