One of the All Time great sporting comebacks. Started that season out of the top 16, but won both this Tournament and the next one. Winning back to back Ranking titles at the age of 46 is a spectacular achievement in any era. Yes
I met Doug about a year before this as he's from the next village. He reckoned Hendry was just about unbeatable at that time. Nit long after Doug then won 2 majors, consecutively I believe. He was such a down to earth guy. Considering he didn't turn pro till he was 34 the boy from the valleys done good!
Mountjoy was always going to win at least a few frames off Hendry, win or lose it was always going to at least into the Sunday night, and after the mid session interval too regardless of how Hendry played. This was never going to be a convincing Hendry win of the 16-2 or 16-3 variety. Mountjoy played too well in the match to lose that heavily despite so many people completely writing him off as being no threat. He made 3 straight centuries vs Hendry, he was a worthy winner. People completely forget that Mountjoy had already won it 10 years before and made the world championship final in 1981 including taking 12 frames off Davis in the final (how many did that against Davis at the Crucible at the time) and beat Reardon in the semis to make that final to face Davis, and to get to the UK final to face Hendry he won 5 best of 17 matches. Ok Mountjoy didn't make century break after century break after century break to make the final what Hendry at very first visit of multiple frames what Hendry was capable of, but he was certainly played far better than just adequate or half decent all the way to the final, and he raised his game significantly in the final vs Hendry which he had done in the past. Ok, Mountjoy was only ranked world no.24 the time he faced Hendry, but that didn't reflect his ability.
Yeah I certainly didn't expect Doug to win.hendry did have the odd loss like this one like against Alex Higgins in a final but these times were very seldom in his prime.but all credit to Doug he played very well to win this .
Yeah but nobody is unbeatable as they all have days where form drops see how many times Ronnie has lost badly like to ding the time he didn't get one frame even .
Love you Doug. Very well done. I remember watching this final on 26/27 November 1988. I was 11. When Stephen beat Steve 9_3 in his semi final, I was absolutely stunned. I thought Steve was going to win this also being the regular winner of all the big tournaments. But Doug also won the Mercantile Credit Classic in January 1989, Beating fellow Welsh man Wayne Jones in the final 13_11. Steve was the defending champion. Beating John Parrot 13_11 in the 1988 Mercantile Credit Classic final 1988.. Steve lost early round 16 in 1989.
Players meeting each other 4 times over 2 days in the UK was a classic that waa highly popular back in the day. I don't know how much demand there is for that to happen in a final nowadays outwith the Crucible though.

I wish all rounds of the UK up to tge semi were the best of 17 Everybody wants to watch both semi finals and the final live on the main BBC channels. The eveing snooker up to the quarters ought to be on BBC3 with the semis. You can't start the TV rounds on Saturday, and have both semi finals on 1 table all best of 17and still have best of 31 final. They should have started the TV rounds from 1993 onwards on the Friday to have kept thhe best of 31 final. I hated the 2 tables semis, didn't feel such a big round for such a major tournament. The UK is the real second only to the worlds in importance.
BBC went to the snooker live at the start of the final session, then put something en, then went back to the snooker but not live, then put something wlse on, then went back to the snooker (again not live). BBC were truly apalling not shwing the whole of the final live

I think at the time he was only the second player ever (after Steve Davis) to win back to back ranking tournaments.
