You are having much better growth than this time last year Andrew. It's great not to be short of feeding for your cows and buying in expensive feed.

If u can carry over ur silage do it. It will keep just fine, just have ur contractor push the new crop right up against the old crop wall. Take the plastic off the top and have him put a layer on top. U will see next to no spoilage.

Considering the amount of issues you had after planting the maize with it being pulled out and eaten and the amount of rain you've had that maize looks great
You should of seen the maize over here last summer after months of drought some of it was barely waist high very thin and very yellow and dry

My experience in a bunker would be to feed up the maize and make more silage bales. The little bit of maize your going to have left over will not be enough to worry with and it could mold after you expose it to air by spreading it out. Then you would make poor feed out of a percentage of the new maize that is over the old stuff.
I carry silage over but not the few ton you talking about. The smaller amount will result in a higher percentage per ton of spoilage. I would make some more grass silage bales. That way you have no trouble with potential spoilage.

Why feed more silage to make silage? Doesn’t make sense. I think feeding more grass is much more profitable, also if things end up bad he still has silage that he can use to slow his rotation

@@robhughes8553 I am an American we call maize/silage and grass silage/ hay ledge. I am saying that the maize/corn silage is much more likely to spoil if he keeps it over making "new/fresh" grass silage bales. The practice of spreading out the old maize in a thin layer in the bottom of the bunker, allows a lot of air/oxygen to get mixed in the old stuff. Therefore it is more likely to spoil/mold. With it being on the bottom you then have a lot of new maize silage possibly contaminated when he feeds it out.

👀🙄🐾👍 Interesting comparison Andrew we are down on day degrees/OTUs
It probably wouldn't be worth while carrying the maize over as by the time you chop it you won't have that much left how rat free is it ?

I haven’t worked with maize for years but from memory you ideally have to feed the old stuff first before digging into the new stuff and put a heavy amount of salt on the face where they meet.

Just build onto your maize stack. Grass is the cheapest way to feed cows. It shouldn't mould if you don't uncover it too early. Thanks for the video.

Absolutely no problems keeping silage over for next year
Just think of it as money in the bank, it's there for when you really need it

Hi Andrew you would be better to use up the old maze why risk it better off make more new stuff with the summer you are having and looks like could be another storm coming in the next week so wouldn't take long to close up a few paddocks and they be ready to cut . And still get good growth afterwards. But if you decide to keep it spay the face with saturated salt solution before you cover it up

First paddock had a lot of disease damage on the plant leaf vs the 2nd paddock you pulled from

To me, looks like your tilled ear was a late emerger. Remember pollination happens base of ear to tip. Looks like you ran out of pollen, where tip fill isn’t complete. Also late emerged/stressed ears may lose kernel rows.
